Chapter 11 - Chapter 11: Hannah Carter’s Midnight Promise

On the warm and comfortable bed, Daniel and Hannah lay wrapped in each other's arms.

Daniel smacked his lips lightly, his face still carrying the satisfied expression of someone savoring the moment.

Hannah was completely exhausted.

Seeing the way he looked, she rolled her eyes and said with mock annoyance,

"Stop causing trouble. You really put me in such a difficult position today!"

Daniel Ross laughed and said, 'So, between me and Jack Miller, whose cock do you like more?'

Lily Miller remained silent; today, she felt as if she had been given a second chance in life.

Jack Miller was a loser who liked to have fun. His cock was only as small as a finger and was nothing compared to Daniel Ross's. Of course, she couldn't say that openly.

After a few moments of silence, she changed the subject and asked,

"Daniel, is my foot really not going to heal that quickly?"

"No, that's not exactly it," Daniel said with a smile.

"If you really need to go back, I can massage it again later."

"You'll be able to get out of bed and walk a few steps today, but you still won't be able to travel very far."

Hannah glared at him angrily.

"So you were lying to me earlier?"

Daniel shook his head.

"I wasn't lying."

"I can only help it recover temporarily."

"Your injury is still serious, and it'll take a long time to heal completely."

Hannah sighed.

"Alright, then massage it for me again later."

Daniel nodded, then asked,

"Sister Hannah, did you come back to your parents' village this time to borrow grain?"

"You guessed right?" Hannah looked at him, then nodded.

"You're absolutely right."

"We're almost out of food at home, so I had no choice but to come back and think of some solution."

Daniel nodded slowly.

"Then you'll probably end up disappointed this time."

"Most people in Red Star Township can barely fill their stomachs right now."

"If they can manage one bowl of corn porridge a day, they already consider themselves lucky."

Hannah frowned.

"Didn't they say relief grain would be sent?"

"They say it exists, but it still hasn't arrived yet," Daniel replied.

Hannah sighed again and asked anxiously,

"Then what are we supposed to do?"

"My mother-in-law and I can manage with eating less."

"But Brother Jack works hard every day. If he doesn't eat enough, he won't even have the strength to work."

"And then there's little Henry. If he doesn't eat enough, he keeps crying and making trouble. It's really worrying."

Daniel frowned.

"Doesn't Jack eat lunch at the factory? He shouldn't be starving, right?"

Hannah shook her head.

"I don't know what's going on. He's been spending a lot of money lately."

"After payday at the start of the month, he didn't bring home anything extra except a little cornmeal."

Daniel thought for a moment.

"Then he's probably gambling."

"I heard people in the workshop talking about it several times before, but I didn't pay much attention."

"Now it sounds like it might actually be true."

Hannah was startled.

"Is that really true?"

Daniel nodded.

"Mm. I'd say there's an eighty or ninety percent chance."

Hannah was filled with sorrow and resentment.

She clenched her teeth.

But after a while, that anger turned into helplessness.

Her status in her husband's family was too low.

So what if she knew Jack was gambling outside?

All she could do was watch helplessly.

After a while, she came back to herself.

Looking at Daniel, a thought suddenly crossed her mind.

Hesitantly, she asked,

"Daniel… you often go to the countryside to buy supplies."

"Do you happen to have a little extra grain?"

"Could you lend me some so I can take it back for my mother-in-law?"

Daniel had no intention of helping Jack Miller's family, so he widened his eyes and said,

"Sister Hannah, you know how precious food is these days."

"Where would I get extra grain to lend you?"

"Even my own ration isn't enough for me."

Hannah curled herself closer into his arms and said in a sweet voice,

"Daniel, please help your sister think of some way."

"Otherwise, when I go back, I really won't be able to explain myself."

Daniel sighed.

"Sister Hannah, I want to help you, but I really don't have the means."

"As you know, every few days I have to borrow grain from others myself."

At that moment, Hannah remembered how Daniel often borrowed money to buy grain, then always paid it back after payday.

He had never once broken his word.

"It seems I'll have to go back to my parents' house and bring back some sweet potatoes and potatoes instead," Hannah said sadly.

Daniel smiled.

"Sister Hannah, where would your family even get sweet potatoes and potatoes now?"

"The brigade already collected them all and stored them as seed stock."

Hannah's heart skipped.

She suddenly sat up and asked seriously,

"Really? Daniel, you're not joking with me, are you?"

Daniel gently helped her lie back down, tucked the blanket over her, and replied,

"Sister Hannah, why would I lie to you?"

"If you don't believe me, go back to your parents' house tomorrow and you'll find out yourself."

Hannah let out a deep sigh.

She truly believed him now.

"So you were right. This time I really will have to go back empty-handed."

At twenty-five or twenty-six, Hannah's mature beauty truly had Daniel captivated.

Taking advantage of this opportunity, Daniel Ross released all the semen he had been holding back for so long into Lily Miller, which made her extremely distressed.

By around five in the evening, Hannah insisted on returning to Carter Village to see her parents.

Daniel had already gotten what he wanted from the day, so he stopped trying to persuade her.

The two of them got up and dressed, and Daniel didn't forget to massage her foot again.

This time, Daniel secretly used the system to buy a treatment spray for sprains.

The effect was immediate.

Hannah was able to get out of bed, and after walking a few steps she felt only a faint pain that she could tolerate.

"Don't walk too far," Daniel reminded her.

"If you still want to go back tomorrow, I'll take you by bicycle to the roadside so you can catch the bus."

"Don't push yourself too hard."

Hannah nodded without standing on ceremony.

"You should be giving me a ride anyway."

"You already got off easy today."

"If you won't even help with such a small thing, I'll really be disappointed."

Today, Daniel Ross celebrated it like New Year's Day, having intercourse with the greedy Lily Miller until her pussy turned red and swollen, and she had no strength left to resist.

"Don't rush off yet," Daniel said.

"There are still about ten rice buns and some leftovers in the kitchen."

"Why don't we heat them up and eat together before you go to Carter Village?"

Hannah looked up at the sky.

Winter nights came early, and it was already getting dark.

Seeing her hesitation, Daniel said,

"Don't expect a good meal when you get to your parents' house."

"You might not get any food at all."

"These days there's a shortage everywhere."

"Eat something before you leave. I'm saying this for your own good."

Hearing that, Hannah nodded.

"Alright, then I'll eat first before I go."

Daniel smiled and helped her into the kitchen.

The kitchen was dimly lit, so Daniel lit a kerosene lamp and then started the stove.

"I collected some eggs yesterday. Would you like a few?" Daniel asked.

This woman had stayed with him the entire afternoon, so he couldn't treat her too badly.

Hannah said in surprise,

"You purchasing agents really do know how to take care of yourselves."

"Fine, now that I'm half your woman, I can eat your eggs without feeling guilty."

Daniel smiled and started boiling water.

Once the steam rose, he could warm the food.

After preparing everything, he went into the main room and, as usual, took out four eggs, placing them in a bowl to fry later.

"They really are eggs!" Hannah said in amazement as she peeked inside.

Daniel laughed.

"Of course they are. Would I lie to you?"

Hannah's eyes lit up, and a smile spread across her face.

Honestly, ever since marrying into the Miller family, she had rarely eaten properly.

Any good food in the house always went first to Jack and Mrs. Miller.

After giving birth to little Henry, her chances of getting good food became even smaller.

As for little Daisy, because she was a girl, neither Mrs. Miller nor Jack cared much for her, and she rarely got anything good to eat either.

If I eat a few eggs, my milk supply should increase again, Hannah thought.

That way I can feed Henry properly when I return.

Thinking this, she shot Daniel a few annoyed glances.

This shameless man had truly taken advantage of every chance he got today.

Daniel sat in front of the stove, watching the changing expressions on her face, and asked curiously,

"What are you thinking about now?"

"Nothing… I wasn't thinking about anything," Hannah stammered, her face turning red.

Daniel looked at her deeply and sighed.

"It really pains me to watch you leave."

"Why don't we skip Carter Village tonight and go tomorrow morning instead?"

"You can simply turn back in the morning."

"I doubt you'd get anything to eat even if you went."

"And since you haven't been back in years, your parents and uncles might just mock you."

"…That…" Hannah didn't immediately refuse.

After learning that her family probably had no food either, she truly didn't want to go back anymore.

Then she thought about how difficult it still was for her to walk.

That made her even less willing to leave.

After thinking for a while, she nodded.

"Alright. I'll stay here tonight."

Daniel's face lit up with joy.

"Great!"

"Then tomorrow when you leave, I'll give you ten pounds of cornmeal to take back to your family."

"How does that sound?"

Ten pounds of cornmeal wasn't much, but if cooked into porridge it could still last several days.

Seeing the excitement on his face, Hannah understood exactly what he was thinking.

She gave a faint smile, didn't refuse, and quietly nodded.

As they talked, steam soon began rising from the pot.

Daniel quickly placed all the food into the steamer to warm it.

"Don't heat too much. We won't be able to finish it," Hannah said, feeling a little reluctant about wasting food.

Daniel laughed.

"I'll eat four, you eat six. We'll finish it."

Hannah shook her head.

"I can't eat that many. Three at most."

"Didn't you already eat lunch? Eat a little more," Daniel said with a smile.

Hannah touched her stomach.

She really was hungry, so she stopped arguing.

Daniel put the lid on the steamer, bent down to grab a small stool, and sat beside Hannah.

Hannah looked at him nervously and asked softly,

"You're not going to trouble me again tonight, are you?"

Daniel took her hands in his and played gently with her fingers.

Then he leaned closer, breathing in her familiar feminine scent, and shook his head.

"No. I just want to talk with you."

Hannah nodded quietly, then smiled and asked,

"Am I your first woman?"

Daniel smiled and nodded.

Hannah's face immediately brightened with satisfaction.

After a moment of hesitation, she pressed her lips together and said,

"We agreed that once we return to the courtyard, you can't keep bothering me."

"If I miss you, then what should I do?" Daniel asked, taking advantage of the closeness.

Hannah blushed and whispered,

"I'll come see you once every few days… around midnight. Would that be alright?"

Daniel smiled, stood up, and pulled her into his arms.

"Sister Hannah, you're too kind."

It was true what people said—

the first step was always the hardest, but once it was crossed, the second came much easier.

Hannah lightly punched him and reminded him,

"Remember, only I can come to you."

"You are not allowed to come to me, or I'll never speak to you again."

"Yes, yes, yes. I'll do whatever you say," Daniel nodded repeatedly.

Still, in his heart, he was already thinking that if he didn't go to her sometimes, she might end up angry instead.

The two embraced each other and slowly whispered sweet words into one another's ears.

These past years in the Miller family had not been kind to Hannah.

Not only had she suffered from a lack of food and clothing, but more importantly, both Mrs. Miller and Jack had terrible tempers.

So she carried many grievances in her heart.

Taking advantage of this moment, Hannah poured all her complaints out to Daniel.

The more she spoke, the lighter she felt.

The guilt she once carried toward Jack gradually faded.

Before long, the steamed buns in the pot were ready.

After taking the food out, Daniel quickly fried the eggs and reheated the leftovers.

Then he and Hannah enjoyed another delicious meal together.

"My stomach is full," Hannah said, putting down her chopsticks.

"I haven't eaten this much in so many days."

Daniel smiled.

"From now on, I'll leave a portion for you in the courtyard every day."

"If you need it, come find me in the evening."

"Can't it be during the daytime?" Hannah asked sadly.

"Just think of it as helping my family."

Daniel rolled his eyes and said irritably,

"Come on. I still need to borrow food from others in the courtyard."

"Haven't you seen me doing that all the time?"

Hannah fell silent.
