Chapter 14: Bonds of Survival

Dawn came quietly.

After the chaos of the night, the world seemed almost… fragile.

A faint golden light began to spread across the horizon, pushing away the darkness little by little. The sky, once painted with violent clashes of wind and fire, now softened into shades of pale orange and fading violet.

The last traces of the aurora shimmered faintly above the clearing—

Then disappeared.

As if the night itself had decided to forget what had happened.

---

Silence followed.

Not the tense silence of fear—

But the heavy stillness of aftermath.

---

The clearing was unrecognizable.

What was once a battlefield of competing beasts had turned into a graveyard.

Bodies lay scattered everywhere.

Some torn apart.

Some burned beyond recognition.

Others lay still, their lifeless eyes staring blankly at the sky.

The ground was soaked.

Dark patches of blood had dried into the soil, creating a thick, metallic scent that filled the air.

Broken trees surrounded the clearing, many sliced cleanly in half, others charred black from intense heat.

Even the wind felt hesitant to pass through.

---

High above, hidden within the branches of the Star Tree—

Kael slowly opened his eyes.

---

For a few seconds, he didn't move.

His mind replayed everything from the night before.

The roar.

The pressure.

The battle.

The Wyvern.

---

His fingers tightened slightly.

"…a monster…" he whispered.

Even now, thinking about it made his chest feel heavy.

That level of power—

It wasn't something he could even imagine reaching.

Not yet.

---

He took a deep breath.

Then another.

Slowly calming his racing thoughts.

---

"Focus…"

His voice was low, but steadier now.

"That's not something I can deal with right now…"

---

His gaze shifted downward.

Toward the clearing.

---

And his expression changed.

---

"…this…"

---

Opportunity.

---

The battlefield was filled with corpses.

And not just weak creatures.

Many of them were strong.

Far stronger than the mutated rats he had hunted before.

Even those still alive—

Were barely clinging to life.

---

Kael's eyes narrowed slightly.

"This is… a chance…"

---

Carefully, he began climbing down the Star Tree.

---

Each movement was slow and controlled.

He made sure not to make unnecessary noise.

Even though most creatures were dead or injured—

He wasn't careless.

After what he had witnessed last night, he understood one thing clearly—

Overconfidence meant death.

---

When his feet finally touched the ground—

He paused.

---

The smell hit him immediately.

Blood.

Burnt flesh.

Decay.

---

Kael forced himself not to react.

Instead—

He focused.

---

His grip tightened around his spear.

---

Step.

---

He moved forward.

---

The first creature he approached was a large, boar-like beast.

Its body was covered in thick, rough hide.

Deep cuts ran across its torso.

It was still breathing—

Barely.

---

Its eyes shifted slightly as Kael approached.

Weak.

Fading.

---

For a moment—

Kael hesitated.

---

Then—

He thrust his spear forward.

---

A clean strike.

---

The beast twitched once.

Then went still.

---

Kael exhaled slowly.

---

And immediately—

He felt it.

---

A warm surge of energy flowed into his body.

---

Stronger than before.

Much stronger.

---

His eyes widened slightly.

"This… is…"

---

More.

Far more than what he gained from rats.

---

"Ten times… maybe more…"

---

The realization hit him instantly.

---

These creatures—

Were on a completely different level.

---

And so—

Without wasting time—

Kael moved to the next one.

---

And the next.

---

And the next.

---

The clearing became his hunting ground.

---

Some creatures were already dead.

He ignored those.

---

He targeted only the ones still alive.

Still breathing.

Still holding onto that final thread of life.

---

Each kill was quick.

Efficient.

---

At first—

There was hesitation.

A slight discomfort.

---

But slowly—

It faded.

---

Replaced by focus.

By purpose.

---

Kael's movements became smoother.

More precise.

---

He didn't think about morality.

Didn't think about right or wrong.

---

Only survival.

Only growth.

---

With each kill—

More energy flowed into him.

---

He could feel it accumulating.

Building.

Strengthening him from within.

---

His breathing became steadier.

His body felt lighter.

Stronger.

---

"This… is how I grow…"

---

Time passed.

---

The sun rose higher.

---

And eventually—

The clearing fell completely silent.

---

No more movement.

No more struggling breaths.

---

Only death.

---

Kael stood still for a moment.

---

Sweat covered his body.

His hands were stained.

---

But his eyes—

Were calm.

---

He had changed.

Even if just a little.

---

Then—

His gaze shifted.

---

Toward the center of the clearing.

---

Where two figures lay.

---

The Frost Wolf.

And the Fire Fox.

---

Both were still alive.

---

But barely.

---

Their bodies were in terrible condition.

Deep wounds covered them.

Fur was torn.

Burned.

Blood soaked the ground beneath them.

---

The Frost Wolf's breathing was shallow.

Slow.

---

The Fire Fox's body twitched occasionally.

Its flames—

Gone.

---

Yet—

They lived.

---

Kael approached slowly.

---

His grip on the spear tightened.

---

"They're dangerous…"

He whispered.

---

Even now—

Even in this state—

They were not ordinary beasts.

---

If they recovered—

Even slightly—

They could kill him easily.

---

He stopped a few steps away.

---

Both creatures showed faint signs of movement.

---

Their eyes—

Half-open.

Unfocused.

---

They were waking up.

---

But they couldn't move.

---

Couldn't fight.

---

Kael raised his spear.

---

"This is the safest moment…"

---

Kill them now.

---

Gain their energy.

---

Grow stronger.

---

It was the obvious choice.

The correct choice.

---

He stepped closer.

---

Closer.

---

Until he stood right beside them.

---

The Frost Wolf lay on one side.

The Fire Fox on the other.

---

So close—

That their blood had mixed on the ground.

---

Kael lifted his spear.

---

Aimed at the wolf.

---

And then—

He saw it.

---

Something in its eyes.

---

Not anger.

Not hatred.

---

Something else.

---

…Sadness.

---

His grip tightened.

---

He looked at the fox.

---

The same.

---

Faint.

But there.

---

A quiet, fading emotion.

---

Kael froze.

---

"…why…?"

---

For a moment—

His thoughts wavered.

---

These creatures—

Had been trying to kill each other just hours ago.

---

Fighting with everything they had.

---

Yet now—

---

They looked…

---

Empty.

---

Tired.

---

Not like enemies.

---

Just…

Beings at the end of their strength.

---

Kael's spear trembled slightly.

---

"…they're going to die anyway…"

He whispered.

---

After that battle—

After exhausting everything—

Death was inevitable.

---

They weren't a threat anymore.

---

He could feel it.

---

Their bodies were failing.

---

Slowly.

---

"…then why…"

---

Why did it feel—

Wrong?

---

Kael lowered his spear slightly.

---

He looked at them again.

---

At their wounds.

At their condition.

---

"…they fought to survive…"

---

Just like him.

---

That thought lingered.

---

For longer than it should have.

---

Then—

Without fully understanding why—

Kael made a decision.

---

He crouched down.

---

And placed his hand on the Frost Wolf.

---

Then—

On the Fire Fox.

---

"…if you're going to die anyway…"

---

"…at least…"

---

He closed his eyes.

---

And focused.

---

The energy he had gathered—

The life energy—

---

He pushed it outward.

---

Slowly.

Carefully.

---

Into their bodies.

---

For a moment—

Nothing happened.

---

Then—

A faint reaction.

---

Their breathing steadied slightly.

---

But—

Only slightly.

---

Their wounds remained.

Their bodies still broken.

---

"…it's not enough…"

Kael muttered.

---

No matter how much energy he transferred—

It didn't work.

---

Their condition was too severe.

---

Too far gone.

---

Kael's expression darkened.

---

"…so this is pointless…"

---

He was about to pull his hands back—

---

When suddenly—

---

He felt it.

---

A strange sensation.

---

Something deep inside him.

---

A pull.

---

A whisper.

---

Not a voice—

But a feeling.

---

Urging him.

---

Guiding him.

---

"…what… is this…?"

---

Kael's body stiffened.

---

The feeling grew stronger.

---

His heart began to beat faster.

---

His mind—

Blurred.

---

Then—

Without warning—

---

His body moved.

---

On its own.

---

His hands pressed firmly against both beasts.

---

His eyes widened.

---

"Wait—!"

---

But it was too late.

---

A word surfaced in his mind.

---

Clear.

Instinctive.

The moment the word formed—

Link.

---

Kael's body froze.

Then—

Everything rushed in.

---

It wasn't just pain this time.

---

It was… emotion.

---

A sudden, overwhelming flood surged into his mind, crashing against his thoughts like a violent storm.

---

"Ah—!"

---

Kael staggered, his grip tightening on both beasts as his vision blurred.

---

Cold.

Burning.

---

Two completely different sensations intertwined within him.

---

The Frost Wolf.

The Fire Fox.

---

Their existence—

Their feelings—

Were now flowing directly into him.

---

At first—

It was chaos.

---

Pain.

Fear.

Exhaustion.

---

Fragments of instinct.

Broken thoughts.

Fading strength.

---

Kael's breathing turned ragged.

"…I can feel them…"

---

Not clearly.

Not fully.

---

But enough.

---

Enough to understand.

---

They were dying.

---

That much was obvious.

---

Their bodies were broken beyond recovery.

Their strength depleted.

Their life force—

Fading.

---

But as Kael's mind wandered deeper into the connection—

Something changed.

---

The emotions sharpened.

---

They became clearer.

---

More focused.

---

And then—

---

He felt it.

---

A deep…

Crushing…

Sadness.

---

Kael's brows furrowed.

"…sadness…?"

---

It didn't match the situation.

---

Creatures on the verge of death—

Should feel fear.

Desperation.

Instinct to survive.

---

But this—

---

This was different.

---

It was heavy.

Lingering.

---

Almost… resigned.

---

Kael focused harder.

---

Letting the connection pull him deeper.

---

Images—

Or rather, feelings—

Began to form.

---

Not memories.

Not exactly.

---

But impressions.

---

Warmth.

Protection.

Something fragile.

---

Then—

---

Realization.

---

Kael's eyes widened.

---

"…no…"

---

His breath caught.

---

"…they…"

---

The emotions became clearer.

---

The Frost Wolf—

---

A protective instinct.

A lingering awareness of something within her.

---

The Fire Fox—

---

The same.

---

Faint.

But undeniable.

---

Kael's grip trembled.

---

"…they were…"

---

About to give birth.

---

For the first time.

---

The truth hit him like a blow.

---

That sadness—

---

It wasn't about death.

---

It was about loss.

---

Not their own.

---

But something they would never see.

---

Something they would never protect.

---

Their offspring.

---

Their children.

---

Kael's heart clenched painfully.

---

"…they knew…"

---

They knew they were going to die.

---

And that knowledge—

---

Carried only one regret.

---

They wouldn't be able to give birth.

---

Wouldn't be able to protect what came after them.

---

That instinct—

That deep, primal maternal love—

---

Was what filled them with such overwhelming sadness.

---

Kael's breathing grew heavier.

---

For a moment—

He couldn't think.

---

Couldn't move.

---

Only feel.

---

Their sorrow.

Their helplessness.

Their fading hope.

---

"…damn it…"

---

His voice cracked slightly.

---

This wasn't supposed to matter.

---

They were beasts.

---

Enemies.

---

Targets.

---

Resources.

---

That's what they were supposed to be.

---

But now—

---

He couldn't see them that way anymore.

---

Not after this.

---

Not after feeling this.

---

His grip tightened.

---

"…you're not… just beasts…"

---

The connection pulsed.

---

Their emotions responded.

---

Faintly.

Weakly.

---

But there.

---

A fragile awareness.

---

Kael closed his eyes tightly.

---

"…so that's it…?"

---

He whispered.

---

"You fought… not just to survive…"

---

"…but to protect something… that hasn't even been born yet…"

---

Silence.

---

But the answer—

Was clear.

---

Kael's chest felt heavy.

---

For the first time since arriving in this world—

---

He hesitated not out of fear—

---

But out of emotion.

---

"…this world…"

---

"…is cruel…"

---

The words slipped out quietly.

---

Because it was.

---

Power decided everything.

---

Strength ruled.

---

And the weak—

---

Lost everything.

---

Even before it began.

---

Kael slowly opened his eyes.

---

And looked at them.

---

Really looked.

---

Not as prey.

---

Not as threats.

---

But as—

---

Mothers.

---

About to lose everything.

---

Before it even started.

---

His jaw tightened.

---

"…no…"

---

The word came out firm.

---

Stronger than before.

---

"I'm not letting that happen."

---

The moment he said it—

---

The connection flared.

---

As if responding to his resolve.

---

The energy within him surged.

---

Not forced.

Not scattered.

---

But focused.

---

Controlled.

---

Kael leaned forward.

---

His hands pressed more firmly against them.

---

"Listen to me…"

---

His voice was low.

But steady.

---

"I don't know how…"

---

"But I won't let you die like this."

---

The energy began to move again.

---

But this time—

---

It wasn't just flowing.

---

It was responding.

---

To his will.

---

To their emotions.

---

The Link deepened.

---

The flow of life energy changed.

---

Instead of simple transfer—

---

It began to merge.

---

Kael's breath hitched.

---

"This… is different…"

---

The wolf's body reacted first.

---

Frost energy gathered more steadily around her wounds.

---

Not just stabilizing—

---

Preserving.

---

Protecting something deeper within.

---

The fox—

---

Its embers reignited.

---

Not violently—

---

But steadily.

---

Like a flame being carefully guarded.

---

Kael's eyes widened.

---

"…their bodies…"

---

"They're protecting…"

---

The unborn.

---

That instinct—

That will—

---

It wasn't fading.

---

It was fighting.

---

Kael gritted his teeth.

---

"Then fight harder…!"

---

The energy surged.

---

Faster.

Stronger.

---

His body weakened in response.

---

But he didn't stop.

---

Didn't hesitate.

---

"Take it…!"

---

His voice rose.

---

"Take everything you need…!"

---

The Link pulsed violently.

---

For a moment—

---

Everything went silent.

---

Then—

---

The Frost Wolf's breathing deepened.

---

The Fire Fox's body steadied.

---

Their life force—

Still weak—

---

But no longer fading as fast.

---

Kael exhaled shakily.

---

"…it's working…"

---

Barely.

---

But enough.

---

For now.

---

He didn't know what would happen next.

---

Didn't know if they would survive.

---

Didn't know if the unborn would live.

---

But one thing was certain.

---

They weren't alone anymore.

---

And neither was he.

---

The connection pulsed softly.

---

Three lives.

---

Bound together.

---

By something deeper than survival.

---

Something fragile.

---

Something real.

---

Kael lowered his head slightly.

---

"…we'll survive…"

---

His voice was quiet.

---

But unwavering.

---

"Together."
