Chapter 451 - The Wolf Pack's Prey, The Hunting Team Dispatched

Chapter 451: The Wolf Pack's Prey, The Hunting Team Dispatched

Konoha Frontline Headquarters.

Jiraiya stood on the elevated ridge of the encampment, the heavy wind snapping his white hair around his face. He lowered his brass telescope, clicking his tongue in sheer annoyance at the endless, towering earthen walls dominating the distant horizon.

"That old fossil Ōnoki... is he part tortoise?" Jiraiya muttered, scratching his chin. "With a shell that thick, a direct assault would just be throwing our men into a meat grinder. The casualties would be astronomical."

Beside him, Uchiha Fugaku stood entirely motionless. His arms were crossed over his chest armor, his dark eyes cold and unreadable.

"He is stalling for time," Fugaku stated, his voice a low, flat baritone. "He wants to bleed us dry in a war of attrition."

At that moment, the heavy canvas flap of the command tent was swept open.

Nara Shikaku stepped out into the fading light, a freshly deciphered intelligence scroll gripped tightly in his hand.

"My Lords."

Shikaku spread the map and the attached missive across the wooden tactical table.

"According to the latest joint reconnaissance from the Hyuga and Aburame scout units..." He traced a line across the map. "The allied forces have splintered. Twenty-three elite squads have completely bypassed the main theater of war. They are attempting to infiltrate the heart of the Land of Fire through our blind flanks."

"Their objectives are clear."

"Sever our supply lines, sow mass panic among the civilian populace, and..."

Shikaku's finger tapped a specific marker on the map—the location of the Land of Fire's capital.

"Assassinate the Daimyo."

Hearing this, Jiraiya let out a harsh, barking laugh.

"That old fox Ōnoki really is clicking his abacus loud enough for the whole world to hear." The Sannin's smile faded into a dangerous smirk. "A pity. He doesn't realize the current Land of Fire is no longer the leaky sieve it used to be."

Fugaku turned away from the table. His gaze swept over the assembled ranks of the Uchiha Clan waiting in the staging area below—dozens of elite shinobi, fully geared, their faces shadowed by high collars, radiating a chilling, disciplined bloodlust.

"Pass down the order."

Fugaku's voice did not rise in volume, yet it carried an unquestionable, iron-blooded weight that demanded absolute obedience.

"The hunt begins."

"Let those self-righteous fools learn."

"Who the real hunters are."

...Land of Fire Border, the Mist Forest.

This dense, ancient woodland was a mandatory choke point for anyone attempting to slip into the heartland of the Land of Fire. Year-round, a suffocating, milky-white fog choked the air, reducing visibility to a mere five meters and dampening all sound.

Swish! Swish! Swish!

A dozen dark silhouettes tore through the canopy at breakneck speed.

Clad in the standard single-strapped flak jackets of Kumogakure, they moved with predatory agility, their boots touching down on the mossy bark without making a single sound.

At the vanguard, the leading Kumogakure Jonin, Motoi, suddenly threw up his right hand in a sharp, cutting motion.

The entire squad halted instantly. Twelve bodies froze in mid-motion, adhering to the massive tree trunks like iron nails driven into wood.

"What is it, Captain?" a team member whispered, his breath pluming in the damp air.

Motoi's brow furrowed deeply, his dark eyes darting through the impenetrable fog. A deep-seated unease gnawed at his gut.

"It's too quiet."

"Not even the sound of a bird call."

As an elite Jonin of the Hidden Cloud, Motoi possessed an almost beast-like intuition for danger. Right now, the very air of this forest felt heavy, pressing against his skin like a physical threat.

"Is there a situation?"

At the rear guard, a sensory ninja pressed two fingers together, closing his eyes to cast his perception outward. After several agonizing seconds, he opened them and shook his head.

"Captain, within a one-kilometer radius, there are absolutely no chakra reactions."

"Only some wild beasts."

Hearing this, Darui, positioned near the center of the formation, let out a slow, quiet exhale, the tension bleeding slightly from his shoulders.

Perhaps he was just wound too tight. After all, this mission was a deep dive behind enemy lines, a life-or-death gamble where a single mistake meant annihilation.

"Continue advancing."

"Speed up, pass through this forest; the Land of Fire's primary supply station is just ahead."

The Kumogakure squad blurred into motion once more.

However.

They were completely oblivious to their surroundings.

High above their heads, nestled deep within the thick foliage, several inconspicuous black Kikaichū rested quietly on the damp leaves. Their tiny antennae twitched rhythmically, silently transmitting signals.

And in a hollowed-out tree trunk a hundred meters away.

An Aburame Clan Jonin adjusted the dark sunglasses resting on the bridge of his nose.

"Target confirmed."

"Kumogakure elite infiltration squad, twelve people."

"One Jonin, three Special Jonin, eight Chunin."

Beside him.

A ninja from the Hyuga branch family stood perfectly still. The veins around his temples bulged grotesquely, his pale Byakugan piercing straight through the dense wood and fog, locked entirely onto the Kumogakure squad.

"Position confirmed."

In the deepest, darkest corner of the tree hollow.

A man wearing the high-collared, dark blue mantle of the Uchiha Clan slowly opened his eyes.

In the pitch-black space, a pair of crimson eyes flared to life. Three black tomoe spun lazily around the pupils, casting a sinister, blood-red glow.

Uchiha Engetsu.

An elite Jonin of the Uchiha Clan's execution unit.

He reached over his shoulder, his gloved hand wrapping around the hilt of his ninjatō. As he slowly drew the weapon, the pitch-black, non-reflective blade seemed to swallow the meager light.

"Twelve people, huh?"

Engetsu licked his lower lip, a cruel, razor-sharp smile curving his features.

"Just enough for a warm-up."

"Do it."

...Back in the forest.

Motoi's heart suddenly hammered against his ribs.

That lingering sense of danger hadn't faded—it had violently spiked, making the hairs on the back of his neck stand on end. His scalp prickled with the sheer intensity of the killing intent locking onto him.

"Something's wrong!"

"Retreat!!"

Motoi roared, his pupils contracting. His body reacted purely on instinct, violently launching himself backward off the branch.

Almost at the exact same time.

The massive branch they had just been using as a foothold violently detonated.

A blinding, roaring dragon of pure, superheated flame plummeted from the upper canopy, its jaws unhinging to consume everything in its path.

"Fire Release: Great Dragon Fire Technique!!"

The terrifying, searing heat instantly flash-evaporated the surrounding mist, turning the air into a suffocating steam bath.

Two Kumogakure Chunin, their reactions a fraction of a second too slow, didn't even have the chance to scream. The fire dragon swallowed them whole, incinerating their flesh and reducing them to blackened, crumbling charcoal before they even hit the forest floor.

"Enemy attack!!"

"Scatter!!"

While still suspended in mid-air, Motoi's hands blurred through a rapid sequence of hand seals. He inhaled sharply, his chest expanding.

"Lightning Release: Wave of Inspiration!"

A crackling, high-voltage current of raw lightning erupted from his mouth, sweeping outward to intercept the lingering flames.

But the very next second.

Countless shuriken tore through the steam from every conceivable blind spot.

Each spinning blade was tethered to a nearly invisible, razor-thin steel wire.

"Manipulated Shuriken Technique!"

Clang! Clang! Clang!

Sparks showered the forest canopy as the surviving Kumogakure shinobi frantically brandished their kunai, desperately parrying the incoming barrage.

But those shuriken moved as if possessed by vengeful spirits. They ricocheted off one another in mid-air, colliding and violently altering their trajectories in physically impossible ways.

A Kumogakure Special Jonin gasped as a steel wire whipped around his throat, pulling taut with a sickening crunch.

Before he could even reach up to break free.

A dark shadow materialized directly behind his back.

A singular flash of cold, dark steel.

A head separated from its shoulders, spinning into the abyss below.

Uchiha Engetsu stood on the blood-slicked branch, casually flicking his wrist to snap the crimson droplets off his black blade. His Three-Tomoe Sharingan locked onto the remaining Kumo shinobi, his gaze dripping with absolute disdain.

"This is the elite of Kumogakure?"

Motoi landed heavily on a lower bough. Seeing three of his subordinates slaughtered in the blink of an eye, his eyes flooded with bloodshot fury.

"Uchiha..."

He recognized those cursed, blood-red eyes.

And he recognized the iconic red-and-white fan crest emblazoned proudly on the killer's back.

"Don't panic!"

"There aren't many of them!"

"Form up! Counterattack!"

The surviving Kumogakure shinobi immediately converged, pressing their backs together in a tight, defensive perimeter.

Just as their hands came together to form the seals for a synchronized counter-barrage.

A faint, ominous buzzing sound vibrated through the damp air.

Immediately after.

An overwhelming, suffocating cloud of black insects surged from the underbrush, the canopy, and the very bark of the trees, swarming them from all directions.

"These are... the Kikaichū of the Aburame Clan!"

A Kumogakure ninja shrieked, his voice cracking in absolute terror.

Desperate, he attempted to mold his lightning chakra to fry the incoming swarm. But as he focused his energy, he realized his chakra network felt impossibly sluggish, like trying to push water through mud.

"When did..."

He looked down at his arms in horror.

Without him ever noticing, dozens of tiny, black beetles had already burrowed beneath his skin, their mandibles locked into his tenketsu, frantically gorging themselves on his chakra.

"Aaahhh!!"

Agonized screams erupted one after another as the Kikaichū swarmed over the Kumo shinobi. Under the relentless interference of the insect swarm, the flawless defensive formation instantly dissolved into a chaotic, flailing mess.

"Eight Trigrams Vacuum Palm!"

A concussive, invisible shockwave of highly compressed chakra blasted out from the dense mist.

A Kumogakure Chunin, who had just managed to break free from the swarm, took the full brunt of the strike. His chest cavity caved in with a horrific crunch of shattering ribs. He was launched backward like a broken ragdoll, a spray of blood trailing behind him as he smashed through the trees.

A Hyuga Clan ninja stepped out from the lingering fog, his pale eyes locked onto the survivors, his hands poised in the flawless, deadly stance of the Gentle Fist.

The Uchiha blocked the front.

The Hyuga sealed the rear.

And the Aburame's Kikaichū devoured everything in between.

Motoi gritted his teeth so hard he tasted copper. Cold sweat poured down his forehead, stinging his eyes.

He looked at the inescapable net closing in around him. He knew, with absolute certainty, that he would likely meet his end in this forest today.

"Since I can't escape..."

"...Then I'll take one of you with me!"

A terrifying resolve ignited in Motoi's eyes.

The lightning chakra within his body suddenly erupted, violently surging outward in a blinding, crackling aura of desperate, suicidal power.
