Chapter 13 - The Obsidian Noon

The heat of the arena didn't vanish instantly, but without the Ash-Knight's presence, the air stopped burning. The orange glow of the lava pits dimmed into a deep, somber red.

Rudra sat on the edge of the black glass floor, his legs dangling over a small rift where cooling magma moved like thick honey. He checked his internal clock.

"It's Noon," he said, his voice sounding hollow in the vast arena. "On the surface, the sun would be at its peak right now."

Ananya sat a few feet away, her armor scratched and her hair damp with sweat. She had pulled her boots off, letting her feet rest on the cool obsidian. "Noon... the time of greatest heat. It makes sense why this floor was so brutal. The Dhougen follows the cycle of the world above, even if we can't see the sky."

She reached into her storage bag and pulled out two thick, dried meat wraps and a bottle of chilled water she had been keeping in a specialized cooling talisman. She tossed one to Rudra.

"Eat," she commanded. "Level 4 requires more calories. If you don't fuel the body, the Prana will start eating your muscles instead."

Rudra caught the wrap and began to eat. It was salty and tough, but it tasted like heaven after the sulfur and ash. As he chewed, he opened his private interface, keeping his eyes forward so Ananya wouldn't notice.

[System Feature Unlocked: Resonance Map]

Description: Allows the user to detect the "Heartbeat" of the floor.

Current Range: 50 Meters.

Note: You can now sense hidden chambers and "Trap-Doors" that others cannot see.

Rudra looked at the blue portal at the end of the room. With the new Resonance Map, the portal didn't just look like a hole in space; it looked like a pulsing vein of energy.

"What are you looking at?" Ananya asked, her eyes half-closed as she leaned back against the stone throne.

"Just the portal," Rudra lied smoothly. "It looks... different than the others."

"It should. The Seventh Floor is the 'Threshold,'" Ananya explained, her tone turning serious. "The first five floors are for beginners. The sixth is the test. But from the seventh floor onward... that's where the Dhougen truly tries to kill you. We won't just be fighting animals or knights anymore. We'll be fighting the environment itself."

She looked at Rudra's shoulder, where the healing elixir had closed the wound, though a faint scar remained. "You've gained a lot of power today, Rudra. But don't let Level 4 make you arrogant. I've seen Level 6 warriors get turned into statues because they thought they were invincible."

Rudra nodded. He knew she was right. His "System" was a tool, but his life was still on the line. He felt the cooling effect of the noon-rest settling into his bones. The silence of the arena was peaceful, a rare moment of calm before they descended into whatever nightmare the Seventh Floor held.

"Five more minutes," Rudra said, closing his eyes.

"Ten," Ananya corrected, her breathing slowing as she drifted into a light, warrior's nap. "The Seventh Floor won't give us the luxury of sitting down."

Rudra watched the lavender-red shadows shift across the obsidian floor. He felt the secret pulse of the Dhougen beneath him, a rhythmic thump-thump that matched his own heartbeat. He wasn't just a visitor anymore. He was becoming a part of this place.

The ten minutes of rest felt like seconds. Rudra opened his eyes, feeling the new Level 4 Prana circulating smoothly through his veins. The exhaustion was still there, lurking in his muscles, but his mind was sharp.

"Time's up," Rudra said, standing and shaking out his arms.

Ananya groaned, pulling her boots back on and lacing them tight. "I could have stayed there for an hour. But you're right. The longer we sit, the more our muscles will lock up."

They stood together and walked toward the massive blue portal. As they stepped through, Rudra felt a violent shift in the atmosphere. It wasn't just a change in temperature; it was a total collapse of the environment.

The Seventh Floor: The Glacial Abyss

The heat of the Sixth Floor vanished instantly, replaced by a cold so intense it felt like being stabbed by a thousand needles.

They weren't in a desert anymore. They were standing on a narrow ledge of ice, overlooking a vast, frozen canyon. Giant glaciers hung from the ceiling like frozen teeth, and a howling blizzard obscured everything beyond ten meters.

[Warning: Environmental Temperature -40°C.]

[Condition: Hypothermia Imminent. Prana Shroud must be adjusted to 'Heat-Retention' mode.]

Rudra's breath came out in a thick white cloud. "From a furnace... to a freezer."

Ananya was shivering violently. Her fire-based Prana was reacting poorly to the sudden drop. She snapped her fingers, but only a small, flickering spark appeared before the wind snuffed it out.

"This floor... it's a natural counter to my sect," Ananya hissed, her teeth chattering. "The air is so thin and cold that it's hard to sustain a flame."

Rudra stepped forward, his Wind-Prana swirling around them. Instead of a cooling breeze, he focused on friction, spinning the air at high speeds to generate a small amount of warmth. "Stay close. We can't fight the floor and the monsters at the same time."

The Shadow in the Snow

As they began to navigate the slippery ledge, Rudra's Resonance Map pulsed.

[Detection: Multiple life-forms moving within the blizzard.]

[Pattern: Pack Hunting.]

"We aren't alone," Rudra whispered, his hand on the Firangi.

Out of the white fog, a pair of glowing blue eyes appeared. Then another. And another. These weren't stone or fire creatures. They were Hima-Vyakra—Frost Tigers. Their fur was made of jagged icicles, and their breath was a freezing mist that could turn a man into a statue in seconds.

The lead tiger let out a low growl that sounded like cracking ice.

"Ananya, can you give me a flare?" Rudra asked, his eyes tracking the movement in the snow.

"I can't maintain a big fire," she panted, focusing her energy. "But I can give you one big burst!"

She clapped her hands together, and a sphere of concentrated heat erupted between them, acting like a flashbang in the dark. The Frost Tigers recoiled, blinded by the sudden light.

"Go!" she yelled.

Rudra launched himself into the blizzard. At Level 4, his speed was terrifying. He moved like a ghost through the snow, his blade a silver streak. He didn't aim for the body; he aimed for the throat.

"Vayu-Siddhi: Winter's End!"

He combined his wind with the freezing air, turning the blizzard's own force against the tigers. His blade sliced through the ice-fur of the first beast, shattering it like glass.

[Experience Gained: Level 4 progress 12%]

But as the first tiger fell, the ground beneath them began to tremble. A massive shadow loomed over the ledge—a beast much larger than the tigers.

"Rudra, look out!" Ananya screamed.

A giant frost-covered club smashed into the ledge, sending shards of ice flying everywhere. Standing there was a Frost Giant, its skin the color of deep-sea ice, staring at them with a hunger that had lasted for centuries.

The Seventh Floor wasn't just a threshold. It was a graveyard.
