Chapter 10 - First Quest

Silas leaned back slightly, staring at the holographic status screen. A part of him found it… strangely natural. Systems, stats, levels—he'd read about such things in stories before, yet somehow, it didn't shock him that one was hovering in front of his face now. It was almost as if a part of him had always been waiting for this, some hidden thread tugging at him, nudging him toward something he didn't fully understand.

"I mean, of course, a system exists. Why wouldn't it?" he muttered under his breath, a faint smirk tugging at the corners of his mouth. "It's just… me. Of course I'd get something like this."

Before he could sink further into his thoughts, a sharp ping broke the moment. The screen flickered, and a new panel emerged, formatted like a checklist:

DAILY QUESTS

- Reach Class in under 5 minutes.

- Humiliate Damien.

- Locate and apologize to the girl from the previous encounter.

A small text box blinked beneath it:

"Daily quests provide experience, system familiarity, and situational training. Completion recommended. Rewards scale with efficiency and creativity."

Silas groaned, rubbing his temple. "Of course… daily quests. Why does this system have to make me do school stuff?"

The system pinged again, almost impatiently:

"Quests are non-negotiable. Success will increase level and unlock basic functions. Failure will limit experience gain. User discretion advised for strategy implementation."

Silas leaned forward, eyes narrowing. The first quest… reaching class in under five minutes was easy enough. The second one… humiliating Damien—well, that would take some thinking, especially since he still wasn't fully used to the system. And the third… apologizing to the girl he'd clashed with… a bit awkward, but manageable.

He muttered, half to himself, half to the system: "Fine… fine, I'll play along. But don't think I'm gonna enjoy all of this."

"Acknowledged. Quest timer activated. Efficiency tracking: ON."

The screen blinked once more, and the daily quests interface floated in his vision like a guiding panel, ready to measure every choice, every action, every minor success. Silas swallowed. For better or worse, his day had just become… a system-managed battlefield.

And the first target, Damien, was already waiting somewhere outside, unaware that he was about to be thrust into the crosshairs of something far beyond normal school rivalry.

...

Silas bolted out of the dormitory, backpack strapped tight across his chest, pink hair bouncing with every step. The translucent holographic interface of Cupid's System hovered in front of him, glowing faintly, outlining corridors, staircases, and shortcuts in sharp, pulsating lines.

Quest #1: reach class in under five minutes. The timer blinked in bold pink numbers at the top corner: 4:59.

The school was already alive with the morning rush. Students swarmed the hallways, some rushing, some lingering, oblivious to the speedster weaving through them. The system highlighted the most efficient path, projecting bright pink lines on the floor that pulsed toward the classroom door. Silas's steps were deliberate but fluid, each movement calculated, each leap and pivot precise.

And then the interference came.

A group of younger students had spilled a tray of breakfast in the cafeteria corridor, a slick puddle of juice and oatmeal stretching across the floor. Without warning, the normally simple hallway became a treacherous obstacle course. The holographic system flared a warning, mapping the hazard in glowing red, showing potential slip trajectories and velocity impacts if he didn't adjust.

Silas's eyes narrowed. The timer blinked: 4:37. No room for mistakes. He adjusted his stride, calculating the risk. His sneakers hit the floor in precise sequences, pivoting just enough to avoid the slick spots. One misstep, and the speed he had built would be wasted entirely.

He launched himself over a small stack of chairs abandoned near the spill, twisting mid-air to avoid hitting the low-hanging banner. The system projected a transparent overlay of his body trajectory, showing the landing angle he needed to clear the mess without losing momentum. He followed it instinctively, almost as if the interface was an extension of his own mind.

Just as he landed, a janitor pushing a mop cart rounded the corner. The cart wobbled dangerously, threatening to spill a bucket of water. Silas barely had time to shift his weight, leaning sideways and tucking his backpack closer to avoid both collision and splatter. The system highlighted a split-second optimal path around the cart in glowing pink arrows. He followed it with precision, skimming past the edge of the hallway as the mop tipped slightly but stayed upright.

The crowd of gawking students parted automatically, sensing the speed and control in his movements. Whispers floated after him: "Pinky…""He's insane…""Watch him fly past!"

Silas's legs burned, sweat clinging to his pink hair, but his eyes stayed on the pulsing lines projected by the system. Every stairwell, every corner, every minor obstacle was already mapped in bright, efficient routes. He leapt over a low bench, slid under a hanging display, and used a railing to vault down a short flight of stairs, turning his body mid-spin to land without losing a beat.

A stack of delivery boxes near the classroom entrance threatened to block his path entirely. They teetered dangerously as someone brushed past, and a slight jolt could send them tumbling. Silas calculated the push required, using the momentum from his slide to nudge the corner box just enough to clear the path without toppling the others. The system displayed a glowing tick mark beside the action: Obstacle avoided.

Finally, with a surge of speed, he crossed the last hallway, the classroom door looming ahead. The timer blinked: 4:52. He slammed the door open, sliding just inside with a sharp breath, pink hair sticking to his sweat-dampened forehead.

The system's interface floated silently beside him, updating automatically:

Quest #1 Complete

Time: 4 minutes 52 seconds

EXP gained: 5

Efficiency rating: 92%

Obstacles overcome: 4

Silas leaned against the doorframe, chest heaving, still flushed with adrenaline. No one dared comment as he settled into his seat, the whispers of "Pinky" following him silently. The system displayed the remaining quests, glowing in soft pink beside him:

- Humiliate Damien.

- Locate and apologize to the girl from the previous encounter.

He traced the glowing icons with his finger, already planning, already analyzing. Even with the first quest complete, the day ahead promised more challenges—and more chances to test this strange, powerful system that seemed to measure every decision, every step, every heartbeat.

For now, though, he allowed himself a brief moment to catch his breath, feeling a small, satisfied thrill. The system didn't speak; it didn't need to. It simply observed, recorded, and guided—and for the first time, Silas felt like he was finally stepping into something far bigger than himself.
