Chapter 14 - Chapter 13: A Helping Hand

Adrian sat in his office, reviewing a document he hadn't really read.

The words blurred together on the page.

Numbers.

Reports.

Signatures.

None of it fully registering.

His thoughts were elsewhere.

Specifically—

on a small hospital room.

A sick woman.

A younger brother trying to be strong.

And a girl who smiled too easily—

as if smiling could hold the world together.

"…Unnecessary," he muttered under his breath.

But even as he said it—

his hand reached for his phone.

Without hesitation.

Without doubt.

"Handle a hospital bill," he said calmly. "Full coverage."

"Yes, sir."

"No names attached."

A brief pause.

"Understood."

The line went quiet.

Adrian ended the call and set the phone down.

Then leaned back in his chair, staring at nothing in particular.

"This changes nothing."

His voice was firm.

Controlled.

As if stating it out loud would make it true.

But deep down—

he knew.

It already had.

That evening—

Lina stood at the hospital counter, her fingers nervously gripping a folded paper.

Her heart pounded lightly in her chest.

"Miss Reyes?" the receptionist asked.

"Yes…"

The woman checked something on her screen.

"The bill has already been settled."

Lina blinked.

"…What?"

"Paid in full."

The words didn't register at first.

They felt distant.

Unreal.

"…That's not possible," Lina said quickly, her voice tightening. "There must be a mistake—"

"There's no mistake."

The receptionist's tone was calm.

Certain.

Final.

Lina stood there, frozen in place.

Her mind struggled to catch up.

Her thoughts scattered.

Confusion.

Shock.

Relief.

Suspicion.

"…Who paid it?" she asked, her voice softer now.

The receptionist gave a polite, apologetic look.

"I'm sorry. It was anonymous."

Anonymous.

The word echoed.

Again.

And again.

Lina slowly stepped back from the counter, her mind already searching.

Eliminating possibilities.

Family? No.

They didn't have the means.

Friends? None who could handle something like this.

There was only—

One person.

But no.

That couldn't be it.

He said he wanted distance.

He said—

Her thoughts stopped.

Her breath caught slightly.

Her mind flashed back—

to calm eyes.

To a quiet voice.

To someone who rarely did things without reason.

"…No way…" she whispered to herself.

But even as she denied it—

a part of her already knew.

And that realization didn't bring confusion.

It brought something far more complicated.

Something quiet.

Something warm.

Something that made her chest tighten in a way she couldn't ignore.

Because if it was him—

then it meant something had changed.

And if it had—

then maybe…

so had everything else.
