I arrived at seven twenty-eight.

Not early — arriving early to events of this nature was the behavior of men who needed the psychological advantage of already being present when others arrived, the territorial posturing of someone for whom presence was not yet a given. Not late — arriving late was the behavior of men who needed the room to notice the arrival, who required the entrance, the pause, the turned heads. Both were performances of insecurity in different registers, and I had no use for either.

Seven twenty-eight. The Cavendish Club's entrance was moving at the correct pace — guests arriving in the continuous, unhurried stream of an event that had been correctly timed, the staff managing coats and names with the invisible efficiency that the Cavendish maintained as a matter of institutional pride. The club itself was one of the older private establishments on the East Side — not the oldest, but among the most considered, the kind of place that had survived a century of Manhattan's perpetual reinvention by the simple method of refusing to participate in it. The walls were original paneling. The floors were original floors. The portraits in the entrance corridor were of men who had been dead for decades and were not apologizing for it.

I had been a member for eleven years. I had eaten here perhaps forty times. I knew the layout the way I knew all spaces I occupied regularly — completely, without effort, with the kind of structural familiarity that freed the mind for more demanding work.

Marcus took the car. I handed my coat to a staff member whose name I knew — Carlton, fifteen years at the Cavendish, three children, a preference for Sundays off that I had arranged to accommodate the last time I'd requested his personal attention for an event — and moved into the main corridor.

The Fordham Group dinner occupied the Cavendish's east wing — three connected rooms that flowed into each other in the way the club's architecture was designed to encourage, the progressive intimacy of spaces that began formal and became, by the third room, something closer to private. The dining room itself was set for sixty. The Fordham Group was a private equity firm of the old school variety — not old money in the Morgan sense, but established enough to have stopped being aggressive about it, which was the closest new money ever got to the quality of ease that old money produced.

Sixty people. The usual configuration of a Fordham dinner — senior partners, a selection of their highest-value portfolio CEOs, a deliberately curated scattering of people from adjacent worlds. Finance, technology, legal, occasionally medicine. And this year, apparently, fashion.

I accepted a drink from a passing server — water, as always before dinner, before the evening had given me a full read of its requirements — and moved through the first room with the particular quality of attention I gave all environments: ambient, total, appearing to be nothing more than a man comfortable in a familiar setting.

She was not yet there.

I had known she was not yet there from the moment I entered the room. Not because I was watching the entrance — I was not watching the entrance — but because a room that contained Isabella Reyes had a different quality than a room that didn't, and this room didn't yet, and I had known it immediately the way you knew certain things immediately when you had developed the correct sensitivity to them.

That sensitivity was, I noted with the flat precision I applied to uncomfortable facts, a new development. Specific to her. I had not previously possessed a sensitivity to the presence or absence of any particular individual in any particular room. I had possessed, always, a general sensitivity to rooms — to their dynamics, their power configurations, their hidden currents — but not this. I filed it. I did not interpret it. Interpretation was for later, or possibly for never, depending on what the next thirty days produced.

The Fordham dinner's first room was cocktails and conversation — standing, fluid, the social phase of the evening that served the purpose of allowing the room's various hierarchies to establish themselves before everyone was committed to a fixed seat. I moved through it with the efficiency of someone conducting a specific inventory. Henrik Malone from Fordham himself — I exchanged the three sentences that the relationship required and extracted from them the information that Fordham's Q2 position in the Sato Group was shakier than the last report had suggested, which I noted without comment. Avery Walsh from the Cavendish's legal representation — two sentences, a confirmed meeting for next week. James Rourke, whom I hadn't seen since the Singapore conversation last year — longer, because Rourke was genuinely useful and the conversation had substance.

Throughout all of it, the entrance was at my left shoulder at a distance of approximately forty feet, and I was not watching it.

At seven forty-one, the quality of the room changed.

I did not look up immediately. I continued the sentence I was in the middle of saying to Rourke — something about the regulatory environment in Southeast Asia, a point that deserved its full completion — and I finished it, and Rourke responded, and I processed Rourke's response with the appropriate portion of my attention.

The rest of my attention had already found her.

She was at the entrance, handing her coat — a long camel coat, which was all I clocked before it was taken — to the staff. She was speaking to Carlton with the easy, genuine warmth she deployed in social environments, and Carlton, who had worked at the Cavendish for fifteen years and maintained the professional impenetrability of long-term hospitality staff, was smiling. Actually smiling. The kind of smile that came from something landing as real rather than performed.

She was in burgundy tonight.

Not navy. The specific instruction I had sent — wear something that isn't navy — had been received and acted on, and the fact of its being acted on sat in my chest with the quiet, certain weight of a piece of information I would need to handle carefully.

The dress was silk, I thought — or something with silk's behavior, the way it moved with her rather than around her. Floor-length. Simple in construction in the way that extremely expensive things were simple, the simplicity that was the result of complexity executed so thoroughly it disappeared. Deep burgundy, the color of old wine, of something rich and not entirely uncomplicated. The neck.

I looked at Rourke and continued the conversation.

She moved into the room — not toward me, which was correct — and was intercepted almost immediately by a woman I recognized as one of Fordham's portfolio managers, who had apparently encountered Isabella Reyes previously and was demonstrating the enthusiasm of a woman re-encountering someone she had genuinely enjoyed meeting. Isabella received the enthusiasm with the warm, unperformed ease I had been cataloguing since Saturday. She laughed at something — a real laugh, brief and genuine — and the room in her immediate vicinity rearranged itself slightly, the way rooms rearranged themselves around things that were worth looking at without announcing that this was what was happening.

I finished my conversation with Rourke.

I did not cross the room immediately. The value of not crossing the room immediately — of letting her be present in the space for a period of time during which I was visibly occupied elsewhere — was not social strategy in the way that it might have appeared. Or not entirely. It was also, I acknowledged in the quiet interior of my own honesty, the time I needed to conduct a specific internal inventory of the reasons why crossing the room felt, tonight, like a thing that required more deliberate management than it should have.

She had worn what I told her to wear.

She had answered the phone in fourteen seconds, which was a woman who did not perform unavailability. She had responded to the perfume — there was no card — with the directness of someone who felt something and chose to address it rather than ignore it. She had accepted Wednesday in the tone of a woman making a decision rather than receiving an invitation.

And she was across the room in burgundy silk with her hair up and her neck bare and I had sent the perfume, and I did not yet know whether she was wearing it, and I was aware — with the flat, uncomfortable precision I applied to all facts I would have preferred not to be facts — that I was about to find out.

I set my water glass on a side table.

I moved across the room.

She saw me coming at approximately twenty feet — the same early registration I had observed at the Ashworth, the fractional postural adjustment, the chin lifting one quarter inch. She was better at the recovery than she had been on Saturday. A weekend of whatever she'd been doing had recalibrated something — the stillness she produced in response to my approach was smoother tonight, less the product of deliberate effort and more the product of a woman who had processed Saturday and made certain decisions about how Wednesday was going to go.

Those decisions were visible in her posture. In the composed, steady quality of her attention. In the way she extracted herself from the conversation she was in with the graceful, unhurried ease of a woman following her own agenda.

We met in the middle of the room, equidistant from everyone and no one.

"You came," I said.

"You said seven-thirty," she said. "It's seven forty-three."

"The car was on time."

"The car was early," she said. "I made it wait."

Something moved through me that I did not name. "How long?"

The corner of her mouth. "Long enough."

I looked at her. She looked at me. The room moved around us in its cocktail-hour configuration, sixty people and their various agendas, the low bright sound of a Wednesday evening among people who had made something of themselves and had decided to spend the evening in the company of others who had done the same.

Then the scent reached me.

Not aggressively — not the way a perfume announced itself when too much had been applied, the way some women wore fragrance as a statement about their presence. This was the opposite. This was the fragrance the way it was intended — as something that revealed itself by proximity, by the specific closeness of a conversation, by the warmth of skin that had been wearing it long enough for the fragrance to become part of the atmosphere of being near someone rather than a thing separate from them.

Cool at the surface. Mineral. And then underneath it — with the slow, deliberate patience of something that had decided to be known in its own time — the warmth. The part that wasn't the bottle. The part that was hers.

I had sent her a fragrance that I had selected from a house I knew well, in a register I had thought — with whatever the correct word was for the process by which I had made that selection, a process I had not examined too closely — would suit her. The combination of deliberate restraint and something deeper running beneath it.

I had been, apparently, correct.

I had also not anticipated what it would be like to stand close to someone who was wearing a thing you chose for them, and to smell it not as a concept but as a fact, an atmospheric fact, something the air around her was now doing.

I looked at the painting on the wall to her left. A landscape. Acceptable.

"You know Henrik Malone," I said, returning my gaze to hers with the ease of a man who had simply been orienting himself to the room.

"By reputation," she said. "Fordham's a long way from my usual territory."

"And yet."

"And yet I was invited." A pause. Then, with the controlled almost-smile: "By someone."

"Someone," I agreed.

She tilted her head slightly — the gesture I was developing a specific taxonomy of, this head tilt that meant she was considering whether to say the thing she was thinking or a more careful version of it.

She chose the careful version.

"This is a room full of people who have probably never been to a fashion week in their lives," she said. "I'm going to stand out."

"You would stand out in a room full of people who had been to every fashion week in their lives," I said.

She looked at me with that direct, steady quality. Not flustered — she was not a woman who flustered easily, I had established that — but something. Some small recalibration, quick and private.

"Was that a compliment?" she asked.

"It was an observation," I said. "I don't compliment at events."

"Only at home?"

She was giving me my own line back from Saturday. The awareness that she had retained it — held it, produced it here with the ease of someone who filed things away and retrieved them when they were useful — moved through me with the particular quality of information that was more interesting than I had budgeted for.

"I don't compliment at home either," I said.

"Then when?"

"Rarely," I said. "When accuracy requires it."

She held my gaze for a moment. Then she accepted a glass from a passing server — champagne, and she looked at it briefly with an expression I would not have caught if I hadn't been watching for it, something that was almost but not quite amusement.

"Still terrible?" I said.

"Jury's still out," she said, and took a sip, and I watched her mouth and then looked at Henrik Malone across the room because Henrik Malone was the organizationally appropriate thing to look at.

Dinner was at eight.

The seating arrangements at Fordham dinners were not accidental — Henrik Malone believed in curated proximity, the deliberate placement of people whose potential synergies he had identified in advance, an approach that produced either excellent conversations or the particular uncomfortable friction of being positioned next to someone whose professional interests were adjacent to yours in ways neither of you found entirely comfortable. I had been a beneficiary of both outcomes over the years.

Tonight I was at Henrik's right — the placement of a principal guest, the seat that communicated the most about how Henrik understood his own evening's hierarchy. Isabella was three seats to my left, across the oval table rather than beside me, which placed her in my direct line of sight for the duration of dinner and produced the particular, specific challenge of a three-course meal spent being intermittently aware of someone in burgundy silk who was conducting herself at the table with the composed, warm intelligence that I had observed Saturday and that continued, tonight, to operate at the frequency I found most difficult to do nothing about.

She was speaking to the man on her left — a senior partner at a hedge fund whose name I knew, whose reputation was solid, whose tendency to lean toward women he found interesting was known in the social environments we both occupied. He was leaning toward her. She was receiving his attention with the practiced ease of a woman who had been receiving the attention of rooms since she was old enough for rooms to notice her and had developed a way of inhabiting that attention that was gracious without being accommodating.

She did not lean toward him.

"You think it's worth the Morgan Group's involvement?"

"I think it's worth a thorough read of the risk parameters," I said. "Which is a different thing."

Henrik absorbed this with the practiced nod of a man who had learned, over many years and many conversations, that the difference between those two things was precisely the kind of distinction Zain Morgan made and precisely the kind of distinction that was worth taking seriously.

Across the table, Isabella had said something that made the hedge fund partner laugh. Not the performed laugh of a man executing social grace — the actual laugh, caught off guard. She was looking at her plate when it happened, the satisfied expression of a woman who had delivered a line and didn't need to watch it land to know it had.

She caught me watching.

I did not look away. Neither did she. Across the oval table, across the white linen and the candlelight and the arrangement of Henrik Malone's carefully curated proximity, we held the look for two seconds. Three.

Then the first course arrived and the moment reorganized itself.

By the second course she had extracted herself from the hedge fund partner — not obviously, not with any visible mechanism, but with the subtle reorientation of a woman who had decided that conversation had reached its natural limit and had shifted the axis of her attention without the other party understanding quite how it had happened. She was speaking to the woman on her right now — a corporate attorney whose name I placed from a merger case two years ago — with the genuine, interested quality that I was learning was not performance. Isabella Reyes was actually interested in the people she spoke to. It was, I thought, the quality that made her effective in rooms. Not merely the surface — the gown and the composure and the coral red of her mouth — but this. The actual attention. The genuine curiosity that sat beneath the professional management of impression.

It was also the quality that made her, in the particular and specific calculus of this evening, considerably more complicated than a beautiful woman in a burgundy dress.

"She's remarkable," Henrik said.

I looked at him. He was looking across the table with the benign, observational quality of a man who had been in rooms long enough to recognize a presence when he was near one.

"She's a fashion model," I said. The tone of a man providing information, not a man with a position.

"She's considerably more than that," Henrik said, and returned to his lamb with the equanimity of someone who had said a true thing and had no particular investment in whether it was disputed.

I said nothing.

I cut my lamb.

Across the table, Isabella tilted her head at something the attorney had said — that specific tilt, the one I had already mapped, the one that meant she was deciding between the thing she was thinking and the more careful version of it — and she chose, apparently, the thing she was thinking, and the attorney's expression shifted from polite engagement to actual interest, the shift of a person who had been expecting surface and received something with depth.

I watched Henrik Malone watch her.

I watched the hedge fund partner watch her.

I watched the room, in the peripheral and ambient way that I always watched rooms, conduct its inevitable unconscious rearrangement in the direction of wherever she was in it.

And I cut my lamb with the precise, measured movements of a man who was not going to make anything of any of this at this juncture, because this was dinner and there were twenty-three other people at this table and I was the CEO of the Morgan Group and I had a board meeting in twenty-eight days and there was no productive utility in the direction my attention kept finding.

My attention found it anyway.

After dinner the Cavendish's three rooms reorganized themselves for the post-dinner configuration — the dining room cleared for those who wanted to linger over port, the middle room opened for the less formal conversations that dinner had warmed up, the first room, where cocktails had been, now serving as the natural exit point for those whose evening was complete. The movement of sixty people through three connected spaces produced the particular social fluidity of an event in its final hour, the formal architecture dissolving into something looser and more honest.

I had three conversations I needed to have before leaving.

I had them. Efficiently, without waste. The Singapore documentation with Henrik's second, who had more operational detail than Henrik himself. A brief exchange with a woman from Fordham's portfolio who was building something in the battery technology space that I had been peripherally aware of and now, having heard four minutes of her explain it in her own words, was less peripherally aware of. A closing word with Rourke, who was leaving early and wanted to confirm next week's lunch.

Through all of it, I was aware of where Isabella was in the room. Not because I was tracking her — not consciously, not with any directed effort — but because the room told me. The room's ambient social temperature shifted slightly in whatever direction she occupied, and I had become, over the course of four days, calibrated to the shift.

She was in the middle room when I finished with Rourke. Speaking to the corporate attorney again, and a second woman I identified as a gallery owner, the three of them in the configuration of a conversation that had found its own rhythm and would run as long as the evening allowed. She was animated — not in the performing way, but in the genuine way, the way that happened when a person was actually engaged and had stopped managing the level of their own engagement.

I stood in the entrance between the first and middle rooms and watched for approximately six seconds.

Then I went to the bar, which was operating in its post-dinner capacity — spirits and digestifs, the staff reconfigured, the pace slower — and I asked for a scotch, the same as Saturday, and I stood with it and looked at nothing in particular and thought about what I was doing.

What I was doing was: building proximity with a woman I had met four days ago at a gala, whose name I had not known, whom I had called on a Saturday afternoon because my assistant had shown me a copy of Vogue Italia and I had looked at the photographs — three of them, as I had told her, though in truth I had looked at them for longer than was necessary to confirm identification — and found, with the particular clarity of a man who understood his own motivations better than most, that I had wanted a reason to call. And had found the reason and used it without hesitation.

I had sent her a perfume.

I had sent a woman I had danced with once, at midnight, at a social event, a perfume from a house I had known for years and a fragrance I had selected with a degree of consideration that was, by any reasonable measure, disproportionate to the four hours of acquaintance that justified it. I had selected it the way I made all deliberate choices — by understanding what I was working with and what result I was pursuing and choosing the most precise instrument for the distance between the two.

What I had been working with was: a woman who wore amber at professional events. A woman who was deliberate about her surfaces, careful about what was visible, running a management of impression that was sophisticated enough to be almost invisible. A woman whose one genuine laugh of the evening — brief, unarchitected, caught from somewhere beneath the performance — had happened because I had said something that landed as honest rather than charming, and she had responded to the honesty before she could respond to the charm.

What I had been pursuing was: something beneath the surface.

She had worn it.

She did not have a drink.

"I'm aware," I said.

"Henrik Malone is looking for you."

"Henrik Malone can find me."

The corner of her mouth. "That's not how the host-principal-guest dynamic usually works."

"No," I agreed. "It isn't."

She looked at me. The candlelight in this room was different from the Ashworth's chandelier, different from the Briar Room's firelight — warmer, less structured, the kind of light that did things to the color of burgundy silk and the brown of honey eyes that I was specifically not making anything of.

"You were quiet at dinner," she said.

"I was seated next to Henrik."

"You were seated next to Henrik and looking across the table," she said. Not accusing. Observational. The even delivery of a woman who saw things clearly and had decided, tonight, to say some of them.

I looked at her.

"You noticed," I said.

"I notice things," she said.

"I know."

She was quiet for a moment. Around us the post-dinner room did its thing — the Fordham Group and its sixty people moving through their final configurations, some leaving, some settling in for the long close of the evening. The bar staff moved with its practiced quiet. Somewhere in the first room someone was laughing at the sustained volume of someone who had stayed through port.

Then Isabella said, without looking away from me: "You chose this one well."

I did not ask what she meant. She was not talking about the dinner.

"I know what I'm looking for," I said.

"In a fragrance."

"In general."

She held my gaze. The internal machinery — that rapid, invisible recalibration I had been watching since Saturday — was running. I could see it in the quality of her stillness, in the very slight shift of something behind her eyes that was not quite wariness and not quite invitation but occupied the territory between them with the composure of a woman who was deciding, very carefully, which direction to step.

"That," she said finally, "is either the most confident thing I've ever heard or the most arrogant."

"Those are often the same thing," I said.

"They're not," she said. "One is earned."

"Yes," I said. "It is."

She looked at me for another moment. Then she exhaled — barely, just the smallest release of breath, the kind that happened when something had been held and was being let go of — and looked at the room.

"Henrik really is looking for you," she said.

"I know."

"You should go."

"In a moment."

She turned back to me. "In a moment."

Not a question. Not quite an agreement. The specific repetition of a woman who was giving a sentence back to understand what it contained, the way you held something up to the light.

"In a moment," I confirmed.

And we stood at the bar in the candlelight, and the room moved around us at its post-dinner pace, and I did not go to Henrik Malone. Not yet. Not for the duration of whatever this was, this specific, quiet, unhurried thing that was happening in the narrow space between two people standing at a bar at a Wednesday evening dinner who had met four days ago and were behaving — both of them — in ways that were at significant variance with the behavior of people who had met four days ago.

I was aware of the fragrance. Still. The cool surface of it and then, beneath, the warmth that was hers and not the bottle's. I was aware of the specific geography of the space between us — not close, not the closeness of the dance floor on Saturday, the appropriate standing distance of a bar conversation — and of the particular quality of attention she was giving me, which was not the performed quality, not the managed surface, but the thing underneath it. The genuine thing. The thing I had been, since Saturday, conducting the patient, careful, deliberate work of being worth.

"The Fordham Group does this every year," I said.

"So I'm told."

"Next year they're at the St. Regis," I said. "The Cavendish is being renovated."

She looked at me. Something moved in her face — quiet amusement, the kind you didn't perform because performing it would have made it smaller than it was. "You're telling me about next year's dinner."

"I'm providing context."

"You're providing context," she repeated, and the amusement was there, present, real. "About an event that is twelve months away."

"Approximately."

"That implies," she said, with the careful precision of a woman constructing a sentence, "a degree of forward planning regarding my schedule."

"I plan thoroughly," I said. "About most things."

She looked at me for a long, steady moment. The honey-brown eyes in the candlelight. The burgundy silk. The specific, barely-there, warm mineral quality of the air between us that was the fragrance on her skin and that I was, I acknowledged in the flattest and most honest available interior voice, going to be thinking about for considerably longer than was operationally justifiable.

"Zain," she said.

My name in her voice did the thing it had done the first time in the Briar Room, and I had been, in the intervening four days, precisely no more prepared for it.

"Yes," I said.

She seemed to be choosing something. I watched the choosing happen — the internal calibration, the decision about which version of the thing she was going to say.

She chose the honest version. "Why am I here?"

Not why did you invite me. Not what is this dinner. The deeper question. The question that lived under the surface of all the Wednesday evenings and the phone calls on Saturday and the perfume in the matte black box.

Why am I here.

I looked at her. I considered, briefly, the available answers — the managed ones, the strategic ones, the ones that were true in a narrow sense while protecting the larger truth from examination until I was ready to examine it. I was good at those answers. I had been producing them for long enough that they came easily, naturally, without the friction of deliberation.

I did not give her one of those answers.

"Because I find," I said, evenly, without the weight of embellishment, in the lowest register of a voice that did not do things dramatically, "that I am not finished with the conversation we started on Friday."

She held that. Let it sit in the air between us, between the bar and the candlelight and the post-dinner murmur of the Cavendish Club, and I watched something move through her face that was — quiet, brief, gone almost immediately — the most honest thing it had done yet. Not the controlled almost-smile. Not the performed ease. Something that came from deeper, that arrived before it could be managed, and that was gone in less than a second.

But it had been there.

"It was a short conversation," she said. Her voice was steady. She was very good.

"They're the ones worth continuing," I said.

She looked at me for another long moment. Somewhere in the first room someone was beginning the formal goodbyes — Henrik's voice, warm and expansive, doing what hosts did at the close of evenings. The Cavendish's clocks were doing what clocks did. The evening was finishing with or without our participation.

"I have an early call tomorrow," she said.

"I have three," I said. "It's a Wednesday."

She almost laughed. The almost-laugh — the thing that happened in her eyes before her composure recalled it — was visible for exactly half a second. Then:

"Good night, Zain."

And she moved. Past me, toward the first room, toward the coat check, toward the inevitable end of the evening that had been coming for the last twenty minutes and that I had been, in some specific and uncharacteristic way, not wanting to arrive. The burgundy silk moved with her. The fragrance moved with her. The composed, unhurried walk of a woman following her own agenda — always, perpetually, following her own agenda — moved her out of the room and toward the door.

I stood at the bar.

I finished the scotch.

I went to find Henrik Malone, who had been looking for me for the better part of an hour and received my attention with the gracious patience of a host who understood that certain guests operated on their own internal clocks and had made peace with it.

"Remarkable woman," Henrik said, within the first two minutes, because Henrik was nothing if not consistent.

"Mm," I said, which was not an agreement and was not a denial and was the precise response the situation warranted.

Henrik looked at me with the particular expression of a man who had been watching people in rooms for forty years and had developed, through that watching, a specific quality of recognition.

He said nothing more about it.

He was wise enough not to.

The Morgan car was at the East 62nd Street entrance when I emerged at ten forty-seven. Marcus had the door. The city was doing what the city did at this hour — still fully, relentlessly alive, the cold clean air of a March night that had finally decided to cooperate, the skyline in its permanent condition of luminous indifference above the midtown grid.

I got in.

The car pulled out.

I looked out the window at the city passing and I thought, with the clean, organized attention I had been attempting to maintain all evening, about the board meeting. Twenty-eight days. The project. The security at the estate. The isolation of the server. The things I had prepared and the degree to which those preparations were sufficient.

I thought about these things for approximately three minutes.

Then I took out my phone.

Opened a message to the contact I had created on Saturday — Isabella Reyes, full name, formal, the way I catalogued everything — and typed:

You forgot your coat.

I read it back. Deleted it. She had not forgotten her coat — I had watched her take it from the check. I was manufacturing a reason to send a message, which was something I had not done since I was approximately twenty-three years old and considerably less certain than I was now of how time was best spent.

I typed instead:

Thursday evening. Dinner. Not an event.

Read it back.

Sent it.

Set the phone face-down on the seat beside me and looked at the city.

The phone buzzed forty seconds later. I picked it up.

Where.

One word. No question mark. The response of a woman who had received a non-question and answered in kind.

I looked at that one word for a moment — where, flat and direct and without inflection, a word that was an acceptance wearing the clothing of a logistical query — and something moved through my chest with the quiet, absolute certainty of a man who has been moving toward something and has, in this specific moment, confirmed that it is moving toward him too.

I typed the address of a restaurant I had not been to with anyone in two years — a small place, Italian, in the West Village, nothing to do with events or industries or the performance of being seen — and sent it.

Put the phone away.

The Morgan car moved through the lit, indifferent, perpetual city, and outside the window Manhattan continued its ancient business, and in the back seat Zain Morgan sat with the specific, contained, carefully managed interior stillness of a man who was twenty-eight days from the most important meeting of his professional year and was, despite that, thinking about Thursday.

He was thinking about Thursday.

He was thinking about the particular quality of the air at the Cavendish Club's bar at ten-thirty on a Wednesday night, cool and mineral and then warm — irreducibly, specifically warm — in the way of something that had been chosen correctly.

He was thinking about one word: where.

And in the front seat Marcus drove with the discreet silence of a man who understood his job completely, and the city passed outside, and somewhere on the Upper West Side a woman in a long camel coat was arriving at a building on the fourteenth floor of which she would read a restaurant address on a phone screen and make a decision.

He did not need to wonder what decision she would make.

He already knew.

That was the most dangerous thing about it.

He already knew.
