The shrill beeping of Vael's phone dragged him out of a sleep so deep it felt like he had only just closed his eyes. He frowned without opening them, instinctively choosing to ignore it. Whoever was calling could wait.
But the phone continued ringing. A low curse formed in his throat. He shifted to reach for it, only to realize why he couldn't move properly. A warm weight rested across his chest, and soft hair brushed against his skin every time he breathed.
Vessara.
She was still asleep. The annoyance that had threatened to surface over the sound eased for a brief moment.
Her cheek was pressed against him, one arm draped over his stomach, and she was completely unaware that the world had apparently decided to intrude on the first peaceful sleep he'd had in weeks.
The phone rang again. Vael let out a low groan. Carefully, he slid a hand beneath her shoulder and eased her onto the pillow beside him. She made a small sound of protest but didn't open her eyes.
