Chapter 20 - Chapter 20: Her Choice

The air felt heavy.

Like even breathing was a decision.

Lena stood frozen.

Between them.

Daniel on one side.

Jason on the other.

Two different worlds.

Two different truths.

And now—

She had to choose.

Silence

No one spoke.

No one moved.

Even the night felt still.

Waiting.

Jason Breaks It

"Well?" Jason said calmly.

A pause.

"Take your time."

His eyes stayed on Lena.

Watching.

Measuring.

Daniel Steps Forward

"Don't," Daniel said.

His voice low.

Controlled.

But there was something else beneath it.

Urgency.

"Don't listen to him."

Lena looked at him.

And for a moment—

Everything else faded.

All the chaos.

All the fear.

Gone.

"…Then tell me the truth," she said.

That stopped him.

Just for a second.

The Question

"What is all of this, Daniel?" she asked.

Her voice shook slightly.

"But her eyes…"

Focused.

"Not pieces. Not guesses."

A pause.

"The truth."

Daniel's Silence

He didn't answer.

Not immediately.

Because the truth…

Wasn't simple.

And once he said it—

There was no going back.

Jason Smiles

"See?" Jason said softly.

"She's already asking the right questions."

Daniel's jaw tightened.

"Stay out of this."

Jason chuckled.

"I've never been out of it."

Lena Steps Back

Her heart pounded.

"Daniel…" she said quietly.

"If I stay with you…"

A pause.

"…what am I stepping into?"

Silence.

Daniel looked at her.

Really looked at her.

And this time—

He didn't hide it.

"War."

The word landed heavy.

Real.

Unavoidable.

The Other Side

Lena slowly turned to Jason.

"And if I go with you?"

Jason's expression remained calm.

"Answers."

A pause.

"The truth about him."

He glanced at Daniel.

"About everything."

The Choice

Her heart pounded harder.

War…

Or truth.

Danger…

Or answers.

But then—

Something clicked.

A memory.

Daniel's voice.

"Protect her."

Lena's Decision

She exhaled slowly.

Then—

She moved.

Step by step.

Not toward Jason.

Toward Daniel.

She stopped beside him.

Close.

Steady.

"I choose him."

Silence.

Heavy.

Final.

Jason's Reaction

For a moment—

He didn't react.

Didn't speak.

Didn't move.

Then—

He smiled.

Not surprised.

Not disappointed.

Almost…

Satisfied.

"Good."

Lena frowned slightly.

"…Good?"

Jason nodded.

"Yes."

A pause.

"That's exactly what I expected."

The Twist Begins

Daniel's eyes narrowed.

"…What are you planning?"

Jason ignored him.

Instead—

He looked at Lena.

Closely.

Carefully.

Like he was studying something.

Then—

He said something that changed everything.

"You really don't remember, do you?"

Lena froze.

"…Remember what?"

Jason's voice softened slightly.

"Your role in all of this."

Her heart skipped.

"No… I—"

She stopped.

Because suddenly—

Her head hurt.

Sharp.

Sudden.

Memories.

Flashes.

A room.

White walls.

Voices.

Daniel's name.

Her breath quickened.

"…What… is this…?"

Daniel turned to her instantly.

"Lena?"

The Reveal

Jason stepped closer.

Calm.

Controlled.

"You weren't just a 'variable,'" he said quietly.

A pause.

"You were part of the experiment."

Silence.

Everything stopped.

Lena's eyes widened.

"…No…"

Daniel's expression darkened instantly.

"What did you do to her?"

Jason didn't answer immediately.

Then—

"We didn't do anything."

A pause.

"We activated what was already there."

Lena Breaks

Her breathing became uneven.

"I… don't understand…"

More flashes.

More fragments.

Training.

Observing.

Watching Daniel.

Her hands trembled.

"…I was… there…"

Daniel's heart dropped.

"…What?"

Final Moment

Jason stepped back slowly.

His goal complete.

"For now," he said.

A pause.

"Let's see what she becomes."

And then—

He turned.

Walking back toward the car.

The men followed.

The car door closed.

And just like that—

He was gone.

Aftermath

Silence.

Heavy.

Unstable.

Lena stood there.

Shaking.

Confused.

Broken between two truths.

Daniel stepped closer.

Carefully.

"Lena…"

She looked at him.

But her eyes…

Were different.

Uncertain.

Afraid.

"…What if he's right?" she whispered.

The question hit harder than anything else.

Because for the first time—

Daniel didn't have an answer.

What if Lena was never just a normal girl...?
