Chapter 43 - The Beauty Effect and An After-School Basketball Duel

Zhao Qian let out a long breath, a look of profound relief washing over her face—Lin Ruofei's suggestion had been nothing short of perfect.

Sure enough, there is a phenomenon known as the beauty effect. Lin Ruofei was unequivocally a beauty of school belle caliber, and from the very moment she had stepped into the classroom, she had no doubt become a goddess in the eyes of the vast majority of the male students.

"I agree with Student Lin Ruofei's proposal!" An excitable voice rang out, coming from a short-statured boy who stared at Lin Ruofei with rapt adoration as he spoke. Lin Ruofei turned her head, smiled at the boy, and gave a soft nod. In an instant, the boy's face flushed bright scarlet, beside himself with elation that the school's most beautiful girl had just smiled at him.

With the first person having broken the ice, a chorus of voices immediately erupted through the classroom, all shouting their agreement with Student Lin's proposal.

At the sight of this turn of events, Liu Jun's face turned an ugly shade of green. Beside him, the tall, strapping Zhang Chengyi wore a thunderous expression, and had they not been in the middle of class, he would likely have lunged at Fang Yu right then and there.

"Excellent." Zhao Qian nodded, another wave of relief flooding through her. Her gaze then sharpened as she fixed it on Liu Jun. "Liu Jun, do you have any further objections?"

"None." Liu Jun shook his head, then shifted his gaze to Fang Yu. Catching the amused, mocking smirk on the boy's face, he slammed back down into his seat, seething inwardly: You little bastard, I won't forget this.

"Fang Yu, do a good job, and don't let our trust in you go to waste." With those final words, Zhao Qian turned and strode straight out of the classroom.

"Hey, thanks for that." Fang Yu turned to Lin Ruofei with a grin.

"Don't mention it. I just can't stand guys who think they're God's gift to women." Lin Ruofei laughed, deliberately raising her voice so that Liu Jun, not far away, heard every word, his jaw clenching with unbridled rage.

"But I think I'm pretty handsome too." Fang Yu grinned.

"Well, even if I find you a little annoying too, at least we're already acquainted." Lin Ruofei snickered, then turned and winked at Yan Ting, who sat a short distance away.

"Fair enough." Fang Yu gave a faint shrug, then turned to Yan Ting and flashed her a broad grin, before slumping back over his desk and promptly falling back into a deep, peaceful sleep.

"What a guy. Gets exactly what he wants and still acts like it's no big deal." Yan Ting curled her lip, her face etched with disdain. What on earth was Lin Niu thinking, sticking up for this guy?

"Xiao Ting, let it go. We'll have plenty of chances to mess with him later. Let him gloat for now." Xiao Qin patted Yan Ting on the back with a smile.

"I guess that's all we can do." Yan Ting said no more, bowing her head and opening her textbook.

The end of class bell rang soon after, and Fang Yu stirred awake from his nap.

"Well, well, if it isn't our class president. We've got a few things we'd like to ask you about." A voice thick with mocking amusement cut through the air.

"Oh? What's on your mind?" Fang Yu's eyes narrowed as he looked up at Liu Jun and Zhang Chengyi, who had appeared at his desk.

"Tell us, Class President Fang—do you know how to play basketball?" The nearly 1.9-meter-tall Zhang Chengyi asked, a sneering smirk on his face.

"I know a thing or two about it." Fang Yu nodded with a smile, then rose to his feet. Next to the towering Zhang Chengyi, the 1.7-meter-tall Fang Yu looked like a child beside a grown man.

"Perfect. We've got nothing to do after school anyway—how about a game of 3-on-3 basketball?" Zhang Chengyi sneered.

"Naturally, if you don't have the guts, we won't hold it against you." Liu Jun chimed in.
