Chapter 156 - Mixed Signal 3

"I'm really sorry for missing our meeting," Vessara continued, her voice desperate now. "I couldn't leave the hospital."

"You had your phone, Vessara." He stopped, turned to face her.

She froze. "I know." Her voice came out small. "I left it in the car. I was so focused on Thea that I didn't even think to grab it. I didn't—" She sighed, the sound shuddering out of her. "I didn't mean to worry you."

Vael walked toward her. Slowly. When he reached her, he didn't stop. His hand found hers, his fingers warm against her cold skin, and he tugged her gently toward the dining area.

He pulled out a chair and gestured for her to sit.

She did.

"I'm really—"

"That's enough."

She went quiet.

Vael moved toward the tabletop. "You're here," he said over his shoulder. "That's enough."

The kettle clicked on. Vessara watched him move through the space with practiced ease, pulling down a cup and reaching for a teabag. His movements were fluid and unhurried.
