Chapter 9 - CHAPTER 10

Chapter 10 – The Ones Who Remember

The glass chamber moved.

Just slightly.

But enough.

Enough to freeze everyone in place.

Lyana stepped backward slowly.

"Did you see that?"

Kevin raised his weapon.

"Yes."

Inside the chamber—

the subject's fingers twitched.

Then his eyes moved.

Not randomly.

Not like infected.

He was looking at them.

Watching them.

Thinking.

Raj whispered,

"That's impossible…"

Asha shook her head slowly.

"No."

"That's controlled behavior."

Malik stepped forward carefully.

"Everyone stay behind me."

The subject's breathing became heavier.

Slow.

Deep.

Intentional.

Then—

his lips moved.

Dry.

Cracked.

Barely human.

Yet clear.

He spoke.

"…Farid…"

Silence exploded across the room.

Adam froze.

Malik turned immediately.

"What did he say?"

The subject's eyes locked onto Adam.

"…Farid… alive…"

Lyana covered her mouth.

"No…"

Kevin whispered,

"How does he know Farid?"

Suddenly—

the emergency lights flickered violently.

A loud metallic echo rolled through the underground corridor.

Something else was moving.

Not just one subject.

More.

Awakening.

Raj looked around quickly.

"We need to move. Now."

Then—

static noise cracked through Adam's radio.

Everyone stopped breathing.

The signal was weak.

Broken.

But real.

A voice forced its way through the interference.

"…Adam…"

Lyana gasped.

"That's—"

The voice returned again.

Stronger this time.

"…Adam… if you can hear me…"

Farid.

Alive.

Adam grabbed the radio instantly.

"Farid! Where are you?!"

Static answered first.

Then—

"…not inside the facility… forest sector… east side…"

Malik opened the map quickly.

"They're outside the underground perimeter."

Kevin looked relieved for the first time since Rahman's sacrifice.

"They made it."

Another voice entered the signal.

Female.

Shaking.

"…Adam… it's Diana…"

Lyana smiled through tears.

"You're alive…"

Then another voice.

"…we're together… Myra is here… Zul too…"

Raj laughed softly.

"I knew it."

Suddenly—

Farid's voice changed.

Lower.

Urgent.

"You're not safe there."

Adam's expression hardened.

"We already figured that."

Farid answered immediately.

"No… you don't understand."

"We saw them."

Malik asked,

"Who?"

Silence filled the radio.

Then Farid whispered—

"The ones who remember."

Inside the laboratory—

another glass chamber cracked.

A thin fracture line spread across its surface.

Then another chamber.

And another.

Kevin stepped back slowly.

"They're waking up."

Farid's voice returned again.

"We saw one outside the forest."

"He watched us."

"He didn't attack."

Lyana whispered,

"That's not normal…"

Farid continued,

"He followed us."

"He was learning."

Adam looked at the moving chamber beside him.

Then at the subject still staring at them.

Still awake.

Still aware.

Still thinking.

"They're not infected anymore," Adam said quietly.

"They're evolving."

Suddenly—

one chamber shattered.

Glass exploded across the floor.

Liquid flooded the ground.

The subject inside stepped forward slowly.

Breathing heavily.

Eyes focused.

Not wild.

Not empty.

Controlled.

Aware.

Human enough to speak.

But not human anymore.

He looked directly at Adam.

Then smiled.

Just slightly.

"…you came back…"

Adam froze.

"How do you know me?"

The subject tilted his head slowly.

"…we remember you…"

The underground lights died instantly.

Darkness swallowed the laboratory.

Then—

something moved behind them.

More footsteps.

More breathing.

More voices.

Awake.
