Soren was in Joan's office reviewing the heptagram data from the breach site when two frequencies collided at the base of his skull.
Shadow and ice.
Both hostile.
Both coming from the dormitory.
He was out of Joan's chair before she finished her sentence.
"Kane?"
"Something's wrong at the dorm."
He ran.
Joan didn't follow but she didn't tell him to stop either, and that was the same thing as permission.

The wall between his room and the corridor had a crack in it.
Not a stress fracture from settling. A split, running from the doorframe to the ceiling, wide enough to see light from inside the room through the gap.
Maren was in the hallway.
She was standing with her back against the opposite wall, both hands lit with foxfire, ears flat, tail rigid.
She looked at Soren when he came around the corner.
"I stopped it," she said. "Thirty seconds earlier and one of them would have gone through the floor."
