Both Eric and Gastly felt the pressure as they stared at Scyther.
This was the strongest opponent they had faced till now.
"Gastly, don't let your guard down"
"Gas"
Gastly sank into the shadows as he responded to Eric. Scyther stayed in his place, waiting calmly.
A few seconds passed.
Then, without any warning, Gastly emerged from the shadows in Scyther's blind spot, and fired two quick Ghost Balls in rapid succession!
Scyther didn't move to dodge, however. He instead shrouded his scythes with dark type energy, and cut through them. He had used the move Night Slash!
Then, he vanished and appeared directly above Gastly, with both his scythes crossed and covered in bug type energy.
"X-scissor!"
"Protect"
Gastly threw up a protect barrier just in time. The X-scissor struck the barrier, but it withstood the attack.
Gastly then shifted to the right and dismissed the barrier.
"Strong Ghost Ball, Now!"
Gastly fired a Ghost Ball, much stronger than the earlier 2, at point-blank range.
Scyther was pushed back, but he dug his Scythes into the ground to stabilize himself. Hia eyes narrowed as he observed Gastly.
"Don't give him room to rest! Twin Strong Ghost Balls!"
Scyther's wings flared as he saw the incoming Ghost Balls. Instead of dodging, he accelerated towards Gastly. Both his Scythes were covered in Dark energy, as he sliced through them one by one.
He was met with a third Ghost Ball, however, as soon as he cut through the other 2.
"Quick Attack to dodge it!"
Scyther moved to the right using Quick Attack, but he didn't dodge fully and was hit on his left wing.
"Not bad, kid." Ethan murmured, "But we are not so easy to beat! Aerial Ace!"
"Head into the shadows, Gastly!"
Scyther switched from Quick attack into Aerial Ace. He became a green streak and accelerated towards Gastly.
Gastly barely managed to sink into the shadows in time. He then reappeared to hit Scyther again, but something beyond what Eric expected happened.
Scyther predicted where Gastly was, and used Air Slash, hitting him as soon as he came up.
"Quick Attack, then Nigh slash!"
"Twin Ghost Ball, then gain some distance!"
Scyther cut through the 2 Ghost Balls using Nigh slash, and reached Gastly before he could gain distance.
"X-scissor!"
"Ghost Ball!"
Both Pokemon hit each other and were knocked back. Scyther crashed into the ground, meanwhile Gastly flew back but stayed afloat.
Eric's brows tightened.
'How did he predict Gastly's movements in the shadows?'
"Scyther doesn't rely just on sight. He senses intent. Consider this as guidance from a senior." Ethan replied with a smile after seeing Eric's confusion.
"Well if hiding in the shadows won't work, then we won't. Gastly, Clear Smog. Spread the smog across the battlefield!"
Gastly spun around and released a thick, toxic smog that expanded in every direction. The battlefield vanished behind a mist of Haze.
Scyther stopped moving. The toxins in the air were now messing with his respiratory system, dulling his senses. He backed away defensively, trying to fly out of the smog.
"Now, Will-O-Wisp!"
Through the smog, Ghostly purple flames flickered to life and shot towards Scyther.
Scyther couldn't react properly, he tried to cut the flames but they moved around the Scythe and hit him.
Scyther hissed in pain, and Gastly chose this moment to strike!
"Hex!"
Dark purple energy coiled around Scyther, amplified by the burn.
"Scyther, use Night Slash to cut through the Ghost energy around you!"
Even while in pain, Scyther used Night Slash to cut the energy around him, but the damage was already done.
The ghost type energy traveled into Scyther and mixed with the fire energy from burn, causing severe damage to him.
"Scyyther!!!"
Scyther screamed in pain but managed to stay in the air through sheer willpower.
"He's hurt. Gastly, now! Use a Strong Ghost ball, then a Quick one while he recovers!"
"Scyther, double team. Then heal yourself with Roost!"
Scyther split himself into 10 using Double team. Then all 10 of them used Roost.
Gastly's 2 Ghost Balls hit the wrong Scyther, as he used Roost.
"Gastly, spin and use Clear smog on all of them!"
Gastly spun around and hit every single duplicate of Scyther. Scyther had to stop using Roost to dodge. But by this time he had managed to recover a little bit.
"Scyther, X-scissor at full strength. We have to end this, now!"
"Gastly, you too. Max power Ghost Ball"
Scyther was disoriented from the pain and the toxins in his system, but he powered through it all with sheer willpower. He wanted to give it his all and win for Ethan.
This was the testament to how well Scyther was raised and how great the bond between him and Ethan was.
Scyther bursted with power as he accelerated towards Gastly. Gastly was prepared as well, as he launched his most powerful Ghost Ball at Scyther.
Both attacks met head on. Scyther was held back for a moment, but he soon managed to cut through the Ghost Ball and head towards Gastly.
That moment was enough for Gastly to back off and use Hex, however.
Scyther was once again assaulted by Ghost type energy inside his body. The burn wasn't dispelled yet, causing massive damage to him.
"Scyy"
But he still powered through. He was going to win here and make Ethan Happy!

'I'm sorry for being such a talentless and poor trainer, Scyther'
'I'm almost 40 and still a beginner trainer…I must be a laughing stock for others…But I'm fine with it. As long as I don't disappoint you as a trainer, I don't care what the others think.'
'Come to think of it, should I give you a nickname? But I'm bad at those…how does Reaper sound? Ya I know, its too edgy…then what should I…Oh? You are saying you're fine with Scyther?'
'Look, Scyther! I got you an Eviolite! This will make you a lot stronger in battle!'
'If we win this tournament…Nobody will pity you for having me as a trainer!'

All these thoughts crossed Scyther's mind in an instant, making him push his body beyond its limits.
He reached Gastly and struck.
"Quick Ghost Ball, Now!"
Gastly was hurled across the battlefield from the impact; the purple Haze around him beginning to fade out. He barely hung onto his consciousness as he weakly looked at Scyther's direction.
Scyther however, could not go on after taking that final Ghost Ball, despite his willpower.
"Scyther!"
Ethan ran up to him, worried. He only relaxed after confirming Scyther was fine
"You did amazing, partner. I'm so proud to be your trainer."
Ethan praised Scyther, and then recalled him to his Pokeball. He then looked at Eric and smiled.
"I enjoyed our battler. You've raised your Pokemon well."
"…Thanks. You were quite good yourself."
"Hahaha, thanks. That makes me happy."
Ethan then got up to shake hands with Eric
"Do you wanna exchange contacts?"
"I don't have a phone yet."
"Oh? Well then I hope we meet again someday."
"…Sure."
Both trainers shook hands and went to their seperate exits. This battle was the most difficult battle Eric had faced till now. But now, he was finally through to the Semi-Finals!
Eric was quite happy after winning this match, even if he didn't show it much.
Gastly also leveled up after the fight, reaching lvl 24!
