The air outside the door felt heavier than the room itself.

Aran stood face to face with the cloaked figure. The street behind him was narrow and dimly lit, the walls of Ravak rising on both sides like silent observers. The noise of the city faded in that moment, as if even Ravak was holding its breath.

The figure didn't move.

Neither did Aran.

Then—

The man slowly lowered his hood.

Aran's eyes narrowed.

He had expected a soldier. A fanatic. A stranger.

But not this.

The man was older than he remembered from the mountain encounter, yet the same cold authority remained in his face. Sharp eyes. Controlled expression. A presence that did not belong to ordinary men.

"You're difficult to find," the man said calmly.

Aran didn't answer.

Behind him, he could feel Lena and Kalen watching from inside the room, ready but hidden.

The man noticed Aran's silence and gave a faint, almost disappointed smile.

"I thought the mountain would break you," he said. "Instead… it chose you."

Aran's hand tightened slightly.

"The mountain didn't choose anything," he replied. "It was already broken."

The man's eyes flickered—just for a moment.

Interest.

"Careful," he said softly. "You speak like someone who understands it."

"I understand enough," Aran said.

A pause.

The wind passed between them, carrying dust through the alley.

Then the man took a step forward.

Aran didn't move.

"I'm not here to kill you," the man said.

Aran let out a short breath.

"That's new."

A faint smirk appeared on the man's face.

"If I wanted you dead," he said, "you wouldn't have left the mountain alive."

Silence again.

Aran studied him carefully now.

This wasn't just an enemy.

This was someone who had been watching longer than he thought.

"Who are you?" Aran asked finally.

The man looked at him for a long moment.

Then answered:

"My name is Vael."

The name meant nothing… and everything at the same time.

Aran felt the amulet pulse once beneath his cloak.

Harder.

Recognizing.

Vael noticed it immediately.

"So it still responds to you," he said quietly.

Aran's eyes sharpened.

"What do you want from me?"

Vael stepped closer, lowering his voice.

"Not you," he said. "What's inside you."

The words hit heavier than any blade.

Behind Aran, Lena shifted slightly. Kalen tensed.

Aran kept his voice steady.

"There's nothing inside me."

Vael shook his head slowly.

"You've already seen the seal," he said. "You've already touched what sleeps beneath it."

Aran said nothing.

Because it was true.

Vael continued.

"And now the balance is collapsing."

A pause.

"You released something in the mountain, Aran."

Aran's chest tightened.

"I didn't release it," he said. "I stopped it."

Vael's expression darkened slightly.

"No," he replied. "You delayed it."

The silence after that felt different.

Heavier.

Final.

Vael looked past Aran for a moment, toward the room behind him.

"I know you're not alone," he said.

Lena's grip tightened on her weapon inside.

Kalen didn't move, but his eyes narrowed.

Vael turned back to Aran.

"I don't care about them," he said. "I care about time."

Aran frowned.

"Time for what?"

Vael exhaled slowly.

"For what is coming."

A distant sound echoed through the city—footsteps, far away, moving too coordinated to be random.

Aran felt it too.

So did Lena.

Vael noticed Aran's reaction and nodded slightly.

"They're already here," he said.

Aran's eyes widened slightly.

The cloaked ones.

Inside Ravak.

Vael took another step closer, now only a few meters away.

"You have two choices," he said.

Aran didn't respond.

"Come with me," Vael continued, "or let the city become another grave."

Aran's mind raced.

Trust him?

Impossible.

But ignoring him?

Also impossible.

Behind him, Lena's voice came low and sharp through the door.

"Aran… don't."

Kalen added quietly,

"He's not lying… but he's not telling everything either."

Vael smiled faintly.

"Smart friends," he said.

Aran stepped forward slightly, now standing directly in front of Vael.

"If I go with you," Aran said slowly, "how do I know I'm not walking into a trap?"

Vael met his gaze without hesitation.

"You don't," he replied.

Honesty.

Cold.

Dangerous.

A silence stretched between them.

Then Vael turned slightly, glancing toward the end of the alley.

"They've started moving," he said.

Aran felt it again.

The amulet pulsed faster.

Not warning now.

Urgency.

Vael looked back at him.

"Decide quickly, Aran."

The city had already begun to shift around them.

And whatever choice he made now…

Would change everything.
