The room felt colder than before.
Not because of the machines.
Not because of the place.
Because something had changed.
Adam stood in front of the system, typing fast, his eyes locked on the screen.
"I'm almost done," he said, his voice low but steady.
"Just a few more seconds."
Amina didn't answer.
She was still standing near the wall, her gaze fixed on the man she had pinned moments ago. He didn't look worried.
If anything… he looked satisfied.
"You really think this changes anything?" he said quietly.
Amina didn't move.
"It changes enough," she replied.
Adam exhaled slowly behind her.
"Okay… I need you to see something."
There was something in his voice.
Not panic.
Not fear.
Something heavier.
Amina turned her head slightly.
"What is it?"
He didn't explain.
He just stepped aside and turned the screen toward her.
She walked closer.
Not fast.
Not slow either.
Just… careful.
At first, it looked like any other file.
Codes. Names. Dates.
Then her eyes stopped.
Operation: Memory Reset
Subject: Amina
Status: Completed
Her breathing slowed.
Too slow.
She kept reading.
Like maybe… if she looked long enough, it would change.
Supervisor: Adam
"No…"
The word slipped out before she could stop it.
Behind her, Adam didn't move.
Didn't try to interrupt.
Didn't even try to explain.
That silence said everything.
Amina took a step back.
Then another.
Her chest felt tight.
Like she couldn't get enough air.
"You knew…" she said, barely above a whisper.
Adam closed his eyes for a second.
Then opened them again.
"Yes."
She let out a short, broken laugh.
Not because it was funny.
Because she didn't know what else to do.
"You knew from the beginning?" she asked, looking at him now.
"Yes."
Every answer was simple.
Clear.
And it hurt more because of that.
"All this time…" she continued, her voice shaking now,
"…you were looking at me like nothing happened?"
Adam took a small step forward.
"Amina—"
"Don't."
She raised her hand slightly.
Not aggressive.
Just… enough to stop him.
"Just don't come closer right now."
He stopped.
Her eyes went back to the screen.
Then to him.
Then back again.
Like her mind was trying to connect everything at once.
"You told me they erased my memory," she said slowly.
"You told me they did this to me."
Her voice got sharper.
"And you were standing there the whole time."
"I didn't do it the way you think," Adam said.
She looked at him instantly.
"Then how?"
He hesitated.
And that hesitation…
made everything worse.
"I was there," he admitted.
"But I was trying to stop it."
"But you didn't."
Silence.
"I couldn't," he said.
Amina shook her head.
"No… you didn't."
Behind them, the man laughed quietly.
"You see it now," he said.
"He made the choice for you."
"Shut up," Adam snapped.
But it was too late.
Amina's eyes didn't leave Adam.
"You let them take my memories," she said.
"I saved your life."
"At what cost?" she asked, her voice breaking.
"Do you even know what that feels like?"
He didn't answer.
"You decided for me," she continued.
"You looked at me… and chose what I should remember and what I shouldn't."
"I chose to keep you alive," he said, more firmly now.
She shook her head again, slower this time.
"And maybe… you should've let me decide that."
That hit him.
Hard.
Silence filled the room again.
But this time… it wasn't just heavy.
It was painful.
"I trusted you," she said softly.
Not shouting.
Not angry.
Just… hurt.
Adam looked at her like he wanted to say something.
Anything.
But nothing came out.
"And you took that from me too," she added.
Amina turned away slightly.
Running her hand through her hair.
Trying to breathe.
Trying to think.
"Was any of it real?" she asked after a moment.
"Or was I just… part of the mission?"
Adam answered immediately.
"It was real."
She didn't look at him.
"I didn't pretend anything with you," he continued.
"Not then. Not now."
Amina closed her eyes for a second.
Letting that sink in.
Behind them, the system beeped.
Soft.
Final.
"Download complete."
No one moved.
Because the real damage wasn't on the system.
It was between them.
After a long moment, Amina spoke again.
"We finish this."
Her voice was calm.
Too calm.
Then she finally looked at him.
Not the same way as before.
"After that… we talk."
Adam nodded slowly.
Because he understood.
That conversation…
would decide everything.
