Ren read her body language perfectly. He reached out, gently placing his hand on her waist and pulling her in close. Mai let out a soft, shaky breath. She was nervous—this was her first kiss, and she didn't know exactly what to expect—but she wanted this more than anything.
Ren leaned down and pressed his lips against hers. He started slow and gentle, just a soft, sweet touch to let her get used to the feeling.
Mai's hands slowly moved up, her fingers nervously grabbing the front of his shirt. She kissed him back, a little clumsy for a second, but she quickly relaxed into his warm hold.
When Ren felt her relax, he decided to take the lead. He slid his other hand up to cup the back of her neck, gently tilting her head back to get a better angle. Then, he deepened the kiss, pressing harder against her lips.
Mai gasped softly in surprise at the sudden intensity. That small gasp was all the opening Ren needed. His tongue slipped past her lips, easily exploring her mouth.
A hot wave of heat rushed all the way through Mai's body. Her eyes squeezed shut, and she let out a quiet, needy moan, her hands gripping his shirt tight enough to wrinkle the fabric. She followed his lead, her tongue meeting his in a messy, passionate rhythm.
It was intense and entirely overwhelming. Ren didn't hold back at all, making the kiss deep and demanding. They fought for control, their tongues sliding and tangling together as the kiss grew hotter by the second. The feeling was so good that Mai felt like her knees were going to completely give out, but Ren held her firmly by the waist, keeping her perfectly grounded against him.
By the time they finally broke apart to catch their breath, the sun had fully set. Mai's chest heaved as she panted softly, her lips swollen and her face flushed a beautiful, bright red. she kept her arms wrapped tightly around him, burying her face into his chest with a tired, genuinely happy smile.
Mai stayed buried against his chest for a long moment, just listening to his heartbeat. When she finally spoke, her voice was quiet and a little breathless.
"This is so weird," Mai whispered, her fingers still holding tightly onto his shirt. She didn't pull away; if anything, she pressed herself closer to him. "I don't know why I feel so attached to you. We barely know each other like this, but it's like... I just can't help it. My mind keeps getting pulled right back to you."
Ren rubbed her back gently, looking out at the glowing city lights of Shibuya. He was happy, but a part of him wondered the exact same thing. Was his System's charm trait really that strong? It felt way too deep and sudden to just be a passive skill.
System, Ren asked silently in his mind, what's going on here?
A familiar blue holographic panel instantly glowed in the darkness of his mind.
[NOTICE] The User's Charm trait is only a minor factor. The primary cause is the Jujutsu Twin Soul mechanic.
[EXPLANATION] In the Jujutsu world, identical twins are considered a single entity sharing one soul. Because you have reached "Maximum Intimacy" and established a profound bond with Maki Zen'in, that connection is permanently etched into her half of their shared soul.
Since Mai Zen'in holds the other half, she experiences an undeniable "echo." Whenever Maki feels intense emotions for you—such as love, passion, or deep attachment—Mai feels those exact same emotions bleeding over into her own heart. She feels attached to you because her soul already recognizes you, and she is experiencing Maki's intense feelings as her own.
Ren's eyes widened slightly in the dark as he read the glowing text.
It all made perfect sense now. It wasn't some cheap mind-control trick or a fake system cheat. Mai was falling for him because her soul was literally tied to Maki's, and Maki loved him completely. They really were two halves of the same person. The closer he got to Maki, the more Mai was going to feel it.
Ren smiled, feeling a deep, genuine warmth spread through his chest. He stopped thinking about the System and just focused on the girl in his arms.
He wrapped both arms around Mai, holding her safe and secure against him under the night sky.
"You don't have to figure it all out right now," Ren said softly, pulling her just a little bit closer. "Don't overthink it. I'm just glad you're here."
Mai let out a long, happy sigh, the very last bit of her tension melting away in his arms. She tilted her head up just enough to look at him, her eyes shining with genuine affection.
"Yeah," she murmured, rising up on her tiptoes to press one more soft, lingering kiss against his lips. "Me too."
They walked slowly back down the hill, leaving the quiet park behind as they blended back into the bright, noisy streets of Shibuya. Mai didn't let go of his hand the entire way.
Her hotel wasn't far from the station. When they finally reached her room, the long day and the alcohol crash seemed to hit her all at once. The second the door clicked shut behind them, Mai let out a long, exhausted sigh.
She didn't even bother changing out of her nice skirt and turtleneck. She just walked straight over to the large hotel bed and flopped face-first onto the mattress, completely drained but still wearing a soft, lingering smile.
Ren chuckled quietly. He walked over, gently pulling her knee-high boots off and tossing them to the side before pulling the thick white blanket up over her shoulders. She mumbled something sleepy and happy, burying her face into the pillows. Within minutes, her breathing slowed down, and she was fast asleep.
Ren made sure she was comfortable, then walked over to the small sofa near the window. He sat down, leaning his head back against the cushion, and closed his eyes.
...
The next morning, bright sunlight peeked through a gap in the curtains, hitting Mai directly in the face.
