**Chapter 457**
**Winds of Discontent**
**Scene 1 – Galactic News Network Broadcast**
The holographic feed cut sharply across billions of screens across the Core and Mid Rim. Tail, one of the most popular field reporters for the Galactic News Network, stood amid a roaring sea of protesters outside the Jedi Temple on Coruscant. His voice carried over the din with practiced urgency.
"Hello, Jeff! Hello, Galaxy! I can't say things are going well for the Jedi today. Over a hundred thousand sentient beings have gathered behind me, demanding decisive action from the Order. The signs held by the demonstrators are clear — some call for immediate defense of the Republic, while others denounce the Jedi outright, accusing them of incompetence and negligence!"
The camera panned across the crowd. Hundreds of beings — humans, Twi'leks, Rodians, Bothans, and more — chanted in unified anger. Many held glowing signs:
**"DEFEND THE REPUBLIC!"**
**"JEDI = INCOMPETENCE!"**
**"END THE WAR NOW — OR END THE JEDI!"**
Tail continued, raising his voice to be heard. "You can hear the demonstrators chanting: 'Defend the Republic!' and 'Down with the Jedi!' Oh, look — just now, the steps of the Temple, where Jedi Guards and clones are standing, were pelted with rotten fruit! I don't think anything like this has ever happened in my memory! I think it's time for the forces of law and order to intervene… yes, I hear the sirens of police transports!"
The feed switched smoothly to the Senate district. Lisa Rey, another star reporter, stood in front of the massive Senate building, where an even larger crowd had gathered.
"Thank you, Tail! And now we move on to the Senate building, where an emergency session is about to begin! Here, in front of the main building, thousands of demonstrators have gathered, demanding the same thing — defense and decisive action! Among the crowd, groups of Twi'leks are clearly visible, inspiring the entire gathering. However, other sentient beings are also actively participating…"
Lisa paused, pressing a finger to her earpiece. "Oh, yes! A motorcade of government airspeeders is arriving at the Senate building. It's undoubtedly Chancellor Palpatine and several Jedi, who have come to this meeting to explain the victory on Ryloth and address accusations of corruption involving Senator Orn Free Taa…"
The camera zoomed in as Palpatine stepped out of his sleek airspeeder, flanked by Masters Windu and Yoda, along with several other Jedi. The crowd erupted in angry shouts and whistles. Palpatine raised a hand calmly, speaking a few words that seemed to ease some tension.
Lisa continued excitedly, "Palpatine seems to have stopped… yes, he's saying something to the demonstrators… The crowd seems to have cooled down a bit. Not bad, not bad at all…"
The broadcast cut to a commercial for the new PtH-45 airspeeder, but the tension across Coruscant remained palpable.
**Scene 2 – Jedi Temple, Assembly Hall**
Shaak Ti blinked, realizing she had lost the thread of the conversation. It was only natural. While military operations consumed much of their time, the Jedi still had other duties. Even when not sitting on the Council, the Masters had little free time.
She refocused on the speaker — a senior Jedi from the Diplomatic Corps — addressing a gathering in one of the large Assembly Halls. Present were Grand Master Yoda, Plo Koon, Kit Fisto, Adi Gallia, and two dozen Knights and Masters, including Palael Harimo (head of the Seer Corps) and Master Dar-Kai Prenston from Intelligence.
"…Therefore, it is clear that Aargau is involved," the speaker continued. "A planet in the Zug system, located in the Galactic Core. It serves as headquarters for the Bank of Aargau, a division of the InterGalactic Banking Clan. A series of financial transactions suggest that not all is clean on this planet. Perhaps a coup or something similar is being plotted. Unfortunately, it is impossible to track such incidents using standard data. In particular, according to Aargau law, all its citizens have the right to bear arms for self-defense."
Yoda tapped his gimer stick thoughtfully. "I propose sending a clone detachment to the planet for greater security. Negotiations must be held with the rulers of Aargau. I recommend Knight Boltar Swan for this mission."
The discussion continued, but Shaak Ti's mind wandered again. Reports from Ryloth painted a picture of success, yet public opinion was turning sharply against the Jedi. Protests outside the Temple had grown uglier by the hour. Rotten fruit, shouted insults, demands for the Order to be stripped of military command — it was unprecedented.
She glanced at Master Windu, whose face remained impassive, though his eyes betrayed deep concern.
**Scene 3 – Senate Chambers**
Bail Organa hurried into the Alderaanian delegation box and sat down beside Padmé Amidala.
"What did I miss?" he asked quietly.
"Just another attempt by Palpatine to gain even more power," Mon Mothma replied, her voice tight.
Padmé handed Bail a datapad. "Emergency Amendment 118a. It would grant Chancellor Palpatine unprecedented authority to redeploy military assets in areas of overlapping jurisdiction. The primary goal is to shift direct responsibility for defense from planetary and sector governments to Coruscant."
Mon Mothma narrowed her eyes. "Along with Amendment 118a, Bill 123/45/16 calls for the establishment of a so-called General Headquarters responsible for developing military operations independently of the Jedi, who would be required to heed their recommendations. It would be composed of distinguished military personnel from across the Republic."
Bail finished reading and leaned back. "The Jedi won't agree to this. It's completely unacceptable to them."
"They have no choice," Padmé said softly. "Public opinion — and the lion's share of senators — is on Palpatine's side. After Ryloth, after the losses, after Zygerria… people are afraid. They want decisive action, and Palpatine is giving them the appearance of it."
Mon Mothma added, "One acquaintance told me that Jedi Intelligence is spending more time searching for Darth Sidious — who, according to them, wields influence in both the CIS and the Republic Senate. It's nonsense, frankly. They're looking for a phantom while Palpatine seizes more power right in front of them."
Bail rubbed his temples. "What about this General Headquarters? Is there any hope we can get our people placed there?"
Mon Mothma shook her head. "We'll try. But Palpatine is moving too fast."
As the emergency session began, the chamber filled with tense murmurs. Chancellor Palpatine stepped up to the podium, his expression one of solemn concern.
"Honorable Senators," he began, voice warm yet authoritative, "today we face a grave threat. Not only from the Separatists, but from division within our own ranks. The Jedi have served us valiantly, but the time has come for clearer chains of command. I propose we pass Amendment 118a and establish the Republic Strategic Command Headquarters to better coordinate our defense."
The chamber erupted in a mix of applause and angry shouts.
Outside, the crowds continued to chant.
Inside, the Republic edged closer to centralized power.
And on the *Gray Wolf*, far from Coruscant, Dagon Marek watched the live feed with narrowed eyes, the red star in his left eye burning brighter.
The war was changing — and not for the better.
