Chapter 16 - Mana Leech

Liam stopped spinning. His black iron greatsword came to rest on his shoulder with a heavy, metallic thud. Steam rolled off his damp singlet in thick waves, carrying the concentrated, heavy scent of cedar and smoked cinnamon across the blood-soaked ravine.

The formation behind him shifted instinctively. Three players stepped closer to his back. Then five. Then a dozen. No one said a word, but the logic was silent and absolute: standing near Liam meant staying alive.

Saffron walked forward, her tiger ears pinned flat against her skull. Her breathing was heavy and jagged. The pheromones rolling off Liam hit her like a physical blow to the solar plexus. Her beast-kin instincts were screaming, caught in a violent loop. Half of her wanted to challenge his dominance. The other half wanted to drop her sword and follow him into the dark. Her tail lashed against her thigh, a rhythmic, agitated whip-crack.

"You're not a normal player, Liam." Saffron's voice dropped into a low, vibrating purr she couldn't suppress. "That speed... that efficiency. You're a monster."

Liam didn't turn. He didn't have time for a mid-raid ego stroke. His Stamina bar hissed. It refilled to the brim in seconds as the [Mana Leech] passive drained the lingering life force of the forty Hobgoblins he had just deleted.

On the ridge above, the Shaman let out a screech of pure, unadulterated terror. It watched its elite vanguard lie in shredded heaps of iron and meat, decimated in less than sixty seconds. Desperate, it raised its bone-staff. The purple crystal flickered violently as it channelled a high-tier [Void-Bolt].

"Liam, move!" Ellie screamed, her voice sharp with urgency.

She was the only one who hadn't been paralysed by his stat-spike. To her, he wasn't a "glitch" or a "predator"—just the same stubborn guy she'd always known. He stood in the path of a lethal projectile. She lunged forward, her small hand locking around his bicep. She acted as the physical anchor that pulled him back from the cold, analytical trance of the Ring of Hestia.

Noir snapped out of her daze a split-second later. Her cheetah-kin speed blurred her into a streak of gold and black. She shoved a [Mana Shield] between Liam and the incoming lightning. The Void-Bolt slammed into the barrier with a deafening, bone-shaking crack, skidding Noir back five feet.

Her face was flushed a brilliant, angry crimson as she glanced over her shoulder, her pupils still blown wide.

"Don't just stand there staring, Chef!" Noir snapped, tail lashing with a rhythmic intensity she couldn't hide. "I'm only protecting my investment! If you die, I have to go back to eating those rotted field rations, and I refuse to starve because you got cocky!"

Saffron stepped up on Liam's other side. Her Rare Greatsword hummed with a low, predatory blue light. She leaned in, her shoulder pressing firmly against his. Her golden eyes scanned his profile with a hunger that had nothing to do with food.

"Noir's right. You're too valuable to lose," Saffron whispered, voice husky. "But that move... I've never seen a Vanguard move like that. After we kill this Shaman, you're coming to my private quarters. I want a full, personal breakdown of your... mechanics."

Ellie didn't wait for him to answer. She marched right between them, physically shoving her shoulder into Saffron's chest to break the contact. She grabbed Liam's hand, her grip tight, possessive, and grounded.

"He's my party member, Saffron," Ellie hissed, ears forward and defiant. "He's not a 'mechanic,' and he's not a tool. Back off before I forget you're the one in charge of this guild."

Liam ignored the storm of heat, jealousy, and pheromones swirling around him. He looked up at the ridge, his silver hair catching the harsh light. With 55 Speed, gravity was no longer a law. It was a suggestion.

"The Shaman is mine," Liam rumbled.

He didn't use a skill. He didn't need the system's help for this. He simply bent his knees and loaded the explosive power of his new stats. Then he jumped.

He launched into the air like a silver projectile, soaring twenty feet straight up. He blotted out the sun above the ridge. The Shaman's eyes went wide as the "Chef" loomed over it, a silhouette of impending ruin.

Liam's Vulcan Gauntlet surged with white-hot energy. The embers of Hestia's ring flickered in his eyes like a dying star.

[Absorb.]

His hand closed around the Shaman's throat, and the world went blinding, absolute white.

The blinding, absolute white didn't just erase the Shaman; it seemed to overwrite the very code of the ravine. For three long seconds, the world was a void of silent, bleached static. Then, the light finally snapped back into the colours of reality. The silence that followed was even more deafening.

The Shaman was gone. There was no corpse, no ashes—just a scorched, glass-like circle on the ridge where the stone had literally vitrified under the heat of the [Absorb] skill.

Suddenly, a system-wide announcement unfurled in the vision of every player in the Iron Hearth. It shimmered in a soft, ethereal gold.

[WORLD NOTIFICATION: First Boss Essence Harvest Successful.]

[Regional Achievement: The Hearth's Hunger.]

[All participants in 'Goblin Ridge' have received: +500 Global Affinity with NPCs.]

The ravine erupted in a confused, frantic murmur. "Affinity?" one of the mages shouted. She stared at her hands. "We didn't get gear? We got... liking points?"

"You idiot, think!" Noir's voice cut through the noise, her cheetah ears twitching with academic fervor. "In a world where we can't log out, NPC affinity is more valuable than gold. It means better prices, hidden quests, and protection from town guards. Liam didn't just win a fight; he just made us the most 'trusted' players in Aero Online."

But while the guild was distracted by their new social standing, a dark, pulsing crimson window hovered inches from Liam's face. It was invisible to everyone else.
