Chapter 44 - The Crack in the System

Something changed in how silence behaved.

It wasn't calm anymore.

It was… divided.

I could feel it before I could understand it.

Like reality itself had developed a weak point.

A place where interpretation didn't fully align.

She stood beside him.

Not me.

Not fully me.

And that distinction was starting to blur in ways I couldn't fight anymore.

"You're reacting again," the reflection said.

I frowned slightly.

"…I'm always reacting."

But even that sentence felt unstable.

Like it didn't fully commit to being true.

The reflection didn't respond immediately.

It looked at me.

Not as a threat.

Not as an error.

But as something already halfway processed.

"Your responses are becoming predictable," it said softly.

Predictable.

That word didn't hurt.

It reduced.

I stepped back.

Instinct.

But even instinct felt delayed now.

Like it was being retrieved instead of generated.

And then—

something happened that shouldn't have.

The space between us… flickered.

Not visually.

Structurally.

Like two versions of the same moment overlapped for half a second.

I saw it.

Just for an instant.

Another outcome.

Another me.

Still standing.

But speaking differently.

Moving faster.

Losing nothing.

Then it vanished.

My breath stopped.

"…Did you see that?" I whispered.

She didn't answer immediately.

And that silence told me everything before she did.

"Yes," she said softly.

"…It's starting to branch."

Branch.

Not break.

Not collapse.

Branch.

Like I wasn't alone in being me anymore.

The reflection tilted its head.

For the first time—

not in observation.

But in recognition of instability in the system itself.

"Interference detected," it said.

My chest tightened.

Not fear.

Not relief.

Something deeper.

Because that wasn't aimed at me.

It was aimed at reality.

She stepped slightly closer to it.

Not to me.

Not away.

Just toward understanding.

And said quietly:

"…You're not the only version anymore."

That sentence didn't comfort me.

It multiplied me.

The reflection looked at her.

Then at me.

Then at the space between us.

And for the first time—

it didn't speak immediately.

And in that pause…

I felt something dangerous.

Uncertainty inside the system itself.
