Chapter 25 - THE MORNING AFTER

Aura woke slowly, the faint glow of morning sun filtering through the tall curtains of her room.

For a while, everything felt quiet and distant, like her mind was floating between sleep and clarity, dreams and reality.

Then memory returned all at once. The bar. The warmth of the private lounge. The way she had spoken more than she should have. And finally, Ethan.

The silence between them. The look in his eyes. The words she had asked while she was half-drunk, half-brave, and completely vulnerable.

Her chest tightened, and she stared at the ceiling, unmoving, letting the weight settle properly this time. It felt heavier now that she was sober.

'I asked him… didn't I.'

She turned slightly, pulling the blanket closer, her expression calm despite the storm inside her.

'I shouldn't have asked.'

She remembered the sobering soup, the warmth in her hands, and how she had cut him off before he could even answer. She had said she understood. But she found it hard to. She had decided for him, from his hesitation. It looked nothing more than guilt to her.

The memory replayed slowly, painfully, each second clearer than before.

'I said I understood… but what did I understand?'

Her fingers tightened against the fabric.

'I just didn't want to hear him admit...'

She exhaled slowly, forcing herself upright.

There was no dramatic breakdown. No crying.

Just quiet acceptance.

She moved through her morning routine calmly, washing, dressing, preparing as though nothing had changed. But something had. The air around her felt thinner. Colder.

'I should step back.' she thought, the thought settled firmly this time.

'I saw enough.'

The classroom felt the same, yet different. Conversations flowed, chairs shifted, books opened. Aura took her seat between Francis and Ethan, the same arrangement as before.

The irony didn't escape her thoughts.

Francis leaned back casually, already lighter than the previous day, while Ethan sat composed, though quieter than usual.

Aura placed her bag gently on the desk, her expression calm.

"Morning," Francis said, glancing at her.

"Morning," she replied softly.

Ethan's gaze shifted toward her. "Good morning."

"Good morning, your Highness."

That was all. Polite. Distant. Clean.

It hurt more than anger.

Francis stretched slightly, running a hand through his hair. "I wasn't that drunk last night… right?"

"You leaned on me," Aura said quietly.

"I lean on good people," he replied with a faint grin.

She gave a small smile. Ethan saw it. The familiarity. The comfort. Something tightened in his chest.

'She's comfortable with him.'

He looked away, fingers tightening slightly.

'Is that her answer?'

Behind them, Avery watched. She noticed the closeness, the quiet smiles, the ease. Her heart sank again. She misunderstood, just like before.

To her, it seemed like Francis had chosen Aura.

The thought stung, but she stayed silent, her expression unreadable.

The door opened.

Stephanie walked in. More like sashayed in elegantly.

"Ethan." She called casually, walking straight toward him. Without hesitation, she took the seat beside him, leaning slightly closer than necessary.

Her hand brushed his sleeve as she spoke softly. He didn't move away. Aura saw everything. Her expression didn't change. She simply turned toward Francis.

"What class do we have next?" she asked calmly.

"Economics," Francis replied.

She nodded, continuing the conversation as if nothing had happened. Inside, something cracked quietly.

Ethan noticed the shift.

She didn't even look at him. Not once.

Vincent, seated near the back, observed everything. The tension was invisible to others, but not to him. He leaned back slightly, eyes narrowing.

Once, he had been Ethan's closest friend. That memory lingered like a scar. Now he watched from a distance, studying every subtle reaction.

Aura's distance. Ethan's restraint. Stephanie's closeness. Francis's comfort.

'This is getting messy.'

His lips curved faintly.

'If all four of them get tangled… it becomes harder to control the narrative.'

He began planning.

After classes, Aura walked quietly toward the library. She had borrowed a book earlier in the week, and returning it gave her an excuse to be alone. The space was calm, filled with soft footsteps and turning pages. She handed the book to the librarian and turned to leave. Then bumped into someone...

"Ethan." Her steps paused.

Before she could react, he stepped forward, gently but firmly taking her wrist. He pulled her deeper between the tall shelves where fewer people passed. The air felt close, quiet.

"We need to talk." He said breathing heavily.

"There's nothing to talk about." She replied closed off.

"You saw something and decided everything?"

She remained silent.

"So now what… you're back with Francis?"

That broke something inside her.

'So that's what he thinks…' she thought

Her fingers tightened slightly.

'How could not understand me right now…'

He continued, voice low. "You didn't even ask me—"

"I saw enough." She interrupted him sharply.

The words landed sharp and final.

She pulled her hand away and walked past him. Her steps were steady, controlled. She didn't look back. Ethan stood frozen, watching her go. He ran a hand through his hair, exhaling slowly.

'This hurts…'

His chest tightened.

'More than when I broke up with Stephanie for her betrayal.'

He leaned slightly against the shelf.

'Even though we barely had anything…'

He closed his eyes briefly.

'Why does it hurt this much?'

Outside the library, Aura kept walking. Her expression remained calm, composed. But as she turned the corner, a few tears slipped quietly from her eyes. She wiped them quickly, but another followed. She didn't stop walking.

'I saw enough…'

The tears fell silently as she disappeared down the hallway.
