Chapter 10 - First Pursuit

Kai didn't notice the tail at first.

The city moved the way it always did—restless, layered with noise and urgency. Motorcycles weaved through traffic, street vendors shouted over the hum of generators, and the air carried that familiar mix of heat and dust. It should have been ordinary. Safe, even.

But something felt… off.

It started as a prickle at the back of his neck.

He slowed his pace slightly, eyes forward, resisting the urge to turn around. Ever since the warning about the corporation, he'd been trying to stay alert without looking paranoid. But alertness had its own language—the subtle tightening of muscles, the instinct to listen harder, see more.

And right now, every instinct he had was screaming.

You're being watched.

Eli's voice slipped into his thoughts, quieter than usual but sharper.

Don't turn around yet.

Kai swallowed. You feel it too?

A pattern. Footsteps matching yours. Distance maintained. Whoever it is—they're trained.

Kai adjusted his bag on his shoulder, forcing himself to keep walking. His pulse began to climb, steady but accelerating.

Agents? he thought.

A pause.

Most likely.

The word landed heavy.

Kai turned down a side street without warning, one of the narrower ones lined with aging buildings and flickering signs. He used the reflection in a dusty window to glance behind him.

A man in a dark jacket followed.

Not close. Not obvious.

But consistent.

Kai's stomach tightened.

Okay, he thought, panic threatening to creep in. Okay, this is happening.

Stay calm, Eli said. Panic makes you predictable.

Easy for you to say.

No, Eli replied. It isn't.

Kai exhaled slowly, forcing control back into his breathing.

"Think," he muttered under his breath.

He needed a plan. Fast.

The street ahead split into two—one leading toward a crowded market, the other toward a quieter residential stretch. Instinct told him to go where there were more people.

Crowds mean witnesses, Eli said. But also less room to maneuver.

Better than being cornered alone.

Kai veered into the market.

Immediately, the environment swallowed him—voices, colors, movement. Stalls packed tightly together, people brushing past him on all sides. It should have made him feel safer.

It didn't.

Because the man followed.

Kai saw him again in a reflection—closer now, weaving through the crowd with unsettling precision.

He's good, Kai thought.

He's not alone, Eli replied.

Kai's heart skipped.

What?

Three more. Different angles. They're closing in.

Kai's breath hitched.

Suddenly, the crowd didn't feel like cover—it felt like a trap.

We need to move, Kai said.

Now.

Kai pushed forward, slipping between people, ignoring the irritated looks and muttered complaints. He turned sharply down a narrow passage between stalls, then another, trying to break line of sight.

But every time he glanced back—

They were still there.

Not chasing.

Tracking.

Herding.

"They're boxing me in," Kai whispered.

Yes, Eli said. And they're being careful.

That scared him more than anything.

If they wanted him gone, they would've acted already.

No—this was controlled.

Deliberate.

They wanted him alive.

Kai burst out of the market into a wider street, sunlight hitting him hard. His eyes adjusted quickly as he scanned for an exit—anywhere he could lose them.

That's when he saw the van.

Black. Parked ahead.

Engine running.

The side door slid open.

Two figures stepped out.

No uniforms.

No hesitation.

Just intent.

Kai froze for half a second too long.

RUN, Eli snapped.

Kai moved.

He pivoted sharply and sprinted in the opposite direction, adrenaline flooding his system. The world blurred around him—sound dulled, vision narrowing.

Footsteps thundered behind him.

Not just one.

Multiple.

They're faster than you, Eli warned.

I know!

Kai's lungs burned as he pushed harder, dodging pedestrians, leaping over obstacles without thinking. His body moved on instinct—but it wasn't enough.

They were gaining.

You need me, Eli said.

Kai hesitated.

Using the sync like this—it was different. Dangerous. Every time he relied on Eli, the line between them blurred a little more.

You don't have a choice.

Another glance back—

Too close.

Kai clenched his jaw.

"Fine," he whispered.

The shift was immediate.

It started like a ripple in his mind—then a surge.

His senses sharpened.

His movements refined.

It wasn't just speed—it was precision.

Let go, Eli said softly.

Kai did.

And Eli stepped in.

Kai's stride changed instantly—longer, more efficient. He cut left at the perfect moment, slipping into a narrow alley just as one of the agents lunged for him.

Missed.

Kai vaulted over a stack of crates, barely breaking stride, then used the wall to push himself upward, catching a ledge and pulling himself onto a low rooftop.

Below, the agents adjusted without hesitation.

One followed.

Of course he did.

Kai ran across the rooftop, feet barely making a sound. The city stretched out ahead—uneven, chaotic, full of potential paths.

Jump, Eli instructed.

Kai didn't question it.

He leapt across the gap to the next building.

For a split second, he was weightless—

Then he landed cleanly, rolling to absorb the impact.

Behind him—

The agent made the jump too.

Closer now.

Relentless.

Kai's mind raced.

They're not normal, he thought.

No, Eli replied. They're enhanced.

That word sent a chill through him.

Like me?

Better trained.

Kai pushed harder, sprinting toward the edge of the roof.

This is insane, he thought.

Yes, Eli agreed. So stop thinking and trust me.

At the edge—

Kai jumped again.

This time, the gap was wider.

Too wide.

For a moment, doubt flickered—

Then Eli adjusted mid-air, twisting their body just enough—

Kai slammed into the far ledge, fingers catching the edge.

Pain shot through his arms.

He slipped—

Hold on!

Kai gritted his teeth, muscles screaming as he pulled himself up.

The agent behind him didn't slow.

Didn't hesitate.

Jumped.

Kai rolled onto the roof just as the agent landed, closer than ever.

Their eyes met.

Cold.

Focused.

Not human in the way Kai expected.

"Stop," the agent said, voice calm, controlled.

Kai didn't.

He ran.

But he knew—

He couldn't keep this up forever.

We need an exit, Kai thought.

There, Eli said.

A fire escape.

Old.

Rusting.

Perfect.

Kai sprinted toward it, grabbed the railing, and swung himself over, descending rapidly. The metal groaned under his weight, but held.

Halfway down—

A hand grabbed his ankle.

Kai's breath caught.

The agent.

Faster than he thought.

Kai reacted instinctively—kicking hard, twisting his body. The grip loosened just enough—

He dropped.

Hit the ground hard.

Rolled.

Pain flared through his shoulder, but he ignored it, scrambling to his feet and running again.

Behind him—

The agent landed silently.

Still coming.

This isn't working, Kai thought, panic rising again.

Then we change tactics, Eli said.

How?

A pause.

Then—

We stop running.

Kai's mind stuttered.

What?

Trust me.

Footsteps closing in.

No time.

Kai turned.

The agent was already moving toward him, precise, efficient, ready.

Kai steadied his breathing.

Let Eli take more control.

Not all.

But more.

The world slowed.

The agent lunged—

Kai sidestepped, faster than before, grabbing the agent's arm and redirecting the momentum. The movement felt alien—and natural at the same time.

The agent stumbled—

Just enough.

Kai struck.

Not hard.

Precise.

A hit to the neck—calculated, controlled.

The agent dropped.

Not unconscious.

But slowed.

Kai didn't wait.

He ran.

This time, no hesitation.

No looking back.

Just movement.

Turn after turn, street after street, until the sounds of pursuit finally faded.

Only then did he stop.

Breathing hard.

Heart racing.

Alive.

For now.

Silence settled around him, broken only by the distant hum of the city.

Kai leaned against a wall, sliding down slowly.

His hands trembled.

"That was…" he started.

Just the beginning, Eli finished.

Kai closed his eyes.

"They found me."

Yes.

"They're not going to stop."

No.

Kai swallowed, the weight of it sinking in.

"What do they want from me?"

Eli was quiet for a moment.

Then—

Everything.

Kai opened his eyes, staring into nothing.

The chase wasn't over.

It had only just begun.
