Chapter 2: Fragments of What Was Lost
Morning came softly.
Too softly.
The light slipped through the curtains in thin lines, stretching across the hospital floor like nothing had happened. Like someone heart hadn't been broken in this very room just hours ago.
Aria sat quietly on the bed, her hands folded in her lap.
Still
Calm
Controlled.
On the outside.
Inside, everything was still shattered in pieces
She hadn't slept Not really.
Every time she closed her eyes, she heard it again.
"I'm actually pursuing your best friend."
It didn't hurt less.
It didn't fade.
If anything, it settled deeper it hurt in the most barbaric Way.
Like something permanently slicing her heart carefulo not to miss any single part.
Across the room, Anderson stood by the window, speaking quietly on the phone. His voice was low, controlled, but there was something in it. Something sharp. Something protective.
Aria watched him without meaning to.
He hadn't left.
Not once.
Not even for a moment.
And that alone felt unfamiliar.
Strange.
Comforting.
Dangerous.
She looked away quickly.
No.
She couldn't start thinking like that.
Not now.
A knock came at the door.
"Come in," Anderson said.
The doctor stepped in, adjusting his glasses slightly. He gave Aria a brief, gentle smile before turning to Anderson.
"Mr. Anderson, can I speak with you outside for a moment?"
Anderson glanced at Aria.
Just for a second.
As if checking.
As if asking silently.
Aria lowered her gaze, playing her part perfectly.
He nodded and stepped out with the doctor.
The hallway was quiet.
The doctor exhaled slowly before speaking.
"She did lose part of her memory."
Anderson's expression didn't change, but something in his posture tightened.
"What kind of memory?"
"Her childhood," the doctor said carefully. "And parts of her teenage years."it's a rare case I have seen so far...
Silence followed.
Anderson's jaw tightened slightly.
"Will it come back?"
"It might," the doctor replied. "But memory is delicate. It depends on emotional triggers, familiarity, environment, people."
He paused, then added,
"You'll have to help her remember."
Anderson's eyes darkened slightly.
Help her remember.
He didn't respond immediately.
But something shifted in him.
Something deeper than concern.
Something more personal.
"Make sure she feels safe," the doctor continued. "Don't force anything. Let her find it naturally."
Anderson gave a small nod.
"I understand."
The doctor hesitated briefly.
There was something he didn't say.
Something he chose to keep.
Because Aria had asked him to.
Because her current memory was perfectly intact.
And this situation unfolding around her
She wanted to see it for herself.
When Anderson stepped back in, Aria looked up slowly.
Their eyes met.
And something passed between them.
Unspoken.
Unreadable.
"What did he say?" she asked softly.
Her voice carried just enough curiosity.
Just enough vulnerability.
Anderson walked closer.
Slow.
Measured.
"You lost some memories," he said.
Aria's fingers tightened slightly under the blanket.
"Which ones?"
He paused.
"Your childhood," he said quietly. "And parts of your teenage years."
Her heart skipped.
Not because of the lie.
But because of him.
Because of the way he said it.
Carefully.
Like it mattered.
Like she mattered.
"Oh," she whispered.
Her gaze dropped.
Pretending.
But also thinking.
Childhood.
Teenage years.
That meant him.
Did that include him?
A strange feeling stirred in her chest.
Confusing.
Familiar.
Unfinished.
Anderson watched her closely.
Not pushing.
Not rushing.
Just there.
Again.
Always there.
"We'll help you remember," he said.
Aria felt that word settle somewhere deep.
Dangerously deep.
Later that afternoon, Aria stepped out of the room quietly.
She needed air.
Space.
Anything that didn't feel like the walls were closing in on her.
The hallway was quiet.
Too quiet.
She walked slowly, her steps soft against the floor, until something caught her attention.
Voices.
Familiar ones.
She stopped.
Just before turning the corner.
Her heart started beating faster.
Not from fear.
From instinct.
From something inside her already knowing.
She shouldn't look.
She really shouldn't.
But she did.
And everything inside her broke again.
Ethan stood there.
Close to Lillian.
Too close.
His arm wrapped possessively around her waist, pulling her just slightly toward him like it was natural. Like it belonged there.
Lillian smiled up at him, soft and easy.
Comfortable.
Like she had always been there.
Aria's breath caught.
Her body went still.
Cold.
Heavy.
Like something inside her refused to move forward.
Ethan said something low.
She couldn't hear the words.
But she saw the way his expression softened.
The way his eyes lingered.
The way his hand tightened just a little at her waist.
And then
He leaned in.
Slow.
Casual.
Effortless.
And pressed a soft kiss to Lillian's lips.
That was it.
Not dramatic.
Not loud.
Not even long.
Just a small, simple kiss on the lip.
But to Aria
It felt like everything shattered at once.
Her chest tightened so sharply it hurt to breathe.
Her fingers trembled at her sides.
Her vision blurred slightly.
Because she remembered.
Not the past.
Not memories.
But feelings.
How long had she waited for something like that?
Something so small even if it was just a peck or affectionate hug.
So gentle.
So real.
And he had never given it to her.
Not once not even a little..
But here
With Lillian
It came so easily.
So naturally.
Like Aria had never even been an option.
A tear slipped down her cheek and more tears.
She didn't wipe it.
She couldn't.
Her body felt too heavy.
Too slow.
Too broken.
So this is what it looks like
When he loves someone.
The thought crushed her.
Because now she understood.
It wasn't that Ethan didn't know how to love.
He just never loved her and just didn't even try to love her even just a little.
She stepped back slowly, her back brushing against the wall behind her.
Her breathing uneven.
Her chest aching.
Everything she had given
Everything she had sacrificed
All of it
For someone who had already chosen someone else.
"You shouldn't be here."
The voice came quietly.
Close.
Aria froze.
She turned slightly.
Anderson stood behind her.
His gaze shifted once toward Ethan and Lillian.
Then back to her.
His expression changed.
Not soft.
Not calm.
Cold.
Sharp.
Protective.
He stepped closer.
Not touching her.
But close enough that she felt it.
That steady presence.
That quiet strength.
Aria quickly wiped her face, forcing her voice to stay steady.
"I just needed air," she said softly.
Anderson didn't respond immediately.
His eyes stayed on her.
Taking everything in.
The tears she tried to hide.
The pain she tried to bury.
The silence she wrapped around herself.
His jaw tightened slightly.
Then he moved.
Positioning himself just enough to block her view.
To shield her from them.
From that moment.
From that pain.
"Let's go back," he said quietly.
Aria hesitated.
Just for a second.
Then she nodded.
Because right now
That was the only place that felt a little less suffocating.
And as she walked beside him
Close
Protected
Silent
For the first time since everything began
She didn't feel completely alone.
---
But the day wasn't done with her.
Not yet.
Because pain, it seemed, had layers.
And she had only just touched the surface.
When they returned to the room, Aria thought it would end there.
That she could sit quietly.
Breathe slowly.
Pretend nothing else could hurt more than what she had already seen.
She was wrong.
A soft knock came again.
And before anyone could respond
The door opened.
Lillian walked in first.
Bright.
Gentle.
Smiling.
Like nothing had happened.
Like she hadn't just stood in a hallway being held the way Aria had once dreamed of.
Ethan followed behind her.
Casual.
Unbothered.
Like Aria's presence in this world had already faded.
"We came to check on you," Lillian said softly, stepping closer.
Her voice carried concern.
Too perfect.
Too practiced.
Aria stared at her.
Just for a second.
And something inside her twisted.
Because she knew that voice.
She had trusted that voice.
Confided in it.
Believed in it.
And now
It sounded too disgusting to listen to.
"I brought you something," Lillian added, holding out a small container.
Fruit.
Cut neatly.
Carefully arranged.
Just like always.
Just like the best friend Aria thought she had.
Aria's fingers curled slightly.
She wanted to ask.
Wanted to scream.
Wanted to demand answers.
But she didn't.
She couldn't.
Because she was still playing the role.
Still pretending.
Still watching.
Ethan didn't even come closer to her.
Not really.
He stood slightly behind Lillian.
Close enough that their shoulders brushed.
Close enough that it meant something.
Aria noticed everything now.
Every distance.
Every closeness.
Every detail she had once ignored.
And then
It happened.
Small.
Subtle.
But enough.
Lillian reached out
Not to Aria
But to Ethan
Her fingers lightly brushing his wrist
As if it was natural
As if it was allowed
As if Aria wasn't right there watching
And Ethan
Didn't pull away
Didn't hesitate
Didn't even look surprised
Instead
His hand turned slightly
Fitting into hers
Like it belonged there
Like it had always been there
Aria's breath stopped.
Again.
Her chest tightened so painfully she thought it might break this time.
Because this wasn't hidden anymore.
This wasn't behind a corner.
This wasn't something she stumbled upon.
This was right in front of her.
Open.
Careless.
Cruel.
And still
They acted like nothing was wrong.
Like she was the one who didn't exist.
Like her heart wasn't breaking right in front of them.
Aria forced a small smile.
Weak.
Barely there.
"…Thank you," she said softly.
Her voice didn't shake.
But her soul did.
Anderson's gaze shifted.
Slowly.
From their hands
To Aria's face.
And something in his expression darkened completely.
Not confusion.
Not surprise.
Something else.
Something dangerous.
Something that had been building quietly
And had just reached its edge.
The room felt smaller.
Tighter.
Like something was about to happen.
Like something was about to snap.
And Aria
Standing in the middle of it all
Finally realized
This wasn't just betrayal anymore
This was a game
And she was no longer the one controlling it
And just as that thought settled in her chest
Anderson moved.
One step forward.
His presence filling the room instantly.
His voice low.
Calm.
But carrying something that made the air shift.
"From now on," he said slowly
His eyes never leaving Ethan
"She stays with me."
Silence dropped.
Heavy.
Sharp.
Unavoidable.
Aria's heart skipped.
Ethan's expression changed for the first time.
Lillian froze.
And Anderson
Didn't look away.
Not even for a second.
And that was when Aria realized
This
This moment
Was about to change everything.
