Riko pressed her small body tight against the cold wall, hands trembling so violently she could barely keep them still. The front door downstairs creaked open with slow, deliberate menace. Heavy footsteps echoed through the silent house, each one landing like a hammer on her chest.
"Nii-chan…" she whispered, the words barely a breath.
Panic surged through her like wildfire. She dashed up the stairs like a frightened shadow—silent, desperate—then slipped into Kaiya's room. Without thinking, she dropped to the floor and crawled under his bed, curling into the tightest ball her small frame could manage. Her heart hammered so loudly she was certain the intruder could hear it from downstairs.
The footsteps grew closer, heavy and unhurried, climbing the stairs with terrifying patience.
---
Meanwhile, at Mizukiri High School, Kaiya, Yui, Ren, and Marata sprinted down the dark hallway of Building A. Their panicked breathing mingled with the guttural, unnatural snarls echoing behind them.
Marata stumbled, his legs giving out beneath him.
"Marata! Move!" Ren shouted.
It was too late.
One of the monsters lunged forward with horrifying speed. Marata's scream tore through the air as the creature ripped his body apart right in front of them. Hot blood sprayed across the walls in a gruesome arc.
Ren froze on the floor, eyes wide with raw horror.
"MOVE! NOW!" Kaiya yelled, grabbing Ren by the arm and dragging him roughly back to his feet.
Yui, Ren, and Kaiya kept running, hearts slamming against their ribs, the nightmare chasing them without mercy through the pitch-black corridors.
---
On Floor B of the same building, Mio and Hikaru Nakayama had hidden in a narrow side hallway, desperately trying to catch their breath.
"I think we… lost it…" Nakayama panted, leaning against the wall.
"What the fuck was that?" Mio gasped, fear choking her voice.
Nakayama pulled her close for a moment, steadying her trembling shoulders. Then the creature appeared behind them without warning, its distorted form materializing from the shadows like smoke.
"Get down!" Nakayama shouted, shoving Mio out of the way.
The monster's claws slashed across his shoulder, leaving a deep, bleeding gash. Not fatal, but painful enough to make him stagger.
Mio rushed to help him up.
Suddenly, Kaiya, Yui, and Ren burst into view at the far end of the hallway.
---
Kaiya didn't hesitate. He snatched a fire extinguisher from the wall and hurled it at the monster. The heavy metal cylinder smashed into its distorted body, buying them precious seconds.
Ren followed his lead, throwing another extinguisher with all his strength.
The distraction gave Mio and Nakayama enough time to scramble over and join the group.
But the horror wasn't over.
The two monsters chasing Kaiya's group merged with the ones pursuing Mio and Nakayama. Their bodies twisted and fused with wet, sickening sounds into one massive, grotesque abomination. Its bloodied, distorted form towered over the terrified students, limbs writhing like living shadows.
"The fuck!" Kaiya breathed.
Mio and Nakayama pressed close to the others, eyes wide with terror.
---
The monstrosity roared, a sound that vibrated through bone and glass, and began smashing through doors and walls, destroying everything in its path as it chased them across the school grounds. The kids finally burst into the open courtyard and spotted the teachers' room in Building C.
They sprinted inside and frantically barricaded the door with desks, chairs, filing cabinets—anything they could move. For six long, tense hours they hid there in suffocating darkness and silence.
It was now 12:45 AM—four days after the first disappearance.
The room was pitch black and deathly quiet… for now.
---
Kaiya suddenly remembered his sister. He pulled out his phone with shaking hands and dialed.
"Riko! Are you okay?"
Riko's voice came back trembling from under the bed. "Someone's in the house…"
Kaiya's blood ran cold. "What… did you see them?"
"I ran upstairs to hide."
"Don't move. Stay quiet. Don't be scared. We'll come for you."
The group exchanged grim, determined looks. They knew they had to act.
---
At 1:00 AM, Kaiya stood up. "We have to move now."
Ren looked at him like he was insane. "You want us to get killed? You saw what they did to Marata. I know I didn't like him, but that was messed up!" He dropped to his knees, hands clutching his head. "We're going to die… I have a lot to live for. I'm still a virgin!"
Mio finally snapped. "Finally admits it."
"Shut up already!" Yui hissed. "You want us to get killed?"
Nakayama, still bleeding from his shoulder, frowned. "What is that thing anyway?"
Kaiya and Ren finally noticed him properly.
"WHAT THE FUCK IS HE DOING HERE?!" they both blurted at the same time.
Yui rolled her eyes. "Now you're seeing him seriously?"
"Hi there, I'm Nakayama Hikaru. Nice to meet—" Nakayama started politely.
Ren and Kaiya whispered to each other, completely ignoring him.
*Harsh,* Nakayama thought.
"Guys, stop!" Mio cut in. "He's bleeding. He needs help."
She grabbed the first-aid kit from the wall and began tending to Nakayama's wound with surprisingly steady hands.
Kaiya took a deep breath. "Listen, guys. I have a plan. We distract it… by burning Building A. That should give us a clear path out."
Yui stared at him. "That's insane—there's a lot of chemicals in there that could cause a massive explosion!"
"It's the only way!" Kaiya insisted.
They moved quickly. Nakayama and Ren snuck into the school storeroom and poured trails of gasoline leading straight to the chemistry lab, where volatile chemicals were stored.
When everything was set, Kaiya gave the signal.
"Light it."
Flames roared to life. Thick black smoke billowed upward. The monster turned, distracted by the growing inferno.
One by one, the group slipped out of the school grounds—everyone except Yui.
She had doubled back, phone in hand, determined to take a picture of the burning monster as proof.
"Yui!" Kaiya shouted.
He sprinted back toward her without hesitation.
---
Kaiya found Yui cornered in a smoke-filled corridor. He grabbed her hand tightly.
"Come on!"
They ran together as the fire raged behind them. Building A suddenly erupted in a deafening explosion, engulfing the massive monster in roaring flames.
"You'll pay for this, you foolish child…" the creature snarled, its voice distorted and hateful, echoing through the collapsing halls.
Kaiya didn't stop. He hoisted Yui onto his shoulders and carried her through the spreading fire, muscles burning with effort as smoke stung his eyes and lungs.
"You'll pay… pay…" the monster's voice grew weaker as the flames consumed it completely.
The building collapsed in a final, thunderous explosion, ending the nightmare.
The group burst out of the school grounds, hearts pounding and lungs scorched by smoke, as flames lit up the night sky behind them like a funeral pyre.
---
They raced back to Kaiya's house and rushed inside, the front door still ajar.
"Riko!" Kaiya called desperately.
They found her safe, still curled under his bed, small body shaking but unharmed. When she saw her brother, her eyes filled with tears of relief.
"You're okay," Kaiya said softly, pulling her into a tight hug. "That's all that matters."
The entire group collapsed onto the floor and couch, exhausted, terrified, and alive—for now.
