He told Varn three things.
That he had been inside the null zone. That he had cracked the ash plates. That he had retreated because he needed more time.
Varn listened to all three without interrupting and then was quiet for long enough that the common room's ambient noise filled the space between them. Then he said: "You went inside it."
"Yes."
"And came back."
"Yes."
Varn looked at his water container and turned it slowly on the table. "In six years," he said, "nobody has confirmed what the Regent looks like. Every survivor account stops at the null zone boundary." He looked up. "You are the first person to have seen it and be sitting here."
Kael did not say anything to that.
"What does it look like," Varn said.
Kael described it. The ash plates, the thermal vacuum mechanism, the circular patrol pattern, the structural weak point the Gust Strike redirect had exposed. Varn listened with the focused attention of someone who understood the operational significance of each detail and was cataloguing rather than reacting.
When Kael finished Varn sat back. "That changes the contract," he said. "The guild regional office has been sitting on that posting for six years because nobody has actionable intelligence. What you just described is actionable." He paused. "They will want to talk to you."
"I know," Kael said. "Not yet."
Varn looked at him. "You are going back."
"In eighteen days."
Varn looked at the eastern window. Something in his expression shifted, the particular recalibration of someone who had been treating a situation as concerning and was updating toward something else. He picked up his water and finished it and set the container down precisely. "The fifth zone outer ring," he said, "is not going to hold my attention the way it used to."
Kael looked at him.
"I am not asking to come with you," Varn said immediately. "I know the gap. I watched you come back from the interior with 1,280 HP of damage and I know what my HP pool looks like." He paused. "I am just saying the context has changed."
Kael nodded once and finished his meal and went upstairs.
The eighteen days had a structure.
Mornings in the sixth zone outer ring, pushing the level counter with the efficiency of someone who had stopped thinking of the outer ring as a challenge and started thinking of it as infrastructure. VP generation, Void Pool charging, the occasional new sub-skill forming when a fight produced the right conditions.
Level 77. Level 81. Level 84. Level 88.
Each level arriving with the five stat points he allocated the same way he had been allocating since level 10, two into Intelligence, two into Agility, one into Perception, the numbers climbing in a column that no Record display in Irongate would recognise as belonging to a Ranked-tier token.
Afternoons on potions. The method was faster now, the ingredient sourcing refined to a circuit of three suppliers in Irongate's market who did not know what they were selling and charged accordingly. He was producing three to four batches per afternoon session, each batch compounding for several hours before fusion, the combined return values climbing as he invested heavier into each ingredient set.
The grade distribution of his output had shifted again. Rare was now the floor on low rolls. Epic was the median. On day seven he produced his first Legendary potion from a batch with a roll of 83 and on day eleven he produced a second.
[Fusion roll: 83]
[Post-multiplier value: 147,340,220 VP]
[Fusion complete.]
[Void Resonance Draught — Legendary]
[Effect: Synchronises the user's void attribute with ambient void energy in the environment. Void Pool passive charge rate increases by 400% for 30 minutes. Core Surge cooldown reduced to 8 minutes for duration.]
He looked at Core Surge cooldown reduced to 8 minutes. The standard cooldown was 30 minutes. Against the Ashen Regent the first engagement had lasted two exchanges before he retreated, Core Surge used once and expended before the second exchange. An 8-minute cooldown meant Core Surge was available again before the Ashen Veil's fifteen-minute window expired.
He set the Void Resonance Draught beside the Ashen Veil and the rebuilt Voidform Elixir stock he was developing and did not touch either of them.
On day eleven a Fire sub-skill formed mid-fight that stopped him moving for a full three seconds while he read the entry.
[Cinder Burst (A) — Proficiency 1]
[A spherical release of compressed thermal energy from the user's body. At A-grade, burst radius scales with Fire affinity output and covers up to 15 metres from the user's position. Deals significant damage to anything within the burst radius. Does not distinguish between targets. Cooldown: 45 seconds.]
A-grade on formation. He had no prior reference point for what that meant in terms of output against a target at the Regent's level but the description, spherical, 15 metre radius, significant damage, no target discrimination, had an obvious application in a fight against something whose structural weak point was in its ash plate layer and whose speed was the primary threat variable.
He invested 800,000 VP into Cinder Burst before he had finished reading.
On day fourteen Combustion crossed the SSS threshold.
He was in the outer ring when the Compounding Lens notification appeared unprompted.
[Combustion (SS) — Return value: 8,847,330,000 VP]
[SSS threshold exceeded.]
[Maximum achievable grade at withdrawal: SSS]
[Note: Current return value produces significant grade overshoot above SSS threshold. Projected grade jump: SS to SSS with substantial power surplus.]
He looked at that notification for a long moment. Eight billion VP of return value. The SSS threshold was 8,000,000 VP. He had 8,847,000,000 VP. He had overshot the SSS threshold by a factor of over a thousand.
He did not withdraw it. He wanted to understand what a thousand-times overshoot of a grade threshold produced before he committed to the withdrawal. The Compounding Lens said SSS was the maximum achievable grade but the surplus was a number he had never seen before on a withdrawal projection.
He pulled up the Grade Insight on Combustion.
[Combustion (SS) — Grade jump thresholds:]
[SS to SSS: 8,000,000 VP — exceeded]
[SSS to Sovereign-grade (Skill): 50,000,000,000,000 VP — not met]
[Maximum achievable grade: SSS]
[Note: Return value surplus above grade threshold contributes to power enhancement within grade. Surplus of 8,839,330,000 VP above SSS threshold will produce exceptional power enhancement beyond standard SSS output.]
He read the Sovereign-grade threshold. Fifty trillion VP. He looked at Heat Control's current return value of approximately 200 billion at the rates it had been running. Fifty trillion was two hundred and fifty times further than he currently was on his fastest compounding investment.
He filed it as a number that existed and moved on.
He confirmed the Combustion withdrawal.
[Withdraw investment from: Combustion (SS) — Proficiency 6]
[Current return value: 8,847,330,000 VP]
[Upgrade threshold analysis:]
[SS to SSS: 8,000,000 VP — exceeded by 8,839,330,000 VP]
[Maximum achievable grade: SSS]
[Projected grade: SSS]
[Power increase: exceptional — surplus return value contributes to output enhancement beyond standard SSS baseline]
[Proficiency increase: +3 (new proficiency: 9)]
[Sub-skill of Fire Affinity (S) — resonance multiplier update pending]
[Note: SSS sub-skill of S affinity. Resonance pressure on affinity ceiling intensifies. Ceiling elevation rate: accelerating.]
[Confirm withdrawal?]
He confirmed it.
The change arrived differently from the Heat Control SSS withdrawal, which had been an expansion of awareness. This was a concentration, Combustion's focal point mechanic pressing deeper and harder than it had at SS-grade in the same way a blade sharpened past a previous edge level produced a categorically different cut rather than just a better version of the same one.
[Combustion (SSS) — Proficiency 9]
[Hyper-focused thermal discharge at a singular point. At SSS-grade, discharge operates at the sub-material level, interacting with the structural cohesion of the target rather than its surface. Penetration is not dependent on material grade or tier. Output scales with Fire affinity resonance and void attribute interaction.]
[Sub-skill of Fire Affinity (S) — resonance multiplier: 1.6]
[Note: SSS sub-skill. Resonance pressure on Fire Affinity (S) ceiling critical. Affinity grade elevation imminent.]
[Sub-skills available:]
[Proficiency 9: Structural Fracture — active]
[Proficiency 10: Core Breach — locked]
He read the resonance multiplier. 1.6. Heat Control SSS had pushed it to above 1.0. Combustion SSS had pushed it to 1.6. The note said affinity grade elevation was imminent.
He looked at the Fire Affinity entry.
[Elemental Affinity: Fire (S)]
[Resonance pressure from sub-skills: critical]
[Grade elevation status: pending threshold]
He invested 5,000,000 VP into Combustion immediately and watched the bar appear.
Then he looked at the eighteen-day count.
Day fourteen. Four days remaining.
He had Combustion SSS at proficiency 9. He had Cinder Burst A-rank compounding for three days. He had a Void Resonance Draught that cut Core Surge cooldown to 8 minutes. He had an Ashen Veil and a rebuilt Voidform Elixir stack.
He also had a Fire affinity that was apparently about to change grades.
He sat against a rock formation in the sixth zone outer ring and watched the resonance pressure indicator on the Fire affinity entry pulse twice and then go still.
Then the Record updated without a withdrawal prompt, without a notification, without anything he had triggered.
[Elemental Affinity: Fire (S) — Grade elevated.]
[Elemental Affinity: Fire (SS)]
[Note: Affinity grade elevation driven by cumulative resonance pressure from SSS-grade sub-skills. Resonance multiplier recalculated. All Fire sub-skill outputs updated.]
[New resonance multiplier applied to all Fire sub-skills: 2.4]
He looked at that for a long time.
His affinity had upgraded on its own. Not through a withdrawal or a fusion or any deliberate action. The sub-skills had pushed against the affinity ceiling hard enough and long enough that the ceiling had risen. The resonance multiplier on every Fire sub-skill had jumped from its previous value to 2.4, which meant Heat Control SSS, Combustion SSS, Thermal Lance, Char Field and Cinder Burst were all running at 2.4 times their base output simultaneously.
He thought about what Combustion SSS at proficiency 9 at a 2.4 resonance multiplier did to a target whose structural weak point he had already located and cracked in a previous engagement.
Four more days.
He stood up and went back to work.
On the eighteenth day he came downstairs with six potions and the Ashveil Blade and the egg warm against his back and Varn was in the common room and said nothing this time.
Just looked at him.
Kael looked back.
"Same offer," Varn said. "If you are not back by nightfall."
"I will be back," Kael said.
It was the first time he had said that instead of leaving the contingency plan.
Varn looked at him for a moment with the expression that had been developing since the first conversation and had arrived somewhere new. He nodded once.
Kael went out the door and turned east and did not look back.
