Chapter 9 - Fragile Memories..

Kang starts heading back toward the party. He begins to re-enter the venue. Just then, Park approaches from the front and stops him. Park: "Wait, Kang—don't go inside." Kang: "Why? What's the matter?" Park: "Nothing. I just want to introduce you to someone." Kang: "To whom? And whoever it is, I'm not in the mood to meet anyone right now. Let me go. Get out of my way." (Kang brushes past him.) Park: "I figured Kang wouldn't listen. If he sees them, he'll say something in anger, and it will cause a scene at the party. Kang didn't even want to come here in the first place, all because of them. I have to go stop him." Cut

. (Inside the party venue, Kang begins looking for the Chairman. Then he spots the Chairman from behind, talking to a woman, and starts walking toward them.) Kang: "Dad." Chairman: (Startled) "Kang? Is that you?" Kang: "Who were you talking to?" (The woman steps forward and stands right in front of Kang. Kang looks at her; he is filled with rage and turns to leave.) Woman: "Kang, wait! Where are you going? Come here, son. Won't you greet me? It's been so many years since we last met, my son." Kang: (Stopping and glaring at her angrily) "Stop calling me your son." Mrs. Kang: (Looking at Kang with deep despair in her eyes) "Why are you speaking like this? I am your mother." (Just then, Park arrives and reaches Kang's side.) Park: (Approaching Kang) "Calm down. Kang, the party is in full swing. No one should find out about this. So, just calm down." Kang: "So *this* is the reason you were trying to stop me from coming here." But now, I feel that I *should* have stopped myself. Well, let's go now. I don't want to stay here. (The Chairman tries to stop Mrs. Kang, but she begins to move toward Mr. Kang.) Mrs. Kang: (Approaching Kang and taking his hand) Wait, Kang... You... Kang: (Pulling his hand away) I have nothing to say to you. (He then turns and walks away.) Chairman: Son, wait! Park: Chairman, don't worry; I'll handle this. (Park follows after Kang.) Chairman: Are you satisfied now? Mrs. Kang: What are you talking about? Chairman: I told you—I threw this party for Kang, and I didn't want to see you here. Yet, you came anyway. Mrs. Kang: He is my son! He has returned after so many years; shouldn't I be allowed to see him? And I am his biological mother. Even if he hates me, everything I did for him... it was all for his own good. Chairman: Really? Do you truly believe that everything you did for him was right? Mrs. Kang: Yes. And all I ever wanted was for him to succeed. ...And look at him now—look at the heights he has reached. He just needs to forget his past and move forward. He should find a partner and make a fresh start with her.

Chairman: You think he'll forget everything? Well, how would you know what he actually wanted? Anyway, I have no desire to speak with you, so I'm leaving. Mrs. Kang: Yes, go. I have no desire to speak with you either. You will never understand me.

[Cut] (On the balcony of the Kang Party Hall, Kang stands seething with rage, gripping the railing tightly.) Kang: (Angrily slamming his hand against the railing) Why did she come here? What does she want? Do I have to do exactly what she says every single time? She has always forced me to do whatever *she* wanted. Because of her, I lost someone I held very dear—Hanu.

[Flashback] (Kang's Childhood: On a hillside, young Kang is weeping and lashing out at his mother.) Kang: (Sobbing) *Hiccup*... Why did you do that? Why did you hurt her? Why? *Hiccup*... You're a terrible person! You didn't like her, so you pushed her! Mrs. Kang: (Shaking Kang) You've got it all wrong! I didn't push her (Just then, Park arrives and approaches Kang; Kang quickly tries to hide his tears.) Park: Kang? So this is where you were? I couldn't find you anywhere. ...But never mind all that. The reason I stopped you earlier was that *she* had arrived. I figured if you saw her, you'd fly into a rage. Kang: But why didn't you tell me she was here? Park: I know how much you loathe her, so why would I bring up her name in front of you? Kang: Right... Well, let it go. (Kang looks up at the sky, while Lee and Wan are escorting eun toward their car. From above, Kang and Park watch the whole scene unfold.)

[Cut] Lee: eun, come on, get in the car. eun: No... I want to drink more! Won: Honestly, this girl—just sit down quietly! eun: *Aaaah!* Lee: Quiet! (Lee then [forcibly] lifts eun...) ...up and seats her in the front seat of the car. Seeing this, Kang becomes slightly agitated and clenches his fists. Park: Why is eun acting like this? It looks like she's had a little too much to drink. She looks so cute when she's been drinking. Kang: (Glares angrily at Park) Park: What's the matter? Kang: Nothing. (In a low voice) This, too... Lee: Won, get in the car; let's go. Won: Alright. (She gets into the car, and they drive away.) Park: Come on, let's head inside now. (Looking at Kang) What happened?Yeah, I get it. I know you don't want to go in. Kang: It's nothing like that. I'm coming; you go on ahead. Park: Alright. I'm going in; make sure you follow. Kang: Yeah. (Park goes inside.) Kang: Why do I feel this way whenever I look at Eun? You don't need to do this, Kang. (To himself) Kang, she isn't *your* Hanu; you don't need to fall in love with anyone. She's just a crazy girl, and you don't like her—not one bit. (Kang then heads inside, where the party is in full swing.) (The party continues late into the night.) Scene...
