Chapter 19 - Chapter 19. The Last Twenty-Five

The road stayed silent.

Another day of gray asphalt and gray sky. No crates. No monsters. No survivors.

Just the RV and the endless highway.

Alex sat in the passenger seat, watching the horizon. His back still throbbed. His arm still ached. But he was alive.

Twenty-five credits.

That's all he needed.

Twenty-five credits to Level 7. Three levels after that to the first Legendary Perk.

"I can't believe we haven't seen a single crate," Sarah said. She'd been driving for hours, jaw set, eyes forward.

"The system is still holding back," Maya said from the back. "The trap isn't sprung yet."

"Then when does it spring?"

"When we stop running."

Alex didn't like the sound of that.

---

James checked his bandages at noon.

The medic worked in silence, efficient and gentle. His hands knew what they were doing.

"You're healing faster than expected," James said.

"Good genes."

"Good stubbornness." James sat back. "Your mother was the same way. Wounds that should have taken weeks healed in days. She said it was because she refused to die."

"She had someone to live for."

"She had you." James packed up his kit. "And now you have her. Don't forget that."

Alex looked at the journal. Still tucked into his jacket. Still unread past Day 60.

"I won't," he said.

---

Danny found the crate.

The kid had been walking ahead with Maya, stretching his legs. He crested a small hill and stopped.

"Alex!" he shouted. "I see something!"

Alex climbed out of the RV. Walked to the hill.

Below, in a small depression off the shoulder of the road, a white glow.

A crate.

White. Common. Worth fifty credits.

Fifty credits was more than twenty-five.

"Check for survivors," Alex said.

Jade scanned with her rangefinder. "None. Just the crate."

"Any monsters?"

"None."

Alex looked at Maya. The archer shrugged. "Feels too easy."

"Maybe. But we need the credits."

He walked down the hill.

---

The crate sat alone.

White. Glowing. Innocent.

Alex crouched beside it. Touched the lock.

Eight seconds.

One... two... three...

His system pinged.

```
[System: Warning – Unusual crate activity detected.]
```

Four... five... six...

"Alex, something's wrong," Sarah called from the hill.

Seven... eight...

The lock clicked.

The crate opened.

```
[System: Common Supply Crate (White) opened.]
Rewards:
– MRE x1
– Water Bottle x1
– Credit: 50
– Warning: Crate was rigged with a tracker.
```

A tracker.

Alex's blood ran cold.

"Someone's been watching," he said. "Someone knew we'd come."

"Who?" Sarah asked.

"The same people who left the letter. The same people who sent the assassins." He stood up. "The same people who want me dead."

"Vera?"

"Maybe. Or someone worse."

---

The attack came an hour later.

Not monsters. Not Road Knights.

A single vehicle. Black. Armored. No windows.

It crested the hill behind them and stopped.

Alex grabbed his tire iron. "Everyone inside."

"What about you?" Sarah asked.

"I'll handle this."

"Alex—"

"Go."

The RV's engine started. The crew climbed in. Jade took the roof. Maya took the side door.

Alex walked toward the black vehicle.

The door opened.

A man stepped out.

Tall. Bald. A scar across his throat—old, healed. He wore a black jacket with no insignia. No patches. No colors.

"You're Alex Chen," he said.

"I am."

"Your mother sent me."

Alex froze. "What?"

"Elena. She's alive. She's waiting. But you're running out of time." The man reached into his jacket.

Alex raised his tire iron.

The man pulled out a photograph.

Alex's mother. Elena. Standing in front of a door. A door that glowed.

"Zero Mile," the man said. "She's on the other side. But she can't get out. Not without you."

"Why should I trust you?"

"Because I'm her husband. Your father."

---

The world stopped.

Alex stared at the man. The scarred throat. The familiar jaw. The face from the photograph—the third face, the one he hadn't recognized.

"You're dead," Alex said. "Cole said you died on the road to Zero Mile."

"Cole lied." The man—Marcus—stepped closer. "I didn't die. I was captured. Held. Tortured. They wanted information about Elena. About Zero Mile. About you."

"Who?"

"The ones who built the system. The ones who control the road." Marcus's eyes were dark. "They've been watching you since the Transfer. Testing you. Seeing if you're worthy."

"Worthy of what?"

"Worthy of following her."

Alex's hands were shaking. "Why now? Why not reveal yourself days ago?"

"Because I wasn't sure you'd survive." Marcus looked at the RV. At the crew. "But you have. You've fought. You've bled. You've built something. That's what she wanted."

"What did she want?"

"Someone who could break the system. Someone who could save us all."

---

Sarah appeared at Alex's side. Her wrench was raised.

"Alex, who is this?"

"My father."

Sarah's eyes went wide. "Your father is dead."

"That's what I thought too."

Marcus looked at Sarah. "You're the mechanic. The one who keeps the RV running."

"I'm the one who keeps him running."

"I know. Elena mentioned you in her messages."

"What messages?"

"Messages I've been carrying for months. Waiting for the right time to deliver." Marcus reached into his jacket again. Pulled out a folded piece of paper.

Alex took it.

His mother's handwriting.

Alex—

If you're reading this, you've met your father. I know you have questions. I know you're angry. But please—listen to him. He's the only one who can help you find Zero Mile.

I'm waiting.

—Mom

Alex read it twice.

"She's alive," he said.

"She's alive," Marcus confirmed.

"And you've been carrying this message for months."

"Years. Since before the Transfer."

"Why didn't you give it to me sooner?"

"Because I didn't know where you'd be. The system hides things. People. Messages. I've been searching for you since the Transfer began."

Alex looked at the road. The gray road. The endless road.

"My mother is alive," he said. "And she's waiting at Zero Mile."

"Yes."

"Then that's where we're going."

---

Marcus joined the crew.

Cole wasn't happy. The old trucker had been lying—or at least hiding the truth. Marcus hadn't died on the road to Zero Mile. He'd been captured.

"Why didn't you tell me?" Alex asked.

"Because I didn't know if you could handle it," Cole said. "Your father... he's not the same man he was. They broke him. Tortured him. He's got secrets in his head that could get us all killed."

"He's my father."

"Doesn't matter. Trust is earned, not inherited."

Alex looked at Marcus. The man was standing by the black vehicle, talking to Maya. The archer seemed to know him.

"She was there," Cole said. "At the end. When Marcus was taken. She saw it happen."

"Maya saw?"

"She was part of Elena's crew. She knows what Marcus went through."

"Then why didn't she tell me?"

"Because she's afraid of what he's become."

---

Alex pulled Maya aside.

"You knew my father was alive?"

"Yes."

"And you didn't tell me?"

"I couldn't." Maya's voice was quiet. "The people who took him... they're still out there. If they knew I was helping you—"

"They'd kill you."

"They'd kill everyone."

Alex looked at the RV. At Sarah. Jade. Danny. Riley. James. Cole.

His crew. His family.

"Tell me everything," he said.

Maya took a deep breath.

"Your father was the first to reach Zero Mile. Before Elena. Before anyone. He found the door. He opened it."

"And?"

"And something came through. Something that changed him." Maya's eyes were dark. "He's not the same man, Alex. He's... different."

"Different how?"

"Watch him. You'll see."
