The old Toyota van sat in the shadows of the colonial building's garage, its white paint covered in a layer of dust and dried mud.
To a normal observer, it was just a piece of junk.
But to Ethan Jae Park, it was a "Spatial Vessel."
He stood at the back of the van, his hands resting on the cold metal. The High-Grade Ether Core was now mounted inside a custom-built spatial anchor in the center of the vehicle.
[Universal Logic Engine: Active.]
[Scanning Vessel Integrity...]
[Compatibility: 84%.]
It'll hold, Ethan thought. As long as I don't push the speed past eighty kilometers per hour, the spatial fold will remain stable.
"Ethan, are you sure about this?" Krishara asked. She was sitting in the passenger seat, her hands glowing with a faint emerald light as she "wove" a layer of life-force over the van's engine. "If the Overseer sees us moving, it'll vaporize this entire block."
"It won't see us, Krish," Ethan said, climbing into the driver's seat. "I've used the Universal Logic Engine to calculate the Overseer's 'Refresh Rate.' It scans this sector every forty-two seconds. I've synchronized our spatial cloak to 'flicker' at the exact same frequency. To the System, we're just a static piece of the background."
He turned the key. The engine sputtered, then roared to life, its sound muffled by the spatial barrier Ethan had wrapped around the exhaust.
"Nethan, stay in the back," Ethan commanded. "If the barrier fails, I need you to expand your Absolute Layer to cover the entire van. Can you do that?"
The boy nodded, his small face set in a mask of grim determination. He was sitting on a pile of blankets, his hands already shimmering with the grey light of the Iron Guard.
"I'm ready, Appachchi."
Ethan shifted into gear and drove out of the garage.
The streets of Nawala were a nightmare. Abandoned cars were piled up like barricades, and the asphalt was cracked and pitted from the emergence of rifts. But through the Universal Logic Engine, Ethan didn't see the chaos. He saw a "Path of Least Resistance."
Glowing blue lines appeared on the windshield, showing him the exact route to take to avoid the "Detection Cones" of the monsters roaming the streets.
Turn left in fifty meters. Avoid the crater. Maintain constant velocity.
They moved like ghosts through the ruins of the city. They passed a pack of wolf-spiders tearing into a bus, but the creatures didn't even look up. To them, the van didn't exist.
But as they reached the bridge leading out of the Colombo district toward the Kandy road, the blue lines on the windshield suddenly turned blood-red.
[WARNING: SYSTEM TOLL DETECTED.]
[ENTITY: BRIDGE GATEKEEPER (STAGE 2 / ELITE)]
[LEVEL: 15]
Ethan slammed on the brakes, the van skidding to a halt just meters away from the bridge's entrance.
In the center of the road stood a massive, four-armed giant made of rusted iron and glowing blue Ether. It held a massive cleaver in each hand, and its single, glowing eye was fixed on the road.
["Halt, Travelers."]
The voice wasn't spoken; it was a vibration that rattled the van's windows.
["The System demands a Life Tax. Pay in Ether Cores, or pay in blood."]
"Ethan…" Krishara whispered, her hand gripping the dashboard. "It can see us. The cloak didn't work."
"The cloak worked fine," Ethan hissed, his eyes glowing with a fierce violet light. "But the bridge is a 'Hard-Coded' checkpoint. The System doesn't need to 'see' us to know we're here. The moment we touched the bridge's spatial coordinates, we triggered the toll.
"He looked at the Gatekeeper. Level 15. Stage 2.
My INT is 40. My Ether is 400, Ethan calculated. If I fight it alone, I have a 54% chance of victory. But if we fight as a unit...
"Krishara! Nethan! Out of the van! Now!"
They scrambled out just as the Gatekeeper raised one of its massive cleavers.
"Universal Logic Engine: Structural Analysis!"
Ethan's vision shifted. The giant wasn't a solid object anymore. It was a series of glowing blue nodes connected by lines of force.
There, Ethan thought. The 'Anchor Point' is in its left knee. If I can disrupt the flow of Ether there, the entire structure will collapse.
"Nethan! Front and center! Absolute Layer: Maximum Expansion!"
The boy ran forward, his small body glowing with a blinding grey light. He slammed his hands into the asphalt, and a massive, diamond-hard barrier erupted, covering the entire width of the road.
CLANG.
The Gatekeeper's cleaver struck the barrier with the force of a falling building. The shockwave shattered the windows of the nearby shops, but Nethan didn't move. His Iron Guard talent was absorbing the impact, his small feet sinking inches into the concrete as he held the line.
"Krishara! Disrupt its flow! Now!"
Krishara stepped out from behind the barrier, her hands weaving a complex pattern in the air.
"Vital Weave: Ether Interference!"
She didn't attack the giant directly. Instead, she sent a pulse of emerald energy into the ground, targeting the "Life-Force" of the Ether that powered the Gatekeeper.
The giant's movements slowed. Its glowing blue eye flickered, the light dimming as Krishara's weave began to "tangle" its internal energy.
[Gatekeeper Stability: 72%... 64%...]
"My turn," Ethan whispered.
He didn't use "Space Compression." He didn't have the Ether to spare.
Instead, he used the Universal Logic Engine to calculate a "Spatial Needle."
He focused all of his remaining Ether into a single, microscopic point at the tip of his finger.
"Space Piercing: Anchor Strike."
He didn't throw it. He "folded" the space between his finger and the Gatekeeper's left knee, making the distance zero.
The microscopic point of infinite pressure struck the anchor node.
There was no explosion. Just a soft tink sound.
The Gatekeeper's left leg suddenly vanished, its Ether structure unraveling like a pulled thread. The massive giant tilted, its balance destroyed.
[Gatekeeper Stability: 0%.]
[System Error: Entity Unstable.]
With a final, grinding sound of metal on metal, the Gatekeeper collapsed into a pile of rusted iron and fading blue light.

Ethan slumped against the side of the van, his breath coming in ragged gasps.
[Ether: 5/400]
"We did it," Nethan cheered, his grey glow fading as he ran back to Ethan. "Did you see that, Appachchi? I held him!"
"I saw it, Nethan," Ethan said, a rare, genuine smile touching his lips. "You were perfect."
He looked at Krishara. She was pale, her hands trembling from the effort of the weave, but she was smiling too.
"We're a good team, Ethan," she said.
"We're the only team that matters," Ethan replied.
He looked at his status window. Level 10. He had reached the first major milestone.
