Chapter 2: First Steps of Survival

Kael took another step forward.

Then another.

The shattered forest stretched endlessly before him, dark and silent—waiting.

There was no hesitation now.

Only movement.

Only purpose.

The edge of the floating island disappeared behind him as he walked deeper into the unknown. The ground beneath his feet felt uneven, fractured by deep cracks that ran like scars through the land.

Some of them pulsed faintly.

Not bright.

Not obvious.

But enough to notice.

Kael avoided them instinctively.

"…Don't step somewhere you don't understand."

His voice was low.

Controlled.

The silence around him remained absolute.

No birds.

No insects.

No movement.

Even the wind came and went in strange bursts—short, unnatural pulses that disturbed the dust before vanishing again.

"…Feels like the world is holding its breath…"

He tightened his grip slightly.

"Or waiting."

For what—

He didn't know.

But he didn't slow down.

Survival came first.

Everything else could wait.

---

Time blurred as Kael moved cautiously through the broken forest.

The deeper he went, the denser the trees became.

Their trunks grew thicker.

Darker.

Some looked almost charred, as if burned—but without ash, without heat, without any sign of actual fire.

Just… wrong.

The air grew heavier too.

Each breath felt thicker.

Richer.

But not in a comforting way.

"…This place is changing…"

Or maybe—

It already had.

---

Then—

The trees thinned.

Light broke through.

Kael stepped forward—

And stopped.

A clearing opened before him.

At its center—

A lake.

Still.

Perfectly still.

The surface reflected the fractured sky above like polished glass, shimmering faintly with broken light.

Kael didn't move immediately.

His eyes scanned everything.

Edges of the clearing.

Tree lines.

Ground.

Water.

Nothing moved.

Nothing reacted.

"…Too quiet…"

Slowly, carefully, he stepped forward.

The ground here was smoother.

Less broken.

Almost… untouched.

His gaze lowered toward the lake.

The water was—

Clear.

Too clear.

He could see straight to the bottom.

Smooth stones rested beneath the surface.

No mud.

No algae.

No debris.

Just clarity.

"…That's not natural…"

Then—

Movement.

His eyes sharpened.

Fish.

Dozens of them.

They glided beneath the surface in slow, controlled patterns. Their bodies reflected faint fragments of light, shimmering in subtle, unnatural hues.

"…Food…"

Relief flickered across his face.

Brief.

But real.

Still—

He didn't relax.

Not here.

Not now.

He crouched slowly and extended his hand.

His fingers touched the water.

Cold.

Clean.

But the moment his skin made contact—

Something stirred.

Not in the lake.

Inside him.

A faint sensation.

Like something had noticed.

Kael pulled his hand back immediately.

"…Yeah. No."

His eyes narrowed.

"…Nothing here is normal."

But that didn't change the fact—

He needed this.

Water.

Food.

Space.

Then—

His gaze shifted.

Toward the edge of the clearing.

A tree.

Massive.

Towering above everything around it.

Its trunk was thick—layered with dark bark that seemed almost alive, faint vein-like patterns running across its surface. Its roots spread wide, some emerging from the ground like coiled limbs.

Its branches stretched outward, forming a wide canopy that cast deep shadows beneath it.

Kael stared at it for a moment.

"…That's not just a normal tree…"

Something about it—

Felt different.

Not threatening.

But not passive either.

Present.

Aware.

He focused.

"Appraisal."

Kael's pupils shrank slightly.

"…E+ Rank…"

Stronger than anything he had seen so far.

Level 7.

Far beyond him.

But—

It wasn't attacking.

Dormant.

He exhaled slowly.

"…So not everything is hostile…"

His gaze shifted between the tree and the lake.

Food.

Water.

Shelter.

Recovery.

"…Best option I've got."

Kael nodded once.

"…This is it."

---

He moved immediately.

No wasted time.

Broken branches littered the area near the tree.

Dry enough.

Strong enough.

He gathered them quickly, stacking them in small piles.

His arms began to ache.

His breathing grew heavier.

"…Too slow…"

He stopped.

Looked at the wood.

"…Right."

Linking.

Kael picked up two branches and pressed them together.

Focused.

"Link."

A thin strand of energy extended from his hand.

Wrapped around the wood.

The branches trembled—

Then fused.

Seamlessly.

Kael's eyes sharpened.

"…That's useful."

---

[System Notification]

→ Linking Proficiency Increased

---

He worked faster now.

More efficiently.

Piece by piece.

Connection by connection.

A structure began to form.

Crude at first.

Unstable.

But improving.

Slowly—

A raised platform wrapped partially around the tree.

Not perfect.

But elevated.

Defensible.

"…Good enough for now…"

---

Next—

Weapon.

He searched the clearing again.

Found a straight branch.

Then a jagged stone.

Sharp enough.

He held them together.

"Link."

Energy wrapped.

Merged.

Formed.

A spear.

"…It'll do."

---

His gaze returned to the lake.

"…Now food."

He crouched near the edge.

Still.

Focused.

Watching.

The fish moved carefully.

Not random.

Aware.

He narrowed his eyes.

"Appraisal."

Kael exhaled slowly.

"…Fast…"

His grip tightened on the spear.

"Then I just have to be faster."

---

He lowered his stance.

Steady.

Patient.

Waiting.

Watching.

Learning.

---

Kael didn't move.

Not yet.

The spear remained steady in his hands, its crude tip hovering just above the water's surface. His breathing slowed deliberately, each inhale controlled, each exhale measured.

The fish moved below.

Smooth.

Silent.

But not careless.

They reacted to the smallest disturbance—ripples, shadows, even subtle shifts in light.

"…Too sensitive…"

Kael narrowed his eyes.

"If I rush, I fail."

So he didn't.

He waited.

Watched.

Learned.

Minutes passed.

The wind pulsed once—briefly disturbing the lake's surface—then vanished again.

The ripples faded.

The fish resumed their natural movement.

That was when Kael noticed it.

Patterns.

They weren't swimming randomly.

They followed loops.

Distances.

Intervals.

Some stayed near the surface.

Others dipped lower before returning.

"…You repeat…"

His grip tightened slightly.

"I just need one mistake."

Time stretched.

His legs began to ache from staying still, but he ignored it.

Then—

One fish slowed.

Just slightly.

Closer than the rest.

Its movement lagged behind the pattern.

Kael's eyes sharpened.

"Now."

He struck.

Fast.

Precise.

The spear pierced the water—

A sharp splash echoed across the clearing.

For a split second—

Nothing.

Then—

Resistance.

"…!"

The spear trembled in his hands as something struggled at the tip.

Kael pulled back quickly.

Water scattered.

A fish writhed violently, impaled through its body.

"…Got you."

He exhaled sharply, tension leaving his shoulders.

The fish struggled weakly before going still.

For a moment, Kael just stared at it.

Then—

A faint notification appeared.

---

[System Notification]

→ +1.0 EXP Gained

---

His eyes flickered.

---

[System Notification]

Level: 1

EXP: 2.01 / 10

---

"…Alright…"

A small sense of relief settled in.

It wasn't much.

But it was progress.

Real progress.

---

He didn't stop there.

He couldn't afford to.

Kael reset his stance.

Focused again.

The fish had scattered after the strike—but slowly, cautiously, they began to return.

More alert this time.

More careful.

"…Smarter than they should be…"

That made things harder.

But not impossible.

He adjusted.

Changed angle.

Lowered his stance further.

Reduced movement.

Waited longer.

The second strike came slower.

More controlled.

He missed.

The third—

Closer.

But still missed.

Frustration built.

But he forced it down.

"Don't rush…"

His breathing steadied again.

Then—

Another opportunity.

A fish moved slightly out of formation.

Closer to the edge.

Kael moved.

Strike—

Impact.

This time—

Clean.

The spear pierced through.

The fish thrashed briefly before going still.

---

[System Notification]

→ +1.0 EXP Gained

---

[System Notification]

Level: 1

EXP: 3.01 / 10

---

"…Two."

Kael nodded faintly.

Better.

Still not enough.

But better.

---

After several more attempts—

He stopped.

His arms were tired.

His focus slipping.

"…Enough for now…"

Overexertion would get him killed faster than hunger.

He stepped back from the lake, carrying the fish with him.

---

Back at the tree, the air felt… different.

Subtly warmer.

Calmer.

Kael paused.

"…The tree…"

He glanced at it again.

The massive trunk stood silent, unmoving—but now that he focused—

He could feel it.

Faint.

But there.

A presence.

Not aggressive.

Not aware in the same way animals were.

But alive.

Deeply alive.

"…That aura…"

He didn't fully understand it.

But his body relaxed slightly near it.

His breathing eased.

"…Recovery effect…"

Just like the appraisal said.

---

He placed the fish down on a flat stone.

"…Now the hard part…"

Food preparation.

No tools.

No fire ready.

No experience.

"…Great."

He exhaled slowly.

"Think."

Knife substitute.

Sharp stone.

Cutting motion.

It wasn't clean.

It wasn't efficient.

But it worked.

Barely.

The smell hit him first.

Raw.

Strong.

Unpleasant.

"…I really hope this doesn't kill me…"

He paused.

Then focused again.

"Appraisal."

---

[Appraisal Activated]

[Item Information]

Name: Raw Clearwater Fish

Type: Consumable (Raw Meat)

Rank: F

---

[Effect]

→ Restores minor stamina

---

[Warning]

→ Risk of contamination

→ May cause negative effects if consumed raw

---

Kael stared at it.

"…Yeah… figured."

Cooking would be safer.

But fire—

He glanced around.

Dry wood was available.

Good.

But ignition—

That was the problem.

"…No lighter…"

No matches.

Nothing.

He frowned.

"…Think…"

Then—

An idea.

Friction.

Hard.

Slow.

But possible.

"…This is going to suck…"

---

Time passed.

Too much time.

Effort.

Trial.

Failure.

Again.

And again.

His hands grew rough.

His patience thinner.

But eventually—

A spark.

Tiny.

Weak.

But real.

Kael froze.

"…Don't mess this up…"

Carefully—

Slowly—

He fed it.

Dry leaves.

Thin twigs.

Breath controlled.

The spark grew.

Flickered.

Then—

Caught.

A small flame rose.

Unstable.

But alive.

Kael leaned back slightly, letting out a long breath.

"…Yes…"

---

The fire burned weakly.

But it was enough.

He placed the fish over it carefully.

The smell changed.

Less sharp.

More tolerable.

Still not good.

But edible.

"…Good enough."

---

He ate slowly.

Cautiously.

Every bite measured.

Every reaction monitored.

Nothing happened.

No immediate pain.

No reaction.

Kael exhaled.

"…Safe enough…"

---

After eating, he leaned back against the tree.

For the first time since waking—

He rested.

Not fully.

Not comfortably.

But enough to think.

---

"…Linking…"

His eyes shifted to the tree.

"…Living things…"

Slowly—

He placed his hand against the bark again.

Closed his eyes.

"Link."

For a moment—

Nothing.

Then—

Contact.

Stronger this time.

Deeper.

A vast, steady presence filled his awareness.

Not thoughts.

Not emotions.

But existence.

Roots spreading through the earth.

Energy flowing.

Life circulating.

Kael's breathing slowed.

His mind quieted.

He felt—

Connected.

Then—

A pulse.

The connection snapped.

Kael staggered back slightly.

"…Again…"

---

[System Notification]

→ Skill Acquired

---

[Skill Information]

Name: Nature Sense Lv.1

---

[Effect]

→ Detects nearby lifeforms and natural energy

---

Kael blinked.

"I… can feel it now…"

He focused.

The clearing—

Wasn't empty.

Faint presences flickered at the edge of his awareness.

Small.

Weak.

Hidden.

"…There's more here than I can see…"

---

Night came slowly.

But unnaturally.

Darkness didn't fall.

It spread.

Like ink seeping into water.

The forest dimmed.

Shadows stretched.

Moved.

Shifted—

Even when nothing else did.

Kael sat on his platform.

Spear in hand.

Fire flickering weakly.

"…This is worse than silence…"

Then—

Light.

He looked up.

And froze.

The sky—

Was alive.

Waves of color stretched across the darkness.

Flowing.

Shifting.

Pulsing.

An aurora.

But unnatural.

Too vivid.

Too deep.

Too… aware.

"…What is that…"

The light reflected across the lake.

Turning it into a mirror of moving color.

Beautiful.

But wrong.

Deeply wrong.

---

Then—

His body tensed.

Something moved.

At the edge of his senses.

Faint.

Distant.

But there.

Kael's grip tightened on the spear.

"…I'm not alone…"

The presence didn't approach.

Didn't attack.

But it was watching.

Waiting.

---

[System Reminder]

Adaptation Period Active

Time Remaining: 6 Days 18 Hours 42 Minutes

Kael's eyes hardened.

"…Six days…"

Fear remained.

But it no longer controlled him.

"I'll survive."

No matter what watched him.

No matter what this world had become.

He would live.
