Chapter 3 - Chapter 2: A New Beginning

The car glided smoothly along the wide, sunlit streets of Delhi. Ananya Menon sat in the back seat, her fingers lightly gripping the strap of her bag, as the driver expertly navigated past towering buildings, tree-lined avenues, and bustling cafes. She watched the city unfold around her—bright banners fluttering in the breeze, people moving with purpose, cyclists weaving gracefully through the flow of pedestrians. Every corner seemed alive, buzzing with possibility and energy.

The driver, a calm and experienced man, steered the car with precision. His hands moved confidently on the wheel, his eyes scanning the road ahead, and his posture radiated quiet assurance. Occasionally, he gestured politely to other vehicles, making space for them to pass, his skill making the journey feel smooth and effortless.

Her father, Dr. Rajiv Menon, a calm, respected cardiologist, reached over and lightly touched her hand. "Don't worry, Chinnu," he said softly, using the nickname he had given her since she was a little girl. "Just enjoy the view. You'll get used to the rhythm of the city soon."

Her mother, Meera Menon, a warm hearted school principal who had always balanced discipline with care, leaned slightly toward her, her hand brushing Ananya's. "Delhi is full of opportunities, Chinnu. Focus on your studies, make friends, and always take a moment to enjoy the beauty around you. And remember, you can always call us if you feel homesick."

"From the front seat, her elder brother, Aadith, a final-year engineering student with a teasing streak and a protective heart, grinned from the front seat. "Keep your eyes open, little sis. You might discover places and experiences you never imagined. And don't forget, we're just a call away if you need us."

Ananya smiled nervously, glancing around at the bustling streets. Delhi was nothing like Kochi—the serene backwaters, coconut groves, and the quiet lanes of Panampilly Nagar she had grown up in felt worlds away. She missed the familiar smell of wet earth after rain, the sound of temple bells in the early morning, and her mother's homemade pazhampori and masala chai waiting for her on the veranda.

As the car pulled up to the hostel, Ananya's eyes widened. The building was massive, neat, and buzzing with students moving in and out. Two security guards stood at the gate, and a couple of senior students helped new arrivals carry luggage.

"Wow… it's huge," Ananya whispered to herself as she stepped out of the car.

Her father lifted her bags with ease, his strong hands steadying her nerves. "Here, let me help you. We'll make sure you get settled quickly," he said.

Her mother nodded, her eyes soft but firm. "Remember, Ananya, this is your responsibility now. Keep your belongings safe. Be careful, and take care of yourself."

The driver unloaded the trunk as her father asked a few questions to the hostel staff, ensuring everything was in order. When it was time to say goodbye, her parents and brother enveloped her in a warm embrace. Her father ruffled her hair with a smile, whispering, "Take care, chinnu. You'll do fine." Her mother held her hand a little longer, her eyes glistening with unshed tears. Aadith winked and added, "Text me the moment you survive the first week!"

And just like that, Ananya was alone, standing at the entrance of the hostel. The building seemed enormous now, looming over her in the fading light. A mix of excitement and nervousness churned in her stomach. She took a deep breath, trying to steady herself, and stepped forward.

Inside the hostel room, the air smelled of fresh paint and cleaning polish. She was greeted by three girls.

"Hi! You must be Ananya, right? I'm Riya! First-year too," said the cheerful one, bouncing slightly in excitement.

"I'm Sanya," said the quieter girl, smiling warmly. "Welcome! Don't worry, we'll help you settle in."

The third girl, Charlotte, leaned casually against the wall, arms crossed, looking Ananya up and down. "Let's see if you survive Delhi," she said dryly, scrolling on her phone.

Ananya smiled politely. Two friendly, one… a little intimidating.

After introductions, they gave her a quick tour of the room. Four single beds, a study table, a wardrobe—and a chaos of luggage on the floor.

"Let's unpack first!" Riya said enthusiastically.

Sanya nodded. "Yeah, we'll make it cozy for all of us."

Charlotte smirked. "Just don't mess up my side of the room."

Unpacking took a while. Clothes, books, toiletries—all had to find their place. Riya was hyper and chaotic, Sanya methodical and neat, and Charlotte… well, Charlotte just observed.

Once done, the three girls explored the hostel together. They checked out the common areas, the library, and finally, the canteen. The smell of food made Ananya's stomach growl, and soon they were seated at a table, eating dinner, chatting, and laughing.

By the time she returned to the room, Ananya was tired but happy. She unpacked a few remaining things, freshened up, and changed into comfortable clothes.

Standing by the window, she gazed out at the campus. The sky above Delhi was slowly darkening, stars beginning to peek through. Her mind wandered—Tomorrow is my first day. What if I get lost? What if I can't manage? But alongside the jitters, a tiny spark of thrill ran through her. New friends, new classes, new city… it all felt like the start of something bigger.

She leaned against the window frame, letting the cool night breeze brush her face, and whispered softly to herself, "Alright… let's see what Delhi has in store for me."

And somewhere, just beyond the city lights, she didn't know it yet, someone was already watching the world quietly, powerful and distant, waiting for paths to cross.
