Chapter 3 - Chapter 3 — The Absence That Refuses to End

Night came without announcement.

There was no gradual dimming of light, no lingering warmth of day. The forest simply lost its brightness until darkness settled fully, quiet and indifferent, as though nothing had changed except visibility.

Lin Yue continued walking until his body could no longer obey.

There was no warning.

No slowing.

His legs simply failed.

He fell.

The ground was cold and uneven beneath him, stone pressing against his side. For a moment, he remained still, eyes open, staring into the formless darkness above. His breathing was shallow, inconsistent—each inhale incomplete, each exhale lingering too long.

His body was failing.

Not suddenly.

Not violently.

But continuously.

Hunger surfaced.

At first, it was faint—barely noticeable. Then it sharpened, spreading through his body, demanding attention. A natural response. A fundamental need.

Then—

It weakened.

And slowly—

It disappeared.

"…So even this doesn't remain."

There was no reaction in his voice.

No resistance.

Thirst followed.

A dryness formed in his throat, subtle at first, then deepening. Under normal circumstances, it would have driven him to act—to search, to drink, to survive.

Now—

It faded.

Then—

Vanished.

Lin Yue did not move.

Not because he chose not to.

Because he could not.

Even if water had been placed beside him, he doubted he could reach it. Strength no longer belonged to him. It was something distant—something remembered, but no longer possessed.

Inside him—

That point remained.

Silent.

Unmoving.

It did not respond to his weakening state.

Did not react to the fading of his body.

It simply existed.

Time passed.

Or perhaps it didn't.

Without change, without motion, the concept lost meaning.

At some point—

His breathing stopped.

There was no struggle.

No final resistance.

Just—

An end.

The forest remained unchanged.

The wind moved faintly through the trees. Leaves shifted softly. Somewhere in the distance, something stirred.

Life continued.

Lin Yue's body lay still.

Completely.

And yet—

Within that stillness—

Something moved.

That point—

Shifted.

Not outward.

Not expanding.

But folding inward.

The absence of breath—

Did not remain.

The state of death—

Did not stabilize.

It was consumed.

Lin Yue's chest rose.

Once.

Shallow.

Incomplete.

Then again.

Air returned.

Not drawn in.

Not forced.

Allowed.

His heart resumed.

Not with strength.

Not with life—

But with continuation.

His eyes opened.

There was no shock.

No confusion.

No fear.

"…So death doesn't hold."

A simple conclusion.

He remained where he was for a moment longer, unmoving, as if confirming something that no longer needed proof.

Nothing could conclude.

Not life.

Not death.

Not even the state between.

He placed his hand against the ground and pushed himself up. His body trembled immediately, muscles straining, bones producing faint
