The creature moved.
Not with sound.
Not with weight.
But with certainty.
It stepped forward as if the world itself made space for it, its form flickering at the edges, never fully solid, never fully gone, something caught between presence and absence.
He couldn't move.
His body refused him.
The sand beneath him felt heavier now, not physically, but as if something unseen pressed down on him, holding him in place, forcing him to feel every second of what was about to happen.
"…No…"
The word barely formed.
The creature raised its arm.
There was no blade.
No claws.
And yet— Everything in him screamed that the next moment would end him.
His chest tightened.
That pressure again.
Not outside.
Inside.
That same presence.
That same weight.
"…Move…"
His fingers twitched.
Nothing.
"…MOVE—"
Something snapped.
Not in the world—In him.
His hand slammed into the sand beside him, fingers digging deep as he forced his body to react, not through strength, not through control, but through sheer refusal to stay still.
He rolled.
The creature's arm came down—
And the air where he had been seemed to collapse inward for a split second, the sand compressing unnaturally as if crushed by something invisible.
He didn't stop.
He pushed himself forward, dragging his body across the sand, ignoring the pain, ignoring the weakness, forcing distance between them in the only way he could.
The creature turned.
No delay.
No confusion.
It followed.
Always the same distance.
Always closing.
"…It won't stop…"
His breath came in short, uneven bursts as he forced himself up again, barely managing to stand, his legs trembling violently beneath him as he staggered forward.
Run.
The thought was simple.
Clear.
Run.
He moved.
Not fast.
Not clean.
But enough.
The sand shifted beneath him as he pushed forward, each step threatening to send him collapsing again, his body already at its limit, his strength fading with every second.
Behind him— Silence.
But it was still there.
He knew it.
He didn't need to look.
He could feel it.
Closer.
Always closer.
His breathing broke.
"…I can't… outrun it…"
The realization hit hard.
His legs slowed.
His vision blurred again.
The world tilted.
Then— The ground changed.
His foot struck something solid.
Not sand.
Stone.
He stumbled forward, barely catching himself as he fell onto rough, uneven ground, his hands scraping against a surface that did not shift beneath him.
Stone.
Broken.
Cold.
He turned.
The creature stopped.
At the edge.
Where the sand met the stone.
Its form flickered violently.
Unstable.
Like something resisting.
For the first time— It hesitated.
"…What…"
His voice was weak.
Confused.
The creature took a step forward— Then stopped again.
Its body distorted further, its outline breaking apart before reforming, as if the space it tried to enter rejected it.
It didn't come closer.
It couldn't.
Silence stretched between them.
Then—
Slowly— It retreated.
Its form dissolving into the darkness as if it had never been there at all.
Gone.
He didn't move.
Couldn't.
His body gave out completely, collapsing against the stone surface as his chest heaved, his breath ragged and uneven, his limbs refusing to respond any longer.
"…Safe…"
The word didn't feel right.
But it was the only one he had.
His eyes drifted upward.
The sky is darker now.
The faint glow is still there— Hidden.
Blocked.
"…This place…"
His voice faded.
"…even the night…"
His eyes slowly closed.
"…wants me dead…"
Silence returned.
But this time— He was still alive.
And for now— That was enough.
