Chapter 24 — Heartbeat
Aken reached the stairwell— and the world thumped. Not sound, not vibration but a pressure. Deep and subterranean. A pulse that didn't travel through air, but through structure—through matter itself. The walls carried it, the floor answered it, and nd somewhere beneath it all— his body aligned with it. Aken stopped mid-step.
"…Did you feel that?."
Not a question but statement. Miokuo remained silent for a little longer than usual. Then—
"Yes master."
Another pulse followed, stronger, much closer. Behind him— the dungeon stated shifting. Aken turned, slow and deliberate. The vortex of cursed energy began to contract inside, its rotation tightening, compressing—like something drawing breath from a dead corpse. The remnants of the fallen entities stirred, black flesh mixed with blood scattered across the floor— moved. Not drifting, not fading, but pulled in. They dragged across the surface, lifted into the air, unraveling into strands of energy that streamed back into the core.
Reclaimed, that was the word
"…That's pretty cool," Aken muttered. "You're recycling."
The air grew heavier, temperature dropped by degrees. A third pulse— heavier than before. The system flickered to life.

Aken read it once, no double-checking, no hesitation. A faint smile surfaced across his cheek—controlled and mind-blowing.
"…Now we're getting somewhere."
Miokuo's tone softened, almost amused.
"You welcome escalation quite strangely master."
Aken rolled his shoulder, stepping away from the stairwell, back into open space.
"Why wouldn't I." His gaze fixed on the dungeon. "…Those two were appetizers..." His voice dropped to a base "...This one is the main course"
Another pulse, this time— the dungeon broke apart, not opened, not parted.
Torn.
The vortex distorted violently, expanding beyond its previous boundary, its structure destabilizing as something forced its way through from the other side. Aken didn't move, didn't blink.
He watched, and for the first time since arriving— he paused.
"…That's new."
It emerged from inside, not stepped, not formed.
Pushed through. And what came out— was no longer pretending to be human. It was larger, massively so. Three times the mass of the previous entities, its frame dense and overbuilt, like something constructed without regard for proportion or efficiency. But that wasn't the problem, its structure held. Stable and intentional, while its head— No, heads, two of them. Offset at unnatural angles, both fixed on him. One tilted, studying. The other rigid, unblinking.
The space around it warped subtly, the air bending under the weight of its presence. Cursed energy poured off it in waves, heavy, viscous but horrifyingly alive. Miokuo's voice dropped, analytical edge sharpening.
"…The output has increased significantly."
Aken exhaled once.
"…Yeah, you're right."
The creature moved a single step, the floor fractured beneath it—not from weight, but from pressure displacement. One head spoke.
"…You shall not remain."
The second followed, slightly out of phase.
"…Target confirmed."
Their voices overlapped imperfectly, misaligned just enough to fracture coherence. Aken drew Miokuo, the blade slid free with a clean, controlled sound. His grip settled naturally—no adjustment required. He tilted his head slightly, studying the creature. Then— he smiled, wider this time.
"…Finally." No wasted words, no theatrics, just recognition. "…Something worth the effort."
The creature responded instantly, without warning, without build-up. It moved, extremely fast, far too fast for something its size. A massive leg descended— Aken shifted laterally at the last possible moment. The impact detonated the floor, concrete ruptured outward in a violent spray as dust consumed the space.
"…Noted," Aken muttered, already repositioning. "You're faster than you look."
The second head snapped toward him, its mouth opened— energy condensed inside of it— fired. A compressed blast of cursed energy tore through the air. Aken's eyes sharpened.
"…Sprint."

Matter collapsed to an unnaturally, then reformed. Aken reappeared behind it— barely at this point. His stance stabilized instantly but his eyes narrowed.
"…That was too close."
Miokuo responded immediately.
"Cursed energy reserves are critically low."
"I know that."
No panic, only calculation. The creature turned— both heads locking onto him in perfect response time. It lunged again, this time— he didn't fully evade, he stepped inside its range. Too close for something that large to comfortably adjust. Miokuo cut across its midsection— the blade stalled halfway through.
"…Tch."
The creature reacted in an instant, its limb twisted unnaturally— Aken read it— pulled back just enough, the strike only grazed his side. His body slid across the floor.

Aken steadied himself.

"Exhale"
"…Better."
He wiped a trace of blood from the corner of his mouth, expression unchanged.Miokuo pulsed faintly.
"Disengagement is optimal master."
Aken shook his head once.
"…No."
His gaze sharpened, locking back onto the creature.
"Retreating now only delays the outcome." A small adjustment of his grip. "…I end it here, or I repeat it later."
The creature charged again, Aken ran forward. They collided, the impact fractured the floor beneath both of them. Miokuo met hardened cursed flesh— Aken pushed through its resistance. And something shifted, though subtle but real. The air around him tightened, his presence— condensed.
Miokuo lowered his tone.
"…Your cursed energy is reacting master."
No response. Aken stepped in again, much closer. Inside its control range, one head snapped downward— he angled his body— The strike missed by inches. Miokuo drove upward, deeper this time. The blade breached further into its core line, the creature staggered slightly.
"…There."
A minor flaw but exploitable. The second head roared— energy surged inside. Aken moved before release a backward pivot— he leaped. The blast tore through his previous position. The structure behind him shattered, debris cascading in the air. He landed cleanly his breathing was slightly controlled. Even at critical reserves, he looked up. And the shift was complete, no more testing, no more analysis. He had everything he needed.
"…Alright then."
A subtle adjustment in stance and weight distribution optimized. A faint grin returned.
"…We're done here."
Miokuo resonated in response, alignment was achieved. The creature charged, both heads roaring—Aken accelerated forward, directly into it. Because now— he understood the timing, the sequencing, the flaws in its coordination, and his own margins. His body moved without conscious delay. The distance between them vanished and for the first of all battles— the creature wasn't looking overwhelming. It was— solvable. Aken's voice came out low and controlled.
"…You're strong." One step in. "…But you lag. Way too much for your own good." Another.
"…And that's all I need."
It attacked— Aken slipped past, perfect clearance. Miokuo flashed in the air— a deeper cut tore across its core line. The creature staggered, more than before. And Aken didn't stop, didn't reset, didn't create distance. He pressed, relentlessly. Because the balance had shifted, and once it did—
The conclusion was no longer uncertain, it was inevitable. And surely—game over.
