Chapter 24 - Wait, This Isn’t a Cooking Sim?

Mirra's eyes went wide. She dropped her staff into the dirt. "Liam? You're... a man? A very large, broad-shouldered, and strikingly handsome man? Why were you playing as a two-foot-tall girl with silver fur and big ears three days ago?"

Liam crossed his arms, the platinum plates of his gauntlets grinding together. "It was a tactical hitbox choice, Rogue. Don't make it a thing."

"A tactical, bro!" Rogue exploded into a high-pitched cackle, doubled over and slapped his knee. "We spent all of Monday questing, and you were a tiny loli wolf! You used to sit on my shoulder! And now you're... you're a Final boss! I'm having a crisis! My brain is breaking!"

"Shut up, Rogue," Liam rumbled, his voice an octave deeper than his old avatar's chirpy squeak.

Mirra stepped forward, rubbing her temples. She looked like she was dealing with a very difficult step-son. "I spent three days wondering if our little wolf-girl got eaten by a goblin, and instead, you've been out here looking like that." She glanced at the heavy platinum plates covering his chest and arms, each engraved with elaborate designs. "And where did you get all this? You look like you robbed the royal treasury."

"I've been busy," Liam said bluntly. He didn't mention the Ogre or the God of the Kitchen title; he didn't feel like explaining his life story to a kid with wolf-blood on his sneakers. He looked at their battered gear and low HP bars. "And I'm balling. Our rent is five gold, and I've got over a hundred in the bank."

"A hundred gold?!" Rogue choked. "Bro, I have four silver and a half-eaten apple!"

"Liam bought me my rapier, too," Ellie added, her pink tail giving a proud little flick. "Because I'm his partner."

Mirra raised an eyebrow, looking between the massive, silver-haired man and the pink cat girl who was clearly head-over-heels. "Partner, huh? Liam, you really have changed since Monday. You used to charge us for the salt in the stew."

"It was a business investment," Liam grunted, turning toward the southern creek. He didn't have time for the 'feelings' talk. "Alright, you're coming with us. I'm on a completionist run. I need [Truffle-Hog Snouts], and I need them now. Mirra, you keep them slowed. Rogue, you finish the stragglers. Move."

"Wait, we're being kidnapped?" Rogue asked, grinning.

"You're being recruited," Liam corrected. "Now pick up your staff, Sarah. We've got a forest to clear."

Mirra sighed, picking up her staff. "Same old Liam. Just a much bigger, scarier version. Lead the way, Big Guy."

[System: Party Update]

Elizabeth (Leader) Level 19 [Pink Cat Warrior]

Little Liam: Level 24 [Vanguard Chef]

Mirra: Level 17 [Frost Mage] (Sarah, 42)

Rogue: Level 18 [Shadow Assassin] (Min-ho, 20)

Party Vibe: Total confusion, but they aren't going to argue with the guy in platinum.

The southern sector of Tana Forest was a tangled mess of gnarled roots and bioluminescent moss, a place designed to make low-level players feel like they were being watched by something that enjoyed the taste of newbies. It was the perfect atmosphere for a "Death Game": grim, damp, and claustrophobic.

Of course, that atmosphere was currently being ruined by Rogue, who was vibrating with a mix of awe and sheer existential confusion.

"I'm just saying, bro, the math doesn't add up!" Rogue yapped, jogging backward in circles around Liam. His head was tilted so far back that he was practically staring at the sky. "On Monday, you were literally a plushie. I used to pick you up and use you as a stress ball. Now you're out here looking like a 6'6" wall of obsidian and 'get-the-hell-out-of-my-way.'

Rogue's eyes darted down to where Ellie was walking. Her new platinum pink armour was fitted, to say the least, the kind of "attractive warrior" aesthetic that most men would lose their minds over. The pleated skirt caught the wind as she moved, and her long pink hair swayed with a rhythmic, hypnotic grace.

"And don't even get me started on the upgrade to the party's visuals," Rogue added, wagging his eyebrows. "The 'Small Wolf Girl' to 'Alpha Chad' pipeline is insane, and the kitten over there went from 'Scout' to 'Main Love Interest' real quick. Those genetics are doing overtime, Liam."

Liam didn't break his stride, his heavy basalt boots crushing fallen branches with the weight of a falling star. "Looks like yours stayed in the bargain bin, Min-ho. Same height, same annoying mouth."

"Hey!" Ellie and Mirra shouted in perfect, high-pitched unison.

Ellie's pink tail puffed out like a bottle brush, her golden eyes flashing. "That is so rude! Liam, stop being a jerk just because you're suddenly the tallest person in the game!"

"Yeah, Liam," Mirra added, leaning on her staff. Her real-world form, a sharp-featured 40-year-old with a 'tired of your crap' expression, gave her an air of authority that didn't quite match her frost mage robes. "I might be a step-mother, but I can still turn your internal organs into ice cubes if you keep up the height jokes. Some of us didn't get the 'Super Soldier' growth spurt."

"I wasn't joking," Liam grunted, his red eyes scanning the brush. "It's an observation. Now shut up. We have aggro."

From the shadows of the bushes, three [Tana Shadow-Foxes] lunged. These weren't the clumsy squirrels from earlier; they were Level 12 slick, black-furred predators capable of a 'Blink' strike.

"Rogue, left. Mirra, freeze the ground. Ellie, don't let them flank," Liam commanded.

Mirra slammed her staff down. [Frost Nova] rippled out, coating the grass in a glittering sheet of ice. The foxes' paws skidded, their momentum betrayed by the frost.

[Tool Tip]:

The "Uncanny" Effect: Players who treat them like software scripts often find their prices raised or their quests glitched. Liam's [Friend of Spring] title works because he treats them as people who deserve a good meal, not just quest-givers.

The World: Despite being a "Death Game," the environment is hyper-realistic. These aren't just lines of code; they are individuals trapped in the same beautiful, terrifying holiday destination as the players.
