Chapter 15 - The First Spark

Cold wind swept through the open doorway.

Snow drifted quietly across the ground outside, settling over the village in a thin white layer. The sky had turned dark, and the lanterns along the street flickered weakly in the growing night.

The hooded stranger stood motionless.

Silent.

Watching.

Inside the small house, the knight's body tensed immediately.

His hand rested firmly on the hilt of his sword.

His instincts screamed danger.

"Who are you?" he demanded.

His voice was calm, but sharp.

Ready.

The stranger did not answer right away.

Instead, he slowly lifted his head.

The hood shifted slightly, revealing part of his face.

Pale skin.

Sharp features.

Cold eyes.

"I am a traveler," the man replied.

His voice was smooth.

Controlled.

Almost too calm.

The knight did not relax.

"Travelers do not ask for children by name," he said.

Silence followed.

Snow continued to fall.

Soft.

Steady.

Unsettling.

Behind the knight, Arin stood quietly near the bed.

Listening.

Watching.

Observing everything.

The stranger's gaze shifted past the knight.

And locked directly onto the boy.

For a brief moment—

The world felt still.

Then the stranger spoke again.

"I have been searching for you," he said.

The knight's grip tightened on his sword.

A dangerous realization formed in his mind.

"Leave," he ordered.

His voice low.

Threatening.

The stranger smiled faintly.

A small, confident smile.

"I am afraid I cannot do that."

The air grew heavier.

Tension filled the room.

The knight stepped forward, placing himself fully between the stranger and the child.

"You will not take him," he said.

The stranger's eyes narrowed slightly.

Not angry.

Not frustrated.

Simply calculating.

"Take him?" he repeated softly.

"No."

He paused.

Then spoke again.

"I am here to confirm something."

The knight's heartbeat quickened.

"Confirm what?" he asked.

The stranger's gaze returned to Arin.

Cold.

Unblinking.

"Whether the rumors are true," he answered.

Silence fell.

Heavy.

Dangerous.

Arin felt something strange.

A sudden pressure in the air.

Subtle.

Unfamiliar.

But real.

His chest tightened.

His breathing slowed.

His body felt warm.

Too warm.

The stranger stepped forward.

One slow step.

The knight drew his sword instantly.

Steel flashed in the lantern light.

"Do not move," he warned.

The stranger stopped.

But his smile remained.

"Very well," he said calmly.

"If you insist."

Then—

Without warning—

The stranger raised his hand.

A faint blue glow appeared around his palm.

Mana.

Strong.

Controlled.

Dangerous.

The knight's eyes widened.

This was not an ordinary traveler.

This was a trained mage.

The air around the stranger began to vibrate.

Energy gathered quickly.

The temperature in the room dropped.

The lantern flame flickered violently.

Arin's heart began to pound.

Faster.

Stronger.

Louder.

Something inside him reacted.

Awakened.

Responded.

Heat spread through his chest.

Then into his arms.

Then into his hands.

The stranger noticed immediately.

His eyes sharpened with interest.

"There it is," he whispered.

The knight lunged forward.

Sword raised.

Determined to stop him.

But the stranger moved faster.

With a quick flick of his wrist—

A burst of energy shot forward.

The knight was thrown backward across the room.

CRASH.

His body slammed into the wooden wall.

The air rushed from his lungs.

Arin's eyes widened in shock.

Fear surged through him.

The stranger stepped closer.

Slow.

Confident.

Certain of victory.

"Do not be afraid," he said calmly.

"I will not harm you."

But his eyes told a different story.

Cold.

Hungry.

Dangerous.

Arin's breathing became uneven.

His heart raced wildly.

Fear filled every part of his body.

And then—

It happened.

A sudden pulse of energy burst from his chest.

Bright.

Warm.

Powerful.

The lantern flame exploded.

The windows rattled violently.

The floor trembled beneath his feet.

The stranger froze.

Shock flashed across his face.

The glow around Arin's hands brightened.

Not blue.

Not gold.

Something different.

Something unknown.

For the first time—

The stranger stepped back.

"Incredible," he whispered.

The energy faded slowly.

The room fell silent again.

Arin staggered slightly.

Weak.

Confused.

Breathing hard.

The knight pushed himself up from the floor.

Pain filled his body.

But relief filled his heart.

He rushed forward instantly.

Grabbing the boy.

Protecting him.

"Stay behind me," he said firmly.

The stranger studied them both carefully.

His expression calm once more.

But his eyes burned with curiosity.

"This changes everything," he said quietly.

He stepped backward toward the door.

Slowly.

Carefully.

Snow continued to fall outside.

Silent.

Endless.

The stranger paused at the doorway.

Then spoke one final time.

"I will return," he said.

His voice carried certainty.

Promise.

Threat.

Then he disappeared into the night.

Silence filled the small house.

Heavy.

Uncertain.

The knight looked down at Arin.

His voice filled with awe.

And fear.

"You are not powerless," he whispered.

Arin stared at his own hands.

Still warm.

Still trembling.

For the first time in his life—

Something inside him had answered.

And deep within his mind—

The ancient voice spoke again.

Quiet.

Awakening.

Certain.

"Ability detected."
