Toji in this story isn't just another strong character; not just another simple self-insert, which changes how he should be understood. He represents a idealized version of a person placed into a harsh and complex world, not simply to control its events by some means or another, but to navigate it intelligently. His core traits: calculated thinking, emotional control, and a commanding presence reflect a desire for agency and awareness in a world of overwhelming power. This positioning transforms Toji into a lens through which the established world of One Piece is reinterpreted.
The success of this character stems from the avoidance of common tropes. Toji is not written as a purely noble or morally perfect figure. With him lying, manipulating, and enabling morally questionable figures like Doctor Hill, the narrative gains weight and realism. He operates on the understanding that the world is not divided into simple binaries of good and evil.
Despite possessing significant power and meta-knowledge, Toji does not recklessly disrupt the timeline. He allows events to unfold where necessary if he has something to gain. This elevates him above the "brute-force" solutions common in the genre, reinforcing his identity as a strategist rather than a mere disruptor.
The Custodian and the Leviathan had made their arrival in the desert kingdom with discretion. Both ships, and the men who commanded them, took deliberate precautions, ensuring their massive warships neither anchored at public ports nor strayed within sight of any major harbor.
Instead, they found refuge within a secluded natural bay, close enough to Nanohana for swift movement, yet distant enough to remain concealed, an unseen presence along the coast, waiting just beyond the notice of the world; it was perfect.
Night had already fallen, yet the changing of the hour did nothing to slow their momentum in duty. Lanterns were dimmed, sails furled, and the soft groan of anchored ships gave way to a tense, purposeful stillness. Reaching Alabasta had been the easier part now came the true challenge; uncovering the other threads of information hidden within the kingdom, and resolving the crisis tightening its grip, and locating its missing princess.
Nanohana lay ahead, but not without effort. The journey inland would demand either horse or foot across the unforgiving desert. Smoker, ever practical, chose his custom-built bike, the machine growling softly as he prepared to set off .
Toji, Bradley, and Ichimaru required no such instruments for travel as they solely often relied on their physical prowess to move quickly over short distances, though as shown by Toji they could travel over vast open areas.
Toji stood at the edge of the deck, stripped of his Marine insignia. He wore a fitted white shirt beneath a light beige cloak, his hood already drawn. Going forward, he was no Rear Admiral or marine but just another normal traveler. It was night now, but he knew that once the sun reached its zenith tomorrow, a dark suit would be a death sentence in this climate, plus it made one stand out and he wasn't looking forward to that. They had dressed for the heat.
"The deployment teams and scouts are ready," Pryde reported from behind him. "Minimal personnel as you requested, just our best. No visible uniforms , nor highlighted markings. We'll pass through the kingdom like ghosts."
"Thats quite good Lieutenant Pryde," Toji nodded, his gaze fixed on the infinite horizon of sand.
In his old life, he had never stepped foot in a desert. Now, he was about to walk into the heart of one. How lucky he was. He'd appreciated this adventure and journey for what it was.
Bradley stepped forward, adjusting his gloves out of habit .
"I never did care for the heat," he muttered under his breath, more to himself than anyone else. A faint exhale followed, equal parts resignation and resolve. "But alas… let's have it done."
"No one likes the heat," He said simply. "But as you say, let's end this farce and leave."
Ichimaru chuckled from behind, the black-and-red hilt of his katana resting on his hip. "My, my… it feels like it's been months since we last sneaked into a kingdom like thieves."
"Never voice it in such a way, I hate doing such things" Bradley grumbled as his pride was seemingly hit by what they were doing.
The boats made little sound as they cut through the dark water toward shore. Oars dipped and rose in steady rhythm, each stroke swallowing what little noise remained beneath the vast stillness of the sea. Within minutes, wood scraped against sand, and the men disembarked in practiced silence.
Toji was the last to step off.
His boots sank slightly into the fine grains as he steadied himself on land. The wind met him differently here—nothing like the open sea breeze they had just left behind. This was less cold, but drier and more restless, threading across the dunes in faint, whispering currents that seemed almost alive in the night.
He inhaled deeply and looked over quiet sandy terrain that was on the borders off being brought to ruin by crocodile .
A faint, almost detached thought crossed him...sharp and strangely out of place. Anakin Skywalker would have absolutely hated this place.
"Teams Alpha, Beta, and Gamma," Bradley began, his voice cutting cleanly through the low desert wind as he addressed the assembled men. "Avoid all marked settlements unless explicitly ordered otherwise. Keep your Den Den Mushis close, and engage only if absolutely necessary. For now, our mission is simple: establish a local base of operations from which we will observe and report. Nothing more, until the order for action is given."
His gaze swept over them, steady and unyielding.
"Is that understood?"
A unified response rose from the ranks, sharp and disciplined in the night air.
"Yes, sir."
Bradley's eyes shifted toward Smoker.
He was already seated on his bike, arms folded across his chest, posture rigid in that familiar, brooding way. A faint grimace sat on his face, less frustration, more reluctance at whatever was sailing through his mind. The engine idled beneath him, a low mechanical growl cutting softly through the silence .
Smoker commanded Team Gamma, forty men in total, Tashigi among them. Their destination was Nanohana, the first major point of contact inland, and a important source for information they would be able to pull in this kingdom.
Bradley held his gaze there a moment longer, as if judging unspoken concerns, before returning to the wider formation.
Bradley took Team Beta, destined for Rainbase to eye Crocodile's base of operations. Team Alpha, under Pryde, would head for the capital, Alubarna.
The remaining forty, Toji's personal escort would shadow the Rear Admiral, where ever he'd go. The location was still not made clear to the rest.
"So, where are we headed, dear leader?" Ichimaru asked, his tone light but his eyes sharp, the fox faced man was going with Toji as he reserved to follow him instead of going off on his own.
Toji didn't answer immediately. He already knew.
Rainbase. Crocodile. The casino. Alubarna. The truth buried beneath a kingdom slowly choking under its own illusion.
Toji knew the shape of the script...every step of it, every turning point that mattered—but experience had taught him something far more valuable than foresight. You did not rush the ending. You did not force the board before it was ready.
That was how control slipped.
That was how you lost everything.
So he stayed still in the present moment, plotting and scheming on his moves.
"Bradley, you're not going to Rainbase," Toji said finally. "Captain Kira from the Leviathan can handle your team. You're coming with us to Nanohana."
Bradley's eyes flicked toward him, measuring the order with a slow, analytical calm. "Are you sure about that?" he asked, curiosity threading through his tone.
"You doubt my reasoning too much, Heinkel."
"Because your reasoning is bollocks half the time," Bradley replied without hesitation. "I just need to be sure."
"Half true," he thought to himself, though the thought carried no doubt.
"There are things the four of us need to see personally," Toji said smoothly, the lie wrapped neatly in certainty. "I won't have us split up unless it becomes necessary."
Smoker exhaled through his nose. "The other teams are already moving. Can we go?" He urged.
Without looking up, Toji adjusted the strap of the Inverted Spear beneath his cloak, the motion subtle but deliberate.
He nodded to the latter.
"We'll see you in town then, Smoker," he said at last.
Without another word, Gin took to the sky first using Geppo, kicking the air as if it were solid ground. Bradley and Toji followed, their silhouettes looking supernatural as they sprinted across the sky. They didn't want to waste time on horses; the few mounts they had were better used by the other teams to carry food and water across the vast wastes.
Smoker revved his bike and ignored Ichimaru's taunts. The forty scouts began a steady, enhanced pace towards the city, leaving the remaining forty men to begin the hour-long trek on foot.
"Five rooms for me and my companions, please."
The old man behind the desk looked up, irritation already creasing his weathered face at the sight of cloaked figures. Only the young man at the front was clearly visible.
"There's only two of ya," the innkeeper rasped.
"The rest will arrive shortly, I assure you." Toji placed 1,000 Berries on the counter.
The reaction was immediate. The annoyance drained from the man's expression, replaced almost shamefully by eagerness as he scooped up the money.
"Five good rooms, right away! Upstairs, left side!"
He slid the keys across without hesitation.
Toji took them calmly—three for himself, Gin, and Bradley, and the remaining two for Tashigi and Smoker.
As they turned to leave, the innkeeper's gaze snagged briefly on Gin. The man had tilted his hood just enough for a glimpse—just enough to reveal that fox-like, unsettling grin beneath.
The innkeeper visibly recoiled.
"There's a tavern three blocks down," he added quickly, suddenly far too helpful. "Best food and wine in town."
"I thank you, my friend," Toji replied evenly, already moving toward the stairs with his companions in tow.
