Chapter 6 - chapter 6

Small Moments:

Alexander Mansion – Main Hallway – 9:00 AM

Liam had been visiting the mansion for three weeks now.

Wedding planning was the excuse. Flowers. Catering. Music. Guest lists.

But everyone in the house had started to notice something.

Liam Sterling was always there.

Zara noticed too.

She noticed the way his eyes followed her when she walked through a room. The way he found reasons to be in the hallway when she was cleaning. The way he said her name—softly, like it was something precious.

It terrified her.

"Zara."

She looked up. Liam stood at the end of the hallway, a cup of coffee in his hand.

"Mr. Sterling," she said, keeping her eyes on the floor.

"I told you. Liam."

"I can't call you that."

"Why not?"

"Because you're engaged to Amara."

The words came out sharper than she intended.

Liam was quiet for a moment. Then he said, "That doesn't mean we can't be... friendly."

Zara finally looked at him. His expression was open. Honest.

No hidden motives.

At least, none that she could see.

"Friendly," she repeated.

"Yes. Friendly." He smiled slightly. "Is that so terrible?"

Zara thought about Imani's warnings. Amara's cold stares. The danger of being noticed by anyone in this house.

"Yes," she said quietly. "It is."

She walked away.

Liam watched her go.

He didn't follow.

But he didn't stop smiling either.

Alexander Mansion – Garden – 2:00 PM

Amara wanted to have lunch outside.

The garden was beautiful in the afternoon light. Flowers bloomed in shades of pink and white. A soft breeze carried the scent of roses.

Zara stood at the edge of the garden, holding a pitcher of lemonade.

She was supposed to wait until the guests were ready for more drinks.

But she couldn't stop looking at him.

Liam sat across from Amara, nodding politely as she talked. His smile was there, but it didn't reach his eyes.

Then his gaze shifted.

He looked at Zara.

Just for a second.

Just a glance.

But Zara felt it like a touch.

She looked away quickly, her face burning.

"Zara!"

Imani's voice cut through the air.

Zara turned. Imani stood at the garden entrance, her arms crossed.

"Stop standing around like a statue. Refill the drinks."

"Yes, Ma."

Zara walked toward the table. Her hands trembled as she poured lemonade into Amara's glass.

"Careful," Amara said coldly. "Don't spill."

Zara nodded. She moved to Liam's glass.

"Thank you, Zara," he said quietly.

Their fingers brushed as she set down the pitcher.

Electricity.

Zara pulled her hand back like she had been burned.

"Excuse me," she mumbled.

She walked away as fast as she could without running.

Behind her, she heard Amara say, "She's so clumsy. I don't know why my father still keeps her and her mother in this house ."

Liam didn't respond.

But Zara knew he was watching her leave.

She always knew.

Staff Quarters – Kitchen – 4:00 PM

"You're playing with fire."

Zara looked up from the potatoes she was peeling. Mrs. Patmore stood in the doorway, her arms crossed.

"I don't know what you mean."

"Yes, you do." The old cook walked closer. "The Sterling boy. He looks at you. You look at him. Everyone sees it."

Zara's heart pounded. "No one sees anything."

"Amara sees. Imani sees." Mrs. Patmore sat down beside her. "Child, I'm not saying this to hurt you. I'm saying this to protect you. That man is not for you."

Zara's eyes filled with tears. "I know."

"Then stop looking at him."

"I can't."

The words slipped out before Zara could stop them.

Mrs. Patmore was quiet for a long moment.

"Love is a dangerous thing," she said finally. "Especially for someone like you."

"Someone like me?"

"Someone with no power. No money. No protection." Mrs. Patmore took her hand. "If Amara decides you're a threat, she will destroy you. And Imani will help her."

Zara pulled her hand away. "I'm not a threat. I'm nobody."

"Not to him."

The words hung in the air.

Zara picked up the knife and kept peeling potatoes.

Her hands were shaking.

But she didn't stop.

She couldn't stop.

Because stopping meant thinking.

And thinking meant admitting the truth.

She was falling for a man she could never have.

Alexander Mansion – Front Driveway – 6:00 PM

Liam walked to his car.

The sun was setting, painting the sky in shades of orange and pink.

He should be happy. The wedding plans were moving forward. His father was pleased. The families were satisfied.

But he felt empty.

"Mr. Sterling."

He turned.

Zara stood by the service door, a trash bag in her hand.

She looked surprised to see him. Like she hadn't meant to speak.

"I..." She hesitated. "I just wanted to say... have a safe drive home."

Liam smiled. A real smile.

"Thank you, Zara."

She nodded quickly and disappeared back inside.

Liam stood there for a moment, staring at the door.

Then he got into his car and drove away.

He didn't know it yet.

But he was already hers.

And she was already his.

They just hadn't admitted it yet.

Staff Quarters – Zara's Room – 10:00 PM

Zara sat on her mattress, hugging her knees to her chest.

She had said something to him.

Have a safe drive home.

Such a small thing. Such a normal thing.

But it felt like jumping off a cliff.

"Why did I say that?" she whispered to herself.

Because she wanted to. Because she had wanted to say something—anything—to him.

Because every time she saw him, her chest ached.

Because she was falling.

And she didn't know how to stop.
