Chapter 25 - Chapter 25: Bargaining

Scholar Vane walked slowly beneath the shadow of the great iron portcullis. She ignored the heavily armed men of the Walderose garrison entirely. Her attention was anchored to the massive, obsidian-black carapace of the Abyssal Weaver mounted above the gate.

She raised her slender staff of white ash. The uncut crystal at its apex pulsed with a rhythm that made the air hum, a sound like a swarm of angry hornets.

"The chitin is charred from the inside out," Vane observed softly. Her voice echoed in the minds of everyone in the courtyard, bypassing their ears entirely. "A normal fire cannot melt Abyssal hide. The amount of raw energy required... Aether had to have been weaponized and injected directly into the beast's central nervous system."

She lowered the staff and turned her blind, violet eyes toward the gathered household.

"Where is the mage, Lord Aldous?" she asked. The temperature in the yard plummeted. "If you are hiding a hedge-wizard or an exiled scholar, produce them before me immediately. The penalty for harboring an unsanctioned channeler is the eradication of your bloodline."

Aldous stepped forward, his hand resting instinctively on the pommel of his sword. "There is no mage within these walls, Arbiter. My sergeant and my son's guard crippled the beast. It was my son who delivered the killing blow with a Veridian shortsword."

Vane tilted her head. She looked at Sergeant Garrick, dismissing him instantly. She looked at Kaelen, lingering for a fraction of a second on the coiled, lethal tension of the girl's posture, before dismissing her as well.

Then, her gaze fell upon Seiyuu.

The eight-year-old boy stood perfectly still near the training posts. Vane drifted across the frozen mud of the courtyard, her purple robes whispering against the earth. She stopped three paces from him. The oppressive, gravitational weight of her raw power washed over Seiyuu, threatening to drive him to his knees. He locked his joints and forced himself to meet her terrifying gaze.

Vane reached out. She did not touch him, but she traced a finger through the air inches from his chest.

"Scribe Vance visited this keep many years ago," Vane murmured, her violet eyes narrowing. "He filed a report in the capital archives. He noted a newborn heir with an unusual soul. We assumed it was merely a noble with high potential for the Awakening. We were mistaken."

She lowered her hand, a look of profound, chilling fascination spreading across her pale features.

"Your channels are scorched," the Arbiter stated. "Covered in thick, fresh scar tissue. You drew the raw firmament of the world into an unawakened vessel, and yet survived. So you must me the source of that magic"

The courtyard erupted into chaos. Aldous shouted in denial, stepping forward to put himself between the Arbiter and his son. Garrick drew his blade half an inch from its scabbard. Kaelen's hand vanished behind her back, her fingers wrapping around the hilt of a throwing knife.

Vane did not even look at them. She simply tapped the butt of her staff against the frozen mud.

A wave of kinetic force exploded outward. It was invisible, silent, and absolutely overwhelming. Aldous, Garrick, and Kaelen were instantly frozen in place, their bodies locked in rigid paralysis by a binding spell of immense power. They could breathe, but they could not move a single muscle.

"Illegal channeling before the tenth name-day is forbidden, for good reason" Vane said softly, looking only at Seiyuu. "The Spire does not tolerate volatile anomalies. Normally the punishment would be a death sentence."

Seiyuu looked at his paralyzed father. He looked at the vast, insurmountable gulf in power between himself and the Arbiter. He could not fight her. A blade was useless against a woman who could kill everyone here with a flick of her wrist.

He had to do what he did best. He had to negotiate.

"A death sentence is a waste of a valuable asset, Arbiter Vane," Seiyuu said.

He forced his breathing into an even rhythm, though every instinct in his body screamed at him to flee. The pressure radiating from Scholar Vane was like standing at the edge of an abyss and feeling the void pull back.

Vane paused. The crystal on her staff dimmed slightly. The sheer incongruity of an eight-year-old boy speaking to her with such calmness caught her off guard.

"An asset?" Vane echoed, a humorless smile touching her lips. "Raw channeling without formal awakening should have reduced your nervous system to ash. Yet your body adapted." She stopped before him again. "That makes you either an unprecedented prodigy… or a dangerous aberration.

"I am a survivor," Seiyuu corrected. He clasped his hands behind his back, mimicking the posture he had seen corporate executives use to project confidence. "I circulated raw Aether through unsealed channels and did not shatter. I slew a severe Abyssal threat. The Spire thrives on cultivating power. You can execute me and gain nothing, or you can acquire a prodigy."

Vane studied him for a long, silent moment. The violet fire in her eyes seemed to churn, evaluating the brutal logic of his words.

You propose a bargain," she finally said.

"I propose an investment," Seiyuu replied. "I will submit to the authority of the Spire. I will leave the Ironfall Valley and enter your custody. In exchange, you will guarantee the survival of my house."

Vane raised a slender eyebrow. She lifted her staff, releasing the kinetic binding on the courtyard. Aldous stumbled forward, gasping for breath, while Kaelen dropped to one knee, her chest heaving.

"Inside," Vane commanded, turning toward the keep.

The negotiations took place in the master solar. The atmosphere was incredibly tense. Lord Aldous and Lady Elara stood by the hearth, their faces pale with horror at the prospect of surrendering their only son. Kaelen stood by the door, her eyes fixed on the Arbiter.

Seiyuu sat across the heavy oak desk from Scholar Vane. He was bartering with his own life, but he treated the exchange with clinical detachment.

"The Spire will claim guardianship of you," Vane stated, her voice carrying the absolute authority of the Veridian Crown. "You are too dangerous to remain unmonitored in the wilderness. We will grant you until your ninth name-day to put your affairs in order. A carriage will arrive to transport you to the capital."

"And the Awakening?" Seiyuu asked. He knew his tenth Name-Day was the true crucible.

"You will be housed in the initiates' wing," Vane explained. "When your tenth year arrives, the High Masters will personally guide your channels through the unsealing. If you survive, you will be enrolled in the Veridian Mage Academy. You will serve the Spire."

"I will study at the Academy," Seiyuu countered smoothly. "But my allegiance remains to House Walderose. I will remain in the capital until my sixteenth Name-Day. Once I graduate and receive my formal sanctions as a full mage, I return to this valley."

Vane scoffed softly. "You demand a great deal of freedom for an unsanctioned criminal."

"I am just requesting fair treatment proportional to my potential," Seiyuu replied, leaning forward slightly. "If I am to spend seven years acting on the interests of the Spire, my family requires compensation. House Walderose must be placed under the protection of the Arch-Dukes. If Darius Castellan or any other lord attempts to cross our borders, the Spire will intervene."

Aldous stared at his son in stunned silence. The boy was securing the family a shield amidst this crisis. A decree of protection from the Spire was worth more than a thousand heavy cavalry. Darius Castellan would not dare lay a finger on the western ridge if it meant incurring the wrath of the capital's mages.

Vane drummed her pale fingers against the oak desk. She recognized the intelligence behind the boy's eyes. He was offering himself as a hostage to secure his family's prosperity. It was a remarkably clever calculation.

"The Spire accepts the burden of protection," Vane agreed, her violet eyes gleaming with a predatory satisfaction. "House Walderose will be untouchable until your graduation. However, you will travel to the capital alone. A mage must sever their earthly attachments."

"No," Seiyuu said instantly. The word hung heavy in the solar.

He pointed toward the door, indicating the silent girl in the boiled leather armor.

"Kaelen accompanies me," Seiyuu demanded. "She is my sworn shield. The capital is a viper's nest of noble politics and rival factions. I require a guard who operates outside the jurisdiction of your academy instructors. After all I am just a child"

Vane looked at Kaelen. The Arbiter's eyes narrowed as she processed the lethal stillness of the young assassin.

"A single bodyguard," Vane mused. "Very well. She may accompany you, provided she does not interfere with your instruction."

Vane stood up. She reached into the folds of her purple robes and produced a heavy medallion of polished silver, stamped with the sigil of a towering spire surrounded by stars. She placed it upon the desk.

"The pact is sealed, Seiyuu Walderose," the Arbiter declared. "You have a few months left. Spend them well. When the carriage arrives, your childhood ends entirely."

Vane did not wait for a dismissal. She turned and swept from the solar, her footsteps making no sound against the stone floor. A few moments later, the heavy iron gates of the keep ground open, and the black destrier carried the Arbiter away into the frozen mist.

The solar remained deathly quiet.

Elara broke the silence. She rushed forward and pulled Seiyuu into a desperate, weeping embrace. Aldous stepped up behind them, resting a heavy, trembling hand on his son's shoulder.

"You have sold yourself to the capital," Aldous whispered, his voice cracking with a mixture of grief and awe. "Bought this family and house safety on your expense..."

Seiyuu rested his head against his mother's shoulder.

He had not sold himself. He had simply changed his game plans. The Ironfall Valley was a minor frontier, suffocated by lords fighting over scraps of copper and grain. The true power of the kingdom rested in the capital. The Spire held the secrets of the Aether and the keys to his inevitable conquests.
