Chapter 6 - Chapter 6: The First Brick

"So, Mr. Ghost. You say you want to buy my Bank?" Alice Cohen asked the unseen voice speaking through the phone resting on the polished surface of her desk.

The office still carried the exhaustion of the previous night. The cold coffee and untouched paperwork. Stress was still lingering like smoke after a fire. Across from her sat Vince. He was calm, silent and observant. And somewhere far away, inside a quiet bedroom deep within the Stanley Estate, Alfred sat at the edge of his desk, fingers folded together, eyes steady. For him this was the moment to shine, this was not trading or investing and it definitely wasn't speculation. If he managed to aquire this bank, his first empire's first cornerstone will be built.

"Ms. Cohen," Alfred began, his voice calm and respectful, "I don't just want to buy your bank. I want to be its custodian. I've looked at the financials, the structure and I've also seen the reports. But more importantly, I've seen the legacy, the sweat your predecessors put in building a solid foundation. I know what this Bank means to your family."

Alice leaned back slowly.

"Oh do you now!," she asked.

There was skepticism in her tone, but also curiosity. On the other end of the phone Alfred leaned forward slightly placing both hands on his desk. This wasn't numbers or markets anymore was someone else's legacy so he had to trade carefully.

"I see a bank with incredible bones Ms. Cohen. A top-tier Investment Firm that is the envy most banks above this one. A loyal, passionate employee base that has stuck with this institution through thick and thin. You haven't just kept this place in business and alive Ms. Cohen, instead you've preserved its soul."

Silence followed, then something changed. Alice's shoulders relaxed slightly and her expression softened. For the first time since this crisis began someone wasn't treating her bank like prey. A flicker of surprise and gratitude crossed her face. She exchanged a glance with Vince who said nothing but his eyes betrayed him. This man understood value.

"That's kind of you to say, Mr. Ghost," Alice said quietly. "But as you know kind words don't keep a bus running. Let's not beat around the bush here. Since I seem to be at my limit, I have an approximate value. For the Bank, the building we operate from, the employees, and all associated assets including the investment firm you praised a while ago, I would say the price north of 2 billion dollars is appropriate enough. "

Vince nodded slowly, this exactly what they predicted and discussed with Alfred the day before. Inside the Stanley Estate, Alfred exhaled slowly. The market price was fair but it was also high and again fairness did not build empires, negotiations did.

"It's a fair valuation," Alfred conceded. "On paper I must say though. We both know the reality is more complex."

Alice's fingers tightened slightly around her chair armrest.

"There's outstanding debt that needs to be serviced," Alfred continued calmly. "We might have to relocate and this building will be used as a branch office. While functional, the bank needs significant investment to stop our clients from being poached by other financial institutions. There are employee contracts that will need renegotiating soon." His tone sharpened slightly. "Your asking price Ms. Cohen is for the house, but it does not account for the fact that your roof is leaking."

The words landed cleanly and directly without sounding cruel but also without mercy. Alice looked down, she already knew this was to used against her in a negotiation.

"I'm a desperate woman right now, Mr. Ghost," she admitted quietly. "I don't have the energy or the funds for rejuvenation. So what are you proposing?"

Alfred spoke immediately , "I'm proposing a fresh start." His voice strengthened. "1 billion dollars up front. You become my financial executive and as tribute to your family's legacy, I will only take 92% of your company and you remain with the other 8% but of course with an option that I be first to be offered these shares should you ever decide to sell. What say you to my offer?"

Alice froze, her breath caught. This wasn't an offer, it was a complete takeover. Restructuring, new ownership with all the control and authority. And yet respect remained intact. They had given her a seat on the table, she still had dignity, a purpose and an identity. Even though Alice still shook her head slowly.

"No," she said quietly. Vince's eyebrow lifted slightly, Alice continued.

"Mr. Ghost… if I accept one billion, the personal loans I took to try and stabilize my company alone will swallow three quarters of it immediately. I won't even have enough money left to stabilize my own personal life. I have sold everything and living with my aunt, i cant even afford a house. If this is your offer I would rather sink with my ship as its captain."

Alfred listened carefully. Alice wasn't negotiating emotionally but rather she was negotiating intelligently and that meant she was worth keeping.

"What number did you have in mind?" Alfred asked calmly.

Alice hesitated for a bit then answered honestly, "1.8 billion."

Vince leaned forward slightly, Alfred remained silent. He was calculating and processing while rebalancing leverage versus loyalty. Then he spoke again,

"1.3 billion."

Alice inhaled slowly, "1.7 billion."

Silence filled the office, Vince watched both sides carefully. Two leaders were testing weight, balance and intent. Then Alfred spoke one final time."1.5 billion."

Silence followed again, then "You have yourself a deal."

Alice closed her eyes briefly, relief washed over her. She was exhaustion. Alice release pent up breath she didn't know she had. Her bank would live, she nolonger owner it entirely but her father and grandfather's legacy would live.

Vince stood up immediately after the call ended, professional and prepared. "Excellent," he said calmly. He tapped his tablet once and the temporary legal consultant he had retained stepped into the office within seconds. After that contracts were drafted, equity distributions were finalized. Emergency restructuring authority was assigned and Alice's executive appointment was confirmed while ownership transition was protected.

Alice read everything carefully. Every clause, term and every line. Then she signed. The stylus clicked softly against the tablet surface. A quiet sound that had shifted history had. Since everything was being done virtually, Alfred also had his tablet in hand in his room and when the contract arrived with Alice's signature, Alfred read through it and signed then transmitted the finalized document instantly to a secure and encrypted storage. It was done. Cohen Holdings & Investment Bank now belonged to Alfred. Vince stood up, collected his tablet, adjusted his coat. Then smiled slightly.

"Welcome to the family Alice," he said calmly, "A.G.L Consortium will take care of everyone."

Alice blinked, confusion was evident on her face and her brow furrowed. She looked up then asked almost subconsciously, "Ummmm Mr. Vince! Isn't the company called Ghost Holdings?'

Vince paused at the doorway, smiled faintly. "Oh no Alice," he said calmly, "Ghost isn't a company, It's a person." His voice lowered slightly, " A.G.L Consortium and you happen to be the first brick."

Alice stared at Vince, she was speechless. After a few seconds she asked carefully, "Can I meet this Ghost person then?"

Vince smiled again, but this it was quiet smile. The kind that carried secrets.

"Unless you kill someone then maybe," he said lightly, " If not the nobody ever sees the Ghost. That's why he is a Ghost." Vince stepped into the hallway. He paused briefly, turned back slightly and spoke. "If you need anything, you contact me." His voice became steady again, "I'm his eyes and ears." Then he left.

Alice remained seated, staring at the copy of the signed contract now glowing softly on her tablet screen. 'First brick, Consortium, Ghost.' These words kept echoing in her mind. Something far bigger than a rescue had just begun. And far away inside the Stanley Mansion, Alfred exhaled slowly and he smiled. His first structure had been placed into the world. The beating heart of his soon to be Empire, A.G.L Private Bank.
