Chapter 16 - CHAPTER 14: BROKEN TRUST

The office felt colder.

Empty.

Even with people moving through it.

Even with the hum of work continuing as if nothing had changed.

But everything had.

Amara stood in the conference room, facing Adrian across the long table.

The same table where they had argued. Negotiated. Leaned closer than necessary.

Now it felt like a barrier.

A divide.

A line neither of them knew how to cross anymore.

"Until we figure this out," he said, his voice steady—carefully controlled, "we're suspending joint operations."

Her stomach dropped.

"Adrian… you're serious?"

"Yes."

No hesitation.

No warmth.

Just business.

Just distance.

"Even after everything?" she asked, quieter now, though her chest felt tight.

"Especially after this."

The words landed hard.

Sharp enough to cut through whatever fragile thread still existed between them.

"You're shutting me out," she said, her voice barely holding steady.

"I'm protecting my company."

"And I'm not?" she snapped, the control slipping just enough to let the emotion through.

Adrian's expression didn't change.

But his eyes did.

"Right now," he said, "you're compromised."

The word hit harder than any accusation.

Compromised.

Like she wasn't reliable.

Like she wasn't trusted.

Like she wasn't herself anymore.

Her hands tightened at her sides.

"I didn't do anything."

"Then prove it."

The challenge hung between them.

Cold.

Impersonal.

Unavoidable.

"I shouldn't have to," she said, her voice quieter now, but edged with something deeper.

"You do now."

Silence followed.

Heavy.

Unrelenting.

This wasn't the man who brought her coffee at midnight.

Wasn't the man who stood beside her in quiet understanding.

Wasn't the man who looked at her like she mattered more than the work.

Or maybe—

She thought, her chest tightening painfully—

He was all of those things.

Until he wasn't.

"You don't trust me," she said, her voice soft, almost fragile now.

Adrian didn't answer immediately.

Because the truth was complicated.

Too complicated.

He trusted her in ways that didn't make sense.

But trust in business… trust in something like this—

It wasn't something he could afford to risk.

And that scared him.

"I don't know," he admitted finally.

Honest.

Uncertain.

Human.

And somehow—

That hurt more than a simple no would have.

Amara nodded slowly.

Like she understood.

Like she accepted it.

But her eyes didn't agree.

They held something deeper.

Something quieter.

Something breaking.

"Then we're done here," she said softly.

Too softly.

Like she was trying not to let anything spill over.

Not anger.

Not hurt.

Not everything she was holding back.

She turned toward the door.

Her steps steady.

Controlled.

But there was something in the way she moved—something final.

Something careful.

She paused just before leaving.

The room seemed to hold its breath.

Without looking back, she spoke—

"I would've chosen you."

The words were quiet.

But they echoed.

Heavy.

Unmistakable.

And then she walked out.

The door closing behind her with a soft click that felt louder than anything Adrian had heard all day.

He didn't move.

Didn't speak.

Didn't call her back.

Because for the first time—

He didn't know if choosing her meant losing everything else.

And for the first time—

That question didn't have an answer.
