Chapter 10 - The King's Claim

"Everyone knows."

Lyra froze halfway to the window.

Diatrus didn't look up from fastening the dark armor across his chest.

"The entire palace felt the power you unleashed last night," she said carefully."You almost destroyed a wing of the castle."

"I controlled it."

"You shattered the royal wards."

He finally turned."And you are still alive."

The simple statement silenced her.He stepped closer, adjusting the black cloak falling over his shoulders. Every movement carried authority now…heavier than before.

Something had changed,it wasn't anger or possession but a decision.

"The council has summoned me," he said.

Lyra's stomach tightened. "Because of Sappira?"

"Because I chose you."The words landed heavier than expected.

She swallowed. "You didn't choose me."

His gaze darkened.

"I defended what belongs under my protection."

"That's not the same thing."

A faint smirk touched his lips."You continue to argue with the king. Fascinating."

Before she could reply, a pulse of magic surged through the chamber doors.

A royal summons…ancient runes burned gold across the wood.Diatrus's expression hardened instantly."They grow impatient."

Lyra stepped forward. "Then go."

He didn't move.Instead, he reached out and brushed a strand of hair from her face absentminded and instinctive. The demons inside him stirred uneasily.Touching her calmed them again…so Dangerously.

"You stay here," he said.

"I am not fragile."

"You are the center of a prophecy powerful enough to start a civil war."

That instantly shut her up.He turned toward the door but paused.Without looking back."No one enters this chamber."

The command rolled outward through the palace like thunder…A royal authority which was absolute…

The doors opened. And the Ocean Empire felt its king coming...the council chamber erupted the moment Diatrus entered.

Nobles stood, generals bowed,High mages lowered their heads. But tension hung thick in the air.At the center stood Kael, hands clasped behind his back, smiling carefully and respectful.

"My emperor."

Diatrus walked past him without

acknowledgement and took the throne.Power settled instantly."Speak."

No greeting nor ceremony.

The council exchanged uneasy looks before Elder Varion stepped forward.

"You defended the human girl against Lady Sappira."

"Yes."

"You nearly killed one of your oldest allies."

"She attacked what was under my protection."

Murmurs spread.

Kael stepped forward smoothly."Your Majesty," he said mildly, "the concern is not discipline… but perception."

Diatrus's eyes shifted toward him."Explain."

Kael bowed slightly."The empire believes the prophecy is influencing you."

Silence dangerously fell. One general added nervously, "Soldiers whisper that the Destroyer has softened."

Another noble spoke."They fear decisions will now be made by… emotion."

The word lingered like poison.Diatrus leaned back slowly."And you?"

His gaze locked onto Kael."What do you believe?"

Kael's smile never faltered."I believe the empire survives because you are feared."He paused deliberately.

"Fear weakens when attachment appears."

The implication was clear.Diatrus's fingers tapped once against the throne arm.

The room darkened subtly."You called me here," he said quietly, "to question my authority."

"No," Kael replied smoothly."To protect it."A lie wrapped perfectly in loyalty.

Diatrus stood. The entire council instinctively stepped back.

"If any among you believes I cannot rule," he said calmly, "challenge me."

No one moved nor breathed. The emperor's aura expanded crushing, ancient, monstrous.Power pressed against every soul present.

Even Kael felt it.But he smiled internally, yes…Show them power and drive them further apart.Exactly as planned.

Diatrus's voice lowered."The prophecy does not control me."His eyes burned."I control destiny."

The declaration ended the meeting. He turned and walked out without dismissal and no one dared stop him.

Lyra sensed him returning before the doors opened. The air shifted, heavy and Restless. He entered silently.

"You're angry," she said.

"I am surrounded by cowards."

She studied him carefully. "They're afraid of losing you."

"They are afraid of losing control."He removed his cloak, tossing it aside.

"They want a weapon," he continued. "Not a ruler."

"And what do you want?"The question caught him off guard.

He looked at her long andIntensely."I want silence," he admitted. His voice lowered."When I am near you… everything becomes quiet."

Her heartbeat stumbled."That scares you."

"Yes."

Honesty surprised them both.He moved closer unconsciously, too close."You change me," he said.

Lyra's breath hitched."I don't even know how…"Before she could respond;A violent explosion shook the palace.

The walls trembled and Magic alarms screamed through the empire.Diatrus's head snapped toward the window.

"Intruders."

Another blast followed.Screams echoed faintly through distant corridors.

Lyra's eyes widened. "The palace is under attack?"

His expression turned lethal."No."He felt it now,it was dark magic…ancient and calculated.

"They are not attacking the palace," he said slowly."They are coming for you."

The chamber doors burst open as a bloodied royal guard stumbled inside.

"Your Majesty..!"He collapsed to one knee.

"The northern gate has fallen… unknown forces breached the imperial barrier… shadow beasts…"

Diatrus's aura detonated violently.Kael…the timing was too perfect.

He turned to Lyra."You stay behind me."

"I'm not hiding while people die.""You are not dying today."

Another explosion rocked the castle.Cracks spread across the chamber walls.Outside, monstrous roars echoed across the ocean kingdom.

War had arrived at the capital itself.Diatrus extended his hand…dark armor formed instantly around him, shadows shaping into weapons older than memory.

His eyes glowed brighter than ever."Whoever sent them," he said coldly, "has declared war on their emperor."

Lyra stepped beside him instead of behind him.He noticed and said nothing. But something fierce warmed in his chest.

Together, they stepped toward the chaos.

And deep within the burning corridors,Kael watched the destruction unfold through a hidden spell mirror.

His smile widened."The king protects the girl…"Flames reflected in his eyes."…and the empire begins to burn."

He crushed the spell mirror in his hand."Phase two begins."

As Diatrus and Lyra reached the outer balcony, the sight below stole her breath.Shadow creatures poured through shattered barriers.Soldiers fought desperately.Mages struggled to hold collapsing wards…the capital was falling into panic.

Diatrus raised his hand and the sky darkened instantly. The ocean itself rose behind the palace like a living wall.

Ancient powers gathered, which were so terrifying and divine.Lyra felt it then, the prophecy awakening stronger than ever.

Not around Diatrus but around both of them.He glanced at her briefly."Stay alive."

She met his gaze."Only if you do."

A faint smile ghosted across his lips. Then he stepped forward and unleashed the wrath of an emperor upon the battlefield.

Far away, ancient seals cracked open.

Old gods stirred and the prophecy shifted once again not toward destruction. But toward something no one had predicted.
