As the flames that had engulfed Kain finally flickered out, the creature that stood in their wake was undeniably transformed. Gone was the familiar figure; in its place, a new being emerged.
Two sharp, curved horns jutted from the back of his head, arching forward to frame his face. Their smooth, dark surfaces culminated in points that sparkled ominously in the dim light. The skin beneath them had darkened to a faint red, more intense than before, pulsing with a quiet vigor beneath the surface.
With a sudden flicker, his eyes shot open.
They were a brilliant crimson, not merely red but alive with an inner flame, as if an inferno danced behind them.
Kain laughed, a sound that was anything but natural, layered with multiple tones that clashed and overlapped in a disconcerting way. His laughter faded, and he muttered to himself, "Yeah, that's new."
Then came the familiar chime of a notification came.

Kain's gaze lingered on the option before him.
With a small shrug, he remarked, "Nothing good would come from devouring a human anyway," and selected it.
Immediately, he felt a foreign pressure building in his chest, then shifting deeper, as if something was forming within him where there had been emptiness before. Frowning, Kain closed his eyes, surrendering to the sensation.
He stood again in his inner world, where fire raged in every direction, unending and vibrant. In the center loomed the gate, still ensnared in chains, though now only one lock remained intact. Drawing closer, he found the lock already open. With a swift motion, he removed it, and the chain clattered to the ground, leaving the gate to creak open wider than before, unleashing a surge of demonic energy that tore past him with ferocity.
Beyond the gate, something awaited. A dense purple mass pulsating steadily, like a heartbeat. Floating beneath it was a troubled green orb, its surface bubbling faintly and giving off a noxious energy that dripped downward like putrid ooze. The stench assaulted him, it was thick and foul, and reeked of decay.
Kain stared, recognition hitting him hard.
The purple mass was his demon heart, a concentration of pure demonic energy. The green orb? The fell organ, a source of rot and corruption, something that not only killed but spread its poison.
With this knowledge flooded him. Spells, applications, methods to mold his power beyond mere force. Kain absorbed it all, learning, becoming.
Then, a sharp pain shot through him.
Sudden and jarring.
His body jerked.
Kain's eyes snapped open, finding himself on the gritty ground, having been dragged back several meters, the earth churned from the force of the impact. Struggling to push himself up, he spotted a figure standing before him, a man clad in silvery gold armor, divine energy radiating from him effortlessly.
"So," the knight stated coolly, raising his sword, "you are the creature that has been plaguing the palace."
Kain released a slow breath, a smile curling his lips. "Plaguing? That sounds a bit dramatic."
The knight was unresponsive, instead swinging his sword, unleashing a wave of golden energy that tore through the air towards Kain.
Reacting swiftly, Kain twisted aside, narrowly avoiding the strike as it carved through the ground behind him. The knight was already in motion again, closing the distance in a heartbeat, his blade descending in a crisp arc. Kain bent backward at an awkward angle, the sword missing his face by mere inches. Clumsily effective.
With a burst of adrenaline, Kain's fist shot forward, connecting solidly with the knight and sending him flipping through the air before crashing down and skidding across the ground.
"Now we're even," Kain said, watching the wound on his abdomen knit itself back together, flesh mending before his eyes.
Raising his hand, he conjured a spear formed of demonic energy, its surface flickering with unstable power.
With a sudden flash, Kain vanished, reappearing directly in front of the knight. He thrust the spear forward, and though the knight twisted just enough to deflect it, the weapon grazed his chest plate, scorching the surface.
The knight turned his head slightly as Kain called upon the heat. A fireball struck with a deafening roar, shattering his helmet and sending the knight staggering backward, flames licking at his face.
As metal clattered to the ground, Kain's eyes widened in recognition.
"Marcus," he grinned.
Hastening his movement, Kain's fist slammed into Marcus's stomach, doubling him over and sending him crashing to the earth. Gasping for air, Marcus found himself kicked down harder, the glow of healing magic beginning to envelop him.
Kain's expression twisted as he observed the golden light. "No, no," he said, a hint of amusement in his voice, as he grabbed Marcus by the face.
His hand burst into purple flames that danced against the golden light. Once again, Marcus screamed, held firm by an invisible force that rendered him helpless.
Above, the sky reacted, clouds gathering, heavy and oppressive. Thunder rolled ominously as a pillar of golden light descended from above, engulfing Marcus entirely.
Kain jumped back instinctively, his skin scorching from the heat of the divine light. He watched as Marcus rose slowly, his eyes glowing with an otherworldly gold, transformed.
"Demon," the voice that emerged was deeper now, layered with something. "Your desecration of this land ends here."
Kain tilted his head. "You're not Marcus anymore, are you?"
"Return to whichever of the three barons sent you."
Kain chuckled softly. "No."
In an instant, the being moved, Kain moving to meet him. They collided, fists clashing in the center as the ground beneath them shattered, a crater forming from the force of their impact. A shockwave erupted outward, flattening what little of the ruins remained.
Their battle raged on, blow after blow, each one faster than the last, sparks flying as golden light met purple energy, each strike cracking the air with tension. Kain fought with instinctive movements, every counter rough yet effective, while the being attacked with precision, calculated to end the conflict.
"Now you hit harder than your friemd here," Kain laughed, enjoying the thrill of the combat.
In that moment, a golden blade formed in the being's hand and swung toward him. Kain blocked it with a surge of demonic energy, tumbling back from the force, his arms burning from the contact.
Grinning wider than before, he lunged again, claws outstretched.
They found flesh.
Golden light erupted as the being staggered, allowing Kain to close in, relentless. He formed another spear, driving it forward.
This time, it pierced through the chest.
For a fleeting moment, silence enveloped them. The light flickered, then faded, and the fierce presence behind Marcus's eyes vanished, his body going still.
Breathing slowly, Kain stood before the lifeless form, only to feel a stirring above, an awareness, more than one gaze upon him, coming from the heavens.
Frowning slightly, Kain reached out.
A soul soared upward. It was massive, brighter than any he had ever encountered—pure and golden, yet weighted with a resistance that made him hesitate for the briefest moment.
Instead, he stored it, firm in his resolve. The attention lingered, then a voice spoke, cold and distant. "The heavens will remember this."
Kain looked up, his expression shifting with intrigue. "The war upon this world will resume."
Then silence followed.
Then another voice broke through, loud and mocking. "Oh, we'll be waiting."
The very sky seemed to tremble beneath its weight.
"Let them come," the voice continued, its laughter echoing with anticipation before it landed squarely on Kain. "Good."
Kain's grin returned as the voice commanded, "Open the gate in the mountains. Let us in. This world has been far too quiet, it is time to settle this war with the high heavens"
The presence withdrew, leaving Kain standing amidst the wreckage, pondering his actions.
With a slow exhale, he surveyed the ruins, now more ravaged than ever, barely a remnant of what once stood tall. Without a second thought, he willed himself upward.
Wings, dark and powerful, erupted from his back. With a flap, then another, he took to the skies, vanishing from sight as he soared toward the palace.
