Chapter 26 - Chapter 26: The Arrival of War

Border of the Land of Fire

The atmosphere along the border was suffocating.

Just five days earlier, the forces of the Land of Fire and the Land of Lightning had been locked in a tense standoff at Falling Rock Valley, located within the Land of Hot Springs. Neither side had made a decisive move, each waiting for the other to reveal a weakness.

Then, without warning, the Hidden Cloud Village launched a sudden and ferocious offensive.

The attack came like a thunderclap.

Konoha's frontline forces were caught completely unprepared. The initial defense collapsed under the overwhelming assault, and casualties mounted rapidly. Within a matter of days, the battle line was pushed back relentlessly, retreating all the way to the border of the Land of Fire.

Only through desperate resistance—and the timely arrival of reinforcements—did Konoha manage to stabilize the situation.

The flames of war had nearly spread into the very heart of the Land of Fire.

Now, both sides stood once again in opposition—but this time, the balance had shifted.

Konoha Frontline Headquarters

The camp was eerily quiet.

There was no laughter, no idle chatter, no sign of relaxation. The usual liveliness of ninja encampments had vanished, replaced by a heavy, oppressive silence.

Some shinobi sat with their eyes closed, conserving energy. Others meticulously checked their weapons—kunai, shuriken, explosive tags—ensuring everything was ready.

Even whispers were kept to a minimum.

Everyone understood one simple truth:

At any moment, they could be called to the battlefield—and not everyone would return.

Aoki Yoru stood at the edge of the camp, observing the scene.

So it's finally come…

The uneasy premonition he had felt for days had now become reality.

War had arrived.

Their team had been mobilized as part of the conscription order. When they had gathered at the gates of the village, he had seen many familiar faces—fellow shinobi who, like him, had once trained together in relative peace.

There was Kurenai Yuhi, calm yet serious.

There was Asuma Sarutobi, cigarette in hand, his expression unusually solemn.

He also spotted the new generation of the Ino–Shika–Chō formation, still young but already standing on the brink of war.

And then there were his former classmates—many still Genin.

Their faces carried a mix of nervous excitement and naïve anticipation.

They did not yet understand.

They did not yet realize that war was not glory—it was a grinder that devoured lives without mercy.

Aoki Yoru looked at them quietly.

How many of you will still be alive when this is over?

Survival Above All

Nearby, Kenta and Yui stood with him, their voices low as they discussed their plans.

Unlike the younger shinobi, the three of them were painfully aware of the reality they were about to face.

They did not talk about victory.

They did not talk about glory.

They spoke of only one thing:

Survival.

After a long discussion, they summarized their strategy in a single word.

Live.

They agreed on several principles:

Never use full strength in large-scale battles

Avoid drawing attention

Retreat whenever necessary

Preserve stamina and resources

Prioritize survival over heroics

Aoki Yoru nodded inwardly.

This was the mindset of those who intended to outlast the war—not become its casualties.

As they exchanged personal techniques, even he found himself surprised.

Kenta revealed that he could control his breathing so precisely that he could slow his heartbeat, reduce blood flow, and mimic the state of a corpse—perfect for feigning death on the battlefield.

Yui demonstrated an even more subtle technique. By manipulating moisture in the air, she could refract light around her body, creating a blurred, almost invisible outline.

Aoki Yoru blinked.

These aren't survival techniques… these are assassination-level abilities.

If used offensively, they would be terrifying.

The ninja world really is full of hidden talents…

The Summons

Just then, a white ninja dog sprinted toward them.

It came to a halt in front of the group and spoke clearly:

"Woof! Apologies for the interruption. Commander Shikaku requests your presence immediately at headquarters."

The three exchanged glances.

Their expressions hardened instantly.

The relaxed atmosphere from moments ago vanished.

This was it.

Inside the Command Tent

The moment they entered, a thick smell of tobacco hit them.

At the center of the tent stood a massive sand table.

Miniature flags—red and black—covered its surface, representing the opposing forces. Their chaotic arrangement reflected the unstable situation on the battlefield.

Standing before it was Shikaku Nara.

His brows were deeply furrowed, and his eyes were bloodshot from exhaustion. He didn't even look up as they entered.

"You're here."

His voice was hoarse.

The three stepped forward and bowed.

"Commander Shikaku."

Only then did he raise his head.

"The Land of Lightning has seized the Land of Hot Springs and pushed the front line to our border," he began.

"On the surface, they hold the advantage—but their supply line has been stretched thin."

He tapped the sand table sharply.

"This is Sinking Rock Valley."

Aoki Yoru's gaze followed the baton.

The terrain was narrow and elongated, like a deep crack carved into the earth. Steep rock walls rose on both sides, and a river wound through the valley floor.

It was a natural fortress.

Easy to defend. Difficult to attack.

And now—it was the enemy's supply hub.

The Mission

"According to intelligence," Shikaku continued, "they've stockpiled enough supplies here to support a thousand-man force."

Food. Medicine. Weapons. Thousands of explosive tags.

Everything needed for a sustained campaign.

"Our own reinforcements are not yet ready," he added grimly. "If their main force arrives, they will immediately launch a large-scale offensive."

"If that happens…"

He paused.

"The border will collapse."

Silence filled the tent.

Then he looked directly at them.

"You have one mission."

His voice was firm.

"Destroy that supply depot at all costs."

"Burn it. Blow it up. Sink it into the river—I don't care how."

"But it must be destroyed before their main force arrives."

Aoki Yoru felt his heartbeat quicken.

This wasn't just a mission.

This was a gamble that could decide the fate of the entire front line.

A Desperate Assignment

"Understood," they replied in unison.

Aoki Yoru hesitated, then raised his hand.

"Commander… is it just the three of us?"

Shikaku met his gaze.

"Kakashi will join you."

Only four people.

Aoki Yoru's pupils contracted slightly.

Four people… to destroy a heavily defended supply base.

"This is all I can spare," Shikaku said quietly.

"The reinforcements won't arrive for a week."

"The enemy's main force will arrive in two days."

"This mission determines whether the war reaches the heart of the Land of Fire."

There was no room for refusal.

No room for hesitation.

This was war.

Preparing for Death

Outside the tent, the three walked in silence.

Finally, Aoki Yoru spoke.

"This mission… we might not come back from it."

Kenta and Yui said nothing—but their expressions said everything.

"Prepare everything," he continued. "Weapons, tools, supplies. Don't hold back."

"As long as we're alive, money can be earned again."

The two nodded.

This was no longer a routine mission.

This was a fight for survival.

Kakashi's Return

By evening, Kakashi Hatake returned.

The four gathered together.

Kakashi looked at them calmly.

"For this mission," he said, "your priority is survival."

Aoki Yoru blinked in surprise.

He had expected Kakashi to emphasize the importance of the mission.

Instead—

"Only by living," Kakashi continued, "is there a future."

Something in his tone had changed.

It was no longer the cold detachment of the past.

It was something deeper.

Something learned through loss.

A New Strategy

Kakashi's expression shifted slightly.

"This isn't necessarily a suicide mission."

He turned to Aoki Yoru.

"Your summoning beast—the Yatagarasu."

Aoki Yoru immediately understood.

"Aerial assault…"

Kakashi nodded.

"Exactly."

"If we can locate a weak point in their defenses, we can strike from above."

"The explosive eggs of the Yatagarasu will be perfect."

"If we're lucky…"

"We can destroy the entire supply depot without engaging directly."

Hope.

A small, fragile hope—but hope nonetheless.

Final Assignments

Kakashi quickly outlined the plan:

Aoki Yoru: reconnaissance and identifying weak points

Yui: interference and disruption

Kenta: close-range support and assault

Kakashi: coordination and execution

"We adapt based on the situation," Kakashi concluded.

"No rigid plan survives the battlefield."

The three nodded.

Departure

Night fell.

The camp grew even quieter.

In the distance, the faint glow of watchfires flickered against the darkness.

Kakashi stood up abruptly.

"It's time."

He looked at the three of them.

"Ten minutes."

"Prepare yourselves."

Aoki Yoru took a deep breath.

Above them, the sky stretched endlessly—silent and indifferent.

Somewhere beyond that darkness lay Sinking Rock Valley.

And within it—

A battlefield where life and death would be decided in an instant.

War had arrived.

And there was no turning back.
