Cherreads

Chapter 16 - 115 PSI of spotlight pressure

Backstage after the preview performance felt louder than the main stage itself. It was not in sound, no. The audience was still out there, clapping and cheering, their voices blending into one long wave of noise.

But back here, the tension had shape. It moved between the contestants and sat on shoulders, and crawled under skin.

Max stepped off the stage with a slow exhale, rolling his neck like he had just finished a full workout.

"Damn..." he muttered under his breath, a grin tugging at his lips. "That one hit different."

Jalen was the first to reach him. "Bro!" He said in an excited voice, grabbing Max's shoulder. "You snapped!"

Max chuckled. "Aiiit, chillax."

"I'm serious," Jalen continued, eyes wide. "You flipped the whole vibe of the song, nobody did that."

Max shrugged, but his eyes shone a little. "Had to make it mine."

Lila walked up next, arms folded but her expression softer than usual. "That was your best performance yet."

Max nodded once."'Preciate it."

While they talked, Max felt it again- that subtle pull inside his chest like a quiet gathering of energy.

The Artifice System interface flickered.

DING!

["Artifice Energy"]

["Total: 1278"]

The number had jumped hard. But this time, Max was unsurprised as the audience response had been stronger this time.

There was stronger emotion and stronger connection, and all of that translated into more energy.

Max rubbed his chin slowly, keeping his expression casual on the outside.

"Yo, you zoning out again?" Jalen asked.

Max snapped back. "Nah, just thinking."

"'Bout what?"

Max smirked. "About how I just locked in and closed the show like a boss, Eminem type shi".

Jalen laughed. "There he is."

Across the room, Victor Kane stood near a group of contestants, speaking quietly. But his eyes drifted toward Max for just a second, long enough 'cause Max caught it and held it, then he gave a slight nod.

Victor didn't smile this time, he just looked focused.

Good. Max liked that.

Competition felt better when it was real.

A few minutes, later the contestants gathered in a private evaluation room. There were no audience this time and no cameras, just the judges.

The atmosphere shifted immediately. This was not for show, this was where real decisions got made.

Max dropped into a chair beside Jalen, stretching his legs out. "Man," he whispered. "Why this room feel like high school detention?"

Jalen snorted. "Because somebody 'bouta get cooked."

The judges entered and all conversations died instantly.

Adrian Vale took his seat at the center, fingers lightly steepled in front of him. His eyes scanned the contestants in a slow and deliberate manner.

When his gaze passed over Max, it lingered, just a little longer than necessary. Max felt it but he was already used to it.

He kept his face relaxed, no need to react.

The host stood beside the judges. "Tonight's preview performances were revealing." He smiled slightly. "Some of you rose to the challenge."

There was a pause. "But unfortunately, some of you did not."

Tension among the contestants immediately tightened, and then the judges began giving feedback one by one.

Lila received praise for her emotional control, Jalen got commendation for his consistency. Victor Kane was praised for his technical perfection, though one judge noted his performance felt "too safe."

That earned a small shift in Victor's expression.

And then...

"Max Walker."

Max leaned back in his chair slightly. 'Here we go' He thought in a Fabrizio-Romano-esque manner just as Adrian Vale opened his mouth to speak.

"Your interpretation was... unconventional."

Max smirked. "I'll take that".

A faint ripple of amusement passed through the room but then Vale's gaze sharpened slightly as he added. "You did not sing the song as it was written."

Max shrugged. "I sang it how it felt."

There was another pause, then Vale nodded slowly. "And that is precisely why it worked."

Silence reigned for a few seconds as one of the other judges leaned forward. "You changed the emotional timeline of the song, you made it about impending loss rather than past regret."

Max scratched his cheek. "Yeah… figured pain don't always come after the fact."

Hearing him speak, a few contestants shifted in their seats.

That line landed.

Vale continued. "But there is something else."

Max tilted his head slightly. "Something else?"

Vale studied him carefully. "You improve very quickly."

There it was.

Max felt it, that subtle pressure. It was not physical, it was observational like someone trying to solve a puzzle.

Max kept his tone light. "I'm a fast learner."

A few quiet chuckles filled the room but Vale did not laugh. "Be careful," he said calmly.

Max raised an eyebrow. "Of what?"

Vale leaned back slightly. "Rapid growth attracts attention."

The room went still, but Max smiled casually. "Guess I'll have to grow quietly then." He joked.

Vale's lips twitched almost imperceptibly. "That would be wise."

The meeting ended shortly after.

The contestants filtered out slowly, conversations low and tense. Max walked beside Jalen toward the hallway.

"Yo," Jalen said quietly, "you felt that?"

"Felt what?"

"Vale," Jalen replied. "Dude was basically staring into your soul."

Max chuckled. "He's always been doing that, man's prolly just bored."

But inside, Max knew better. 'I gotta be careful'.

The Artifice System was his advantage, but at the same time it was also his biggest secret. If someone like Vale started digging too deep...

Yeah, things could get messy very fast.

Later that night, Max sat alone in his apartment again.

The city lights glowed outside while his guitar rested beside him, but he wasn't playing. He was thinking.

The Artifice System interface flickered open again.

["Artifice Energy"]

["Total: 1296"]

It was slow growth now, but it was growth nonetheless.

Max leaned back against the couch. "Aiiit.... let's talk."

He stared at the floating interface. "You got me leveling up fast, giving me upgrades, classes, and all that..." He paused. "But what's the catch?"

Silence. Of course, he was not surprised.

The Artifice System never answered like that.

Max scoffed lightly. "Yeah... figured."

He stood up and walked to the balcony. Cool air brushed against his face, the city stretched endlessly before him.

Then, he felt it again, that faint vibration in the air.

Max looked up and for a split second, he saw the distant barrier covering the world shimmer. It was faint, almost invisible, but it was there and he caught it.

Max narrowed his eyes. "That ain't normal."

The glow flickered once, then disappeared. Just like before. But this time, Max didn't feel curious. He felt uneasy.

His instincts whispered something low and quiet.

Something was pushing against that barrier. And whatever it was, it wasn't small.

Max exhaled slowly. "Damn..."

He ran a hand through his hair. "Guess saving the world really part of the job now huh?"

He turned and walked back inside but his mind didn't leave the sky, not even for a second.

...
