Chapter 43 - Chapter 43: The Casual Grooming

I sat patiently in the single sofa chair, my legs crossed, waiting for the inevitable chaos of the Dunphy women getting ready to finally conclude. Uncle Mitchell and Uncle Cam were quietly discussing the Los Angeles real estate market, while the sound of Phil frantically scrambling behind the decorative screen had thankfully stopped.

Finally, a symphony of clicking heels echoed down the wooden staircase.

I looked up toward the entryway. The ladies of the house were making their grand descent, and I had to admit, they all looked incredibly good.

Claire led the pack, wearing a sleek, tailored black sheath dress that highlighted her figure and projected an aura of absolute authority. Behind her was Haley, channeling the ultimate 'cool girl' aesthetic. She was wearing a silky, emerald-green slip dress, casually paired with a stylish, slightly oversized cropped cardigan that hung off one shoulder. It was effortless and highly fashionable.

And then there was Alex. She had traded her usual plaid skirts and oversized sweaters for a very modest, tasteful navy-blue midi dress. She had even let her dark hair down, removing her usual headband. She looked surprisingly elegant, shedding a bit of her prickly middle-school armor.

As a reincarnated soul who appreciated good aesthetics, I gave a small, approving nod. They really did clean up well.

I stood up from my chair to greet them, naturally stepping into the center of the living room to show off my own transformation.

The moment I stood under the chandelier light, the three women stopped dead in their tracks.

Claire's eyes widened to the size of saucers. Haley actually lowered her flip phone, her jaw dropping slightly. Alex just stared, her brown eyes blinking rapidly behind her glasses as if trying to compute the data of her goofy brother suddenly looking like a junior CEO.

Before anyone could say a word, Phil emerged from the hallway. He was finally wearing his suit trousers, his black tie perfectly straight. Right behind him floated Grandma DeDe, looking like a high-priestess of a spiritual retreat in a flowing, highly patterned silk maxi dress adorned with silver bangles.

"Wow. You all look fantastic," I said smoothly, offering a polite, charming smile to the room. "Mom, Haley, Alex... truly stunning. And Granny, that silk dress is magnificent. You look like royalty."

DeDe giggled, waving her hand bashfully, completely eating up the flattery.

However, Claire, recovering from her initial shock of seeing me in a tailored suit, instantly activated her hyper-critical maternal radar. Her eyes narrowed as she zeroed in on my outfit, scanning me for flaws like a terminator locking onto a target.

She marched right up to me, her hands reaching out to inspect my collar.

"Luke, sweetie," Claire said, her tone a mix of pride and intense micromanagement. "The suit fits perfectly, but... you didn't wear the tie! And you left the top two buttons of your shirt completely undone!"

It was true. While the suit had come with a sleek dark blue silk tie, I had purposely left it hanging upstairs in my closet. Instead, I had unbuttoned the collar, embracing the 'messy, casual Young Master' look that was so popular in Webnovels. It projected an aura of effortless power without making me look like a stiff corporate drone.

Claire's hands moved up to my head. "And your hair! It's completely messy! You didn't comb it down at all! It's sticking up everywhere!"

"It's called a wolf-cut style, Mom," I defended lazily, dodging her hands as she tried to flatten my artfully tousled blond hair. "It adds texture. It's aerodynamically cool."

Claire leaned in, taking a sharp sniff of my collar. Her eyes widened in absolute horror. "And you didn't put on any cologne! You just smell like... soap! And your wrists are bare! Where is the silver watch your grandfather bought you last Christmas?!"

I tensed slightly, taking a half-step back. I didn't normally wear heavy perfumes or watches; in my past life, those were expensive luxuries I couldn't afford, and I wasn't used to the feeling of cold metal on my wrist.

"Mom, I think it's fine," I said, my mouth twitching slightly. "I'm clean. The suit is nice. I don't need to smell like a department store."

"We are going to a penthouse restaurant in Santa Monica!" Claire exaggerated, throwing her hands up in the air. "You cannot go looking like you just got out of bed in a suit! You need to look put-together!"

"Actually, honey," Phil chimed in from the sidelines, leaning casually against the back of the sofa. "I think the boy looks pretty good. He's rocking the casual-cool vibe. I think combing his hair down flat would just make him look a little strange, like a news anchor. Let the hair be free!" Phil made an exaggerated, flowing motion with his hands over his own head.

To my surprise, Alex stepped forward. She gazed at me with a genuinely sweet, highly appreciative smile.

"I agree with Dad," Alex said softly, adjusting her glasses. "Luke looks really good just being casual. It suits his... new temperament."

"Oh, absolutely!" Uncle Cam chimed in enthusiastically, clapping his hands together. "It's very 'effortless chic'! It says, 'I have money, but I don't care about it'. That is the highest tier of fashion, Claire!"

Even DeDe nodded along, her silver bangles clinking. "Yes, Claire, stop trying to cage his wild spirit. The messy hair allows his crown chakra to breathe properly."

Claire looked around the room, realizing she was completely outvoted by the entire family. She let out a massive, highly exaggerated, defeated sigh.

"Okay. Fine. We will leave the hair and the tie," Claire conceded, rubbing her temples. "But you are at least going to wear a watch, and you are going to spray something! Wait right here! Do not move!"

Before anyone could object, Claire spun around on her high heels and sprinted down the hallway toward the master bedroom. She returned exactly ten seconds later, holding a bottle of Phil's expensive cologne and a sleek, silver wristwatch.

Without asking for permission, she aggressively sprayed the cologne twice at my chest. A cloud of cedar and citrus engulfed me. I coughed, waving the mist away from my face. She then grabbed my left wrist, slapped the heavy silver watch onto it, and clasped it tight.

"There," Claire said, dusting her hands off with finality. "Now you are ready for society. Let's get out of here before we miss our reservation."

The whole family finally mobilized, grabbing purses and keys, and shuffling out the front door into the cool evening air.

We gathered in the driveway to organize our travel arrangements. Uncle Mitchell and Uncle Cam walked over to their reliable, eco-friendly Toyota Prius.

Phil, meanwhile, practically skipped over to a sleek, gleaming black Porsche Cayenne parked on the edge of the driveway. He had rented it specifically for the wedding weekend to fit in with the country club crowd, and he was treating it like his newborn child.

Grandma DeDe stood next to her own luxury sedan, holding her keys. She watched Mitchell get into the Toyota, and instantly, her eyes twinkled with a manipulative, highly theatrical sadness.

"Ah... good grief," DeDe sighed loudly, projecting her voice so the entire driveway could hear her. She pressed a hand to her chest, looking down at the concrete miserably. "I suppose I am the only one who needs to drive all alone in the dark. So lonely for me. Driving on these dangerous highways with no one to talk to... especially since my sweet son Mitchell is riding with Cameron."
