I sobbed uncontrollably the instant Courtney's footsteps vanished completely. I didn't even try to wipe the tears pouring hot and fast down my face, my legs carrying me unsteadily through the halls—only one thought burning through all the pain: find Draven.
I heard the soft, unmistakable sound of pages turning before I even stepped inside. There he was, broad and sturdy, relaxed deep in his chair with that heavy black book open across his lap. The moment his eyes met mine, he snapped it shut hard and fast.
I stood there shrinking small, raw grief wrapping tight around me, just staring up at him through blurred, tear-filled eyes.
Slowly he rose to his full height, every movement heavy and deliberate. His deep, rumbling voice wrapped around me instantly:
