Chapter 3: The Hunt Begins
The forest was no longer quiet.
It breathed. It listened. It watched.
Kael moved slowly, his senses sharper than before. The system pulsed faintly beneath his skin, syncing with every step he took. Silverfang stayed low at his side, its body tense, ears twitching at invisible threats. Behind him, the Nightscale Hatchling glided silently, its scales catching faint streaks of dim light.
Something had changed.
Or perhaps… he had.
> System Notification:
Quest Active: Survive the First Hunt
Threat Level: Increasing
Kael exhaled slowly, steadying his breath. The mist ahead thickened, curling unnaturally around the trees like living veins. His instincts screamed.
They were being watched.
A sharp snap echoed—
Silverfang lunged first.
A blur of motion crashed through the mist, claws slicing through the air where Kael had stood a second earlier. He stumbled back, barely avoiding the strike, his heart slamming violently against his ribs.
The creature revealed itself.
Tall. Lean. Twisted.
Its body resembled a panther, but its limbs were too long, its joints bending at unnatural angles. Its skin flickered between solid and shadow, like it existed half in another realm. Its eyes burned with a cold, hollow hunger.
> Creature Detected: Shade Stalker – Level: 5
Aggression: High
Warning: Lethal Threat
Kael's breath hitched.
"Level 5…?" he muttered. "That's not something I should be fighting yet."
The system pulsed sharply.
> New Sub-Objective: Survive or Overcome the Threat
The Shade Stalker moved again—
Faster this time.
Kael reacted on instinct. "Silverfang—left!"
The pup darted forward, intercepting with surprising speed, its body slamming into the creature mid-lunge. The impact forced the Shade Stalker to veer off course, claws gouging deep into the earth instead of Kael's chest.
"Nightscale—now!"
The hatchling hissed sharply, darting forward with a burst of speed Kael hadn't seen before. Its jaws snapped onto the creature's flank, scales glowing faintly as it injected a pulse of energy into the strike.
The Shade Stalker shrieked—an unnatural, distorted sound that made Kael's skin crawl.
But it didn't fall.
It adapted.
Its body flickered—then vanished.
Kael froze. "Where—?"
Pain exploded across his shoulder.
He barely managed to twist aside as claws tore through his shirt, grazing flesh. Blood welled instantly, warm and real.
"Damn it!"
Silverfang barked wildly, circling, trying to track the invisible predator. The hatchling coiled tightly, its glowing eyes scanning the shifting mist.
Kael's breathing grew heavier.
This wasn't a test.
This was a hunt.
And he was the prey.
> System Alert:
Host Condition: Minor Injury
Suggestion: Increase Focus / Utilize Bonded Beasts
Kael clenched his teeth. "Focus…"
The system pulsed again—stronger this time.
And suddenly… something clicked.
The bond.
He could feel them.
Not just beside him—but within range of his awareness. Silverfang's tension. The hatchling's sharp, calculating instincts. Their senses overlapped faintly with his own.
"...So that's how it works."
His eyes sharpened.
The mist shifted.
A flicker—barely visible—just behind him.
"Now!"
Kael spun, ducking low. Silverfang lunged at the exact same moment, teeth clamping onto something unseen. The Shade Stalker flickered back into view mid-struggle, its body glitching between solid and shadow.
"Hold it!" Kael shouted.
The hatchling struck again—this time aiming for the neck. Its jaws clamped down, energy surging brighter than before.
The creature thrashed violently, shrieking as both beasts held it in place.
Kael hesitated—just for a second.
Then stepped forward.
His hand trembled slightly as he reached out, the system reacting instantly to his intent. A faint glow wrapped around his fingers.
> Option Available: [Tame] [Kill]
His heart pounded.
This thing had tried to kill him.
But… it was strong.
And something inside him—something the system seemed to encourage—whispered one thing:
Power grows through risk.
Kael narrowed his eyes.
"…Tame."
The world seemed to pause.
The Shade Stalker's body convulsed as energy surged between them. A violent resistance slammed into Kael's mind—rage, hunger, instinct. It wasn't like the others. This one fought back.
Hard.
Kael gasped, dropping to one knee as the connection forced itself open.
"Submit…" he muttered through gritted teeth.
The system flared.
> Warning: High Resistance
Bond Failure Risk: Elevated
Silverfang growled louder, tightening its grip. The hatchling's energy pulsed faster, reinforcing the connection.
Kael pushed harder.
Not with strength—
But with will.
The resistance cracked.
Then broke.
> Beast Tamed: Shade Stalker – Level: 5 → Synced Level: 2
Affinity Gained: +10 Essence
New Skill Unlocked: Shadow Sense – Detect movement within obscured environments
Kael collapsed back, breathing heavily. Sweat clung to his skin, his body trembling from the strain.
But it was done.
The Shade Stalker lay still now, its form stabilized, its glowing eyes dimmed—but no longer hostile.
"…That was insane," he muttered.
> System Update:
Essence: 30/100
Beasts Bonded: 3
Control Stability: Moderate
Silverfang padded over, nudging his arm gently. The hatchling curled beside him, its glow dimming as it rested.
Kael let out a slow breath.
He had survived.
Barely.
But something about that fight felt… different.
Not just danger.
Growth.
Real growth.
A soft sound echoed through the trees.
Footsteps.
Slow. Deliberate.
Kael's body tensed instantly, but he didn't move. He already knew who it was.
"She's been watching," he muttered quietly.
From the mist, she emerged once more.
The same woman.
Untouched by the chaos.
Her gaze swept across the scene—the defeated Shade Stalker, the three bonded beasts… and finally, Kael himself.
This time, her expression changed.
Not amusement.
Not curiosity.
Something deeper.
"…You tamed it," she said softly.
Kael met her eyes, still catching his breath. "Yeah."
She stepped closer, slower than before. More deliberate. Her presence felt heavier now—less distant, more… aware.
"Most die trying," she continued, her voice quieter, almost thoughtful.
Kael gave a faint, tired smirk. "Guess I'm not most people."
Her gaze lingered on him longer than before.
And then—
She smiled.
Not predatory this time.
But something warmer.
More dangerous.
> System Notification:
Romantic Affinity Increased
Effect: Essence Regeneration Slightly Enhanced
Kael felt it instantly.
That same heat.
Stronger this time.
Not overwhelming—
But undeniable.
And for the first time since waking in this strange world…
Kael realized something important.
The system wasn't just about survival.
Or power.
Or beasts.
It was also about connection.
And that…
Might be the most dangerous path of all.
