Satoru Gojo could see clearly that Sukuna, the King of Curses, had created such a Veil because he was afraid of something.
But Satoru Gojo was in no mood to mock Sukuna at this moment; his primary goal was simply to confirm the survivors, nothing more.
Immediately afterward, the police and "Window" arrived at the scene simultaneously. The police were responsible for dispersing the crowd, while Window checked Itadori's current condition and took charge of transferring him.
Satoru Gojo did not directly enter the passage leading to the sewer that Sukuna had opened, as doing so would have been too obvious. The commotion Itadori had caused was already significant enough.
He first approached Seto's body. Gojo knew of Seto's existence and had crossed paths with him during missions; they were acquaintances to some extent.
Satoru Gojo silently confirmed that there were no signs of struggle, nor any traces of Cursed Residue. It was clear that Seto had been eliminated by the enemy in a single, swift blow. Satisfied with this, Gojo continued into the sewer.
Using the Rikugan to precisely control repulsive force, Satoru Gojo easily tossed the collapsed rubble into the nearby stream.
Beneath the debris, he soon discovered the remains of Kento Nanami's body, along with fragments of his destroyed phone.
Ironically, Satoru Gojo couldn't even manage to piece Nanami back together completely.
From the damage to the phone, Gojo could tell that it had not been destroyed as collateral damage in an attack; the deformation clearly showed it had been crushed deliberately.
Gojo considered several possibilities for why the enemy would deliberately target a phone. One possibility was that Nanami had thrown the phone as a weapon in a moment of desperation. A second was that Nanami had realized the situation was hopeless and had tried to use the phone to call for help. The third possibility was that the enemy had targeted the phone from the start, wanting to prevent Nanami from sending any information.
Satoru Gojo personally leaned toward the latter two possibilities. In his mind, Nanami was a mature and reliable Grade 1 Jujutsu Sorcerer. He wouldn't have ventured into such a dangerous place without a reason; he would have come because he was investigating something. Thus, it was unlikely he would reach a point where he had nothing left but a phone to use in desperation.
Of the remaining two possibilities, Gojo rationally believed more in the second. However, the scattered Cursed Residue carried the aura of the Cursed Spirit that had previously shouted that Suguru Geto was still alive. This subconsciously gave him more weight toward the third possibility.
Although Satoru Gojo did not show it on his face, he felt a deep sense of guilt and self-reproach in his heart.
If it was the second possibility, it meant Nanami had intended to contact him for help but was ultimately interrupted by the enemy.
Gojo remembered that he had once said he could only save those who were already prepared to be saved.
Before Nanami died, he must have hoped Gojo would come to save him.
Not only had Gojo failed to meet that hope, he could even be considered the one responsible for putting him in that situation.
If he hadn't entrusted the task of educating and supervising Itadori to Nanami due to his own busy schedule, perhaps today's tragedy would not have occurred.
That was an enemy so formidable that even Sukuna, the King of Curses, had been forced into a pathetic defensive stance, waiting for someone to intervene.
Rather than feeling anger at the culprit behind all this, Gojo mostly reflected on himself.
If the enemy was that strong, then as the world's strongest Jujutsu Sorcerer, he should have been the one to face them. In the end, he had failed to fulfill this responsibility.
This was already the second time recently. The first was Ijichi, this time it was Nanami, and before that, there was Geto. Was being the "strongest" really just being the strongest at being unable to do anything? The title "strongest" truly felt absurd.
After Mahito left, he also received a message from Kenjaku about accompanying him to Kyoto before the Goodwill Event to discuss cooperation with someone from Kyoto Jujutsu High.
The "someone" Kenjaku mentioned, Mahito naturally deduced from the manga, was Kokichi Muta from Kyoto Jujutsu High, whose original body could not move freely due to a congenital "disability" caused by the effects of a Heavenly Restriction.
Mahito had no objection to this. If the plot followed the manga, the intelligence cooperation with Kokichi Muta would have been optional. However, after Mahito drastically altered the story's direction, it became necessary to obtain information on potential changes as soon as possible.
At the same time, this meant that until Mahito kept the appointment, Kenjaku would likely not seek them out for anything else. This free time could therefore be used to implement Mahito's plan.
However, Jogo's strength recovery was even slower than Mahito had anticipated. But this did not stop him from pushing forward with the plan; he simply moved the implementation site from Mount Fuji to the active volcano Mount Miharayama on Izu Ōshima, near Tokyo.
Mount Miharayama itself is a relatively active volcano. Its most recent eruption led to the evacuation of ten thousand residents, and the area near the crater has been closed off for nearly ten years, with no one allowed to approach. Using it to spread humanity's fear of the earth would be more than sufficient.
Mahito's idea was simple: deepening humanity's fear of the earth should increase power, which would also boost Jogo's power to some extent.
He wasn't particularly worried about Jujutsu High or Kenjaku noticing.
This was mainly due to the nature of Cursed Spirits; the vast majority of humans cannot perceive them. Moreover, a volcanic eruption is outside the scope of Jujutsu Sorcerers' duties, and news cameras cannot capture Cursed Spirit-related information. It could be considered an "open secret."
"Although I haven't done anything like this before, I can think of two ways," Mahito said. "One is from the outside: you expand your Cursed Technique's effect to the volcano and use it to control volcanic activity. But your condition hasn't fully recovered, so the process will take some time. The other is to enter the interior of the volcano and control the activity from within, making it erupt eventually." He paused and half-jokingly asked, "But you won't drown in the magma, will you?"
Jogo gave him a speechless glare, ignoring the joke.
"So all I need to do is make the volcano erupt?"
Mahito placed his hands on his hips and replied confidently:
"Of course. Once we make this volcano erupt, all we need is to expand the disaster caused by it. Humans themselves will help us spread the word for the rest."
Mahito's confidence was partly due to the fear generated by Sukuna's display of strength in front of ordinary people and the rapid spread of that news. To some extent, this feedback had strengthened Mahito, even if the actual gain was only slight.
