Chapter 4 - Chapter 4 - Chains in the Forest

Forest Escape

The cold air hit Laz's face as he and the masked man emerged from the underground tunnels.

Behind them, the ruined city faded into the mist. Ahead, the forest stretched wide and quiet.

Laz's wrists were bound in thick chains, the metal clinking with each step. His head hung low.

"So," Laz muttered, his voice rough, "are you gonna keep me in chains, or are you gonna release me already, brother?"

The masked man stopped. Slowly, he turned around and smiled beneath the mask. With a low chuckle, he lifted it off, revealing the familiar face beneath.

"Hey now," his brother said, tugging lightly on the chain, "isn't this fun, little brother?"

He yanked hard, almost making Laz trip. But Laz caught himself and pulled back, forcing his brother to stumble in return. His brother burst into laughter.

"Hahahahaha!"

Laz frowned. "What's so funny?"

"Nothing, little brother," his brother said, wiping away a tear. "I just miss you, that's all."

He unlocked the chains, one link at a time, until they fell loose onto the forest floor. Laz rubbed his wrists.

"Why did it take you guys so long to come for me?" Laz asked, his tone sharp. "You know how many years went by in that hellhole? It took everything in me not to blow my cover."

His brother's smile faded. The joy in his eyes shifted to something heavier.

"I'm sorry, Laz. When Dad sent you on that mission, we had no idea what was gonna happen next. The day you left, something big went down. The family split apart."

He paused, lowering his voice.

"For years, I haven't seen any of our brothers or sisters. And now, I need your help, because I can't do this alone."

"What do you mean?" Laz asked. "We're the most secretive family out there. No one could've infiltrated our town. We're the smartest and strongest clan alive. So what could've happened?"

His brother looked away. "Mother's missing, Laz. No one knows where she is. Dad's gone insane. When everyone found out, it turned into chaos. Cane was banished after an argument, and Lilith, she wouldn't let him be alone. She left with him."

He sighed deeply.

"Your older sister from the magic academy has been skipping classes to search for Mom. She's lost in her research. And me, I've been trying to find Lilith. I don't trust Cane with her."

He stepped closer to Laz, his eyes firm.

"That's where you come in. You're her twin. You're the only one who really understands her. Cane might be our older brother, but he's heartless. He'll use her for his own gain. Everyone loves you the most, Laz. They'll listen to you more than me. So tell me, what should we do?"

Family Resolve

Laz dropped to the ground, lying on his back and staring up at the sky. For a moment, he said nothing.

Then, he stood, stretched his arms and shoulders, and cracked his neck.

His brother tossed him a necklace, their family's insignia. Laz caught it, slipped it around his neck, and pulled on his shirt, hiding the tattoo on his back.

He bounced lightly from side to side, his body growing tense.

Then, with fire in his eyes, he turned toward the dark tunnel they'd come from and pointed.

His brother sighed. "Laz, I'd gladly let you go rampage on that doc. But if you attack now, you'll break the treaty with the king. That means war. Save your anger for another day."

Laz lowered his hand, exhaled slowly, then turned back to face him.

"Let's go get our sister," he said. "She'll find Cane, and wherever Cane is, Lilith will be."

The two brothers started walking through the forest, the morning light cutting through the trees as the scene faded to black.
