Chapter 20 - The Part That Was Already Gone

Lin Mo kept walking.

There was no pause between steps.

No hesitation.

No reason to slow.

Each movement followed the last—

clean—

even—

unbroken.

The hallway stretched ahead.

Familiar.

Unchanged.

Or close enough.

His breathing remained steady.

In—

out—

quiet.

Nothing interrupted.

Nothing slipped.

For a few seconds—

it held.

Then—

he was at the next turn.

No transition.

No approach.

Just—

there.

He didn't remember reaching it.

Not clearly.

There was no gap.

No break.

No missing moment.

And yet—

the distance behind him

felt reduced.

Not gone.

Just—

less than it should have been.

His step continued.

Turned.

Clean.

The motion completed.

But for a fraction—

it felt like the turn had already finished

before he entered it.

His brow tightened faintly.

That—

didn't hold.

The corridor changed direction.

Or had already.

He moved forward.

Step.

Clean.

Another.

The same.

Nothing wrong.

Nothing out of place.

A door stood to his left.

Closed.

Plain.

He passed it.

Then—

it stayed.

Not following.

Not moving.

Just—

remaining beside him

as he walked.

One second—

two—

still there.

Then—

it was behind him.

Too far behind.

As if the distance had corrected—

without anything between.

Lin Mo's fingers shifted slightly.

Then stilled.

He didn't turn.

Because he wasn't sure

when it had left.

Above—

Shen Kairen stood still.

The signal remained present.

Faint.

Unstable.

Not fixed.

Not sequential.

He didn't test it.

Didn't apply input.

Observation alone—

no longer held consistency.

The fluctuation appeared—

then—

before it ended—

it appeared again.

Not repeated.

Not overlapping.

Just—

present

in two points

with nothing connecting them.

His gaze lowered slightly.

"…displaced."

Quiet.

Measured.

He didn't follow either instance.

There was no order between them.

Below—

Lin Mo walked.

The hallway remained steady.

Unchanged.

Or close enough.

His steps continued.

Even.

Clean.

No delay.

No correction.

Then—

he was further ahead.

Again.

No shift.

No motion.

Just—

further.

His breathing didn't change.

His body didn't react.

Only—

the sense that something had been skipped.

Not removed.

Just—

never fully there.

His chest tightened slightly.

Then released.

The timing aligned.

Too clean.

He kept moving.

Because stopping—

wouldn't return anything.

A sound—

ahead.

A step.

Or something like it.

He didn't focus.

Didn't listen.

And yet—

he already knew

where it would be.

The sound followed.

Exact.

Placed.

Matching something

that hadn't occurred yet.

Lin Mo's brow tightened faintly.

That—

didn't connect.

Above—

Shen shifted his gaze.

Not toward location.

Toward sequence.

The signal flickered.

Then—

without fading—

it was no longer the same.

No transition.

No change.

Just—

disconnected

from what it had been.

His fingers stilled.

"…fractured."

Soft.

Precise.

A pause—

slightly longer than before.

"…between states."

He didn't move.

Continuity—

no longer held long enough

to be measured.

Below—

Lin Mo slowed.

Not fully.

Just enough.

His step landed.

Clean.

The next followed.

The same.

Nothing wrong.

Nothing out of place.

And yet—

something didn't align.

He lifted his hand slightly—

then lowered it.

For a moment—

it felt finished

before it happened.

The motion remained—

but not its order.

His fingers tightened.

Then loosened.

"…no."

Barely a whisper.

Not denial.

Not understanding.

Just—

rejection.

He passed a section of wall.

Plain.

Unmarked.

Then—

he passed it again.

Not similar.

Not close.

The same.

His step didn't change.

Didn't slow.

But something in his balance adjusted—

as if accounting

for something he hadn't experienced.

A figure appeared ahead.

Walking.

Steady.

Normal.

Lin Mo didn't focus.

Didn't observe.

And yet—

he had already passed them.

The figure remained ahead.

Then—

behind.

No crossing.

No contact.

No interval.

Just—

repositioned.

His shoulders tightened slightly.

Then eased.

He didn't turn.

There was nothing to confirm.

Above—

Shen remained still.

The signal appeared.

Faint.

Unstable.

Then—

it didn't disappear.

But it wasn't the same instance.

No transition.

No continuity.

Just—

different.

His gaze lowered.

"…non-persistent."

Quiet.

Measured.

The words lingered—

longer than before.

He didn't extend them.

There was no structure left

to extend into.

Below—

Lin Mo stopped.

The hallway settled.

Still.

Quiet.

Unchanged.

Or close enough.

He stood there.

Breathing steady.

Nothing wrong.

Nothing misaligned.

And yet—

something was missing.

Not from the space.

Not from his body.

From between.

He looked ahead.

Then—

he was already further forward.

Not moved.

Not stepped.

Just—

placed.

His fingers curled slightly.

Then loosened.

"…something—"

The word didn't hold.

Didn't remain.

Didn't connect

to anything that had fully happened.

He moved again.

Step.

Clean.

No delay.

No correction.

Everything aligned.

Too easily.

He walked.

Steady.

Even.

The hallway stretched ahead.

Unchanged.

Or close enough.

But now—

it wasn't continuous.

Not broken.

Not shifting.

Just—

missing between points.

His breath came in—

and was already gone.

His chest tightened—

then released.

The timing corrected.

Or replaced.

He couldn't tell.

The hallway remained quiet.

Still.

Unchanged.

Or close enough.

And somewhere in that stillness—

something had already happened

without ever existing—

and something else

had already ended

before it began.

A pause—

that didn't connect

to what followed.
